One-Day Detox Diet {What to eat after a day of not so great eating}

Posted September 5, 2014 in detox, healthy eating, health, getting back on track, food, healthy food, eat

Although I do eat healthy most of the time, I occasionally have a day that's not so fab.

I usually follow the 80/20 rule - 80% of what I eat is whole foods and 20% is things I love to indulge in like dark chocolate, champagne, wine, ice cream, etc.

But there is (very) occasionally a whole day or most of a day that is full of crap. This week, I had one of those days.

I felt hungry all day and was craving crap. I didn't take the time to investigate my cravings (your cravings mean something!) and just ate what I craved (chips, ice cream, cheese). I later realized that it was all hormonal.

One thing that I always do after a day of eating junk - get right back on track! It's too easy to let one day of indulging turn into two and those two days turn into a week and that week turns into a month.

Getting right back to healthy eating will get rid of that bloat from overeating and eating high sodium foods, and you will feel so much better!

Don't worry, a detox day doesn't mean drinking green juice all day. I'm a fan of eating and believe you can detox your system with nourishing foods. Detox your body by drinking lots of water, getting some physical activity and filling up on tons of produce. Stay away from inflammatory foods like refined sugar, red meat, processed foods, dairy products and refined grains.

Here's what I ate to detox from a not so fab day of eating...

Apple cider vinegar drink (water and ACV or add a bit of organic apple juice, cinnamon and cayenne) + a green smoothie (unsweetened almond milk, kale, 1/2 frozen banana, 1/4 cup blueberries, 1 tsp. aloe vera juice, 1/2 tsp. spirulina and 1/4 avocado)

Raw almonds + 1 cup watermelon

1/2 spring roll + Rama Tofu with brown rice (I had a lunch meeting at a Thai restaurant and decided to try something new! I liked the combo of tofu and peanut sauce, but I didn't love the peanut sauce over steamed spinach and broccoli. I would have liked the sauce over peppers and onions better.)

1/2 bottle Kombucha + Double Chocolate Raspberry Smoothie - I felt like I needed a bit of energy before my workout, so I sipped on this smoothie before doing Piloxing in my living room.

Rainbow Raw Pad Thai - When you're detoxing your system, it's good to eat raw vegetables. Raw food contains enzymes that act as a catalyst for detoxification (from Institute for Integrative Nutrition).

Raspberries with dark chocolate chips and roasted coconut chips - I love dessert, and this satisfied my sweet tooth and contains tons of nutrients!

Organic tea

*Keep in mind that this is something that works for me. This was enough food to keep me feeling energized and satisfied. Listen to your body and nourish yourself based on what your body is telling you.
