My First Hot Yoga Class!

I've always wanted to take a hot yoga class. But I live in a small town in the middle of Nebraska, and hot yoga isn't that easy to come by.

But Laura at Ryan's Root to Rise Yoga and Anew, a new holistic center, teamed up to offer a hot yoga class!

The class was at 5:45 a.m. the day before Thanksgiving.

There were about 20 people packed into the small space at Anew. We were set up mat to mat! When I went down in Chatarunga, my face hovering was over the feet of the girl in front of me. It was packed, but it actually wasn't that big of deal. I was still able to get my yoga on.

It was also hot! I started sweating as soon I walked into the room. Just a few minutes into class, sweat was dripping down my neck. About 15 minutes into class sweat was dripping off my face onto the mat.

I took a small towel with me to wipe the sweat off my body, and I'm glad I had it! I definitely think a yoga mat towel would have been great to have. My mat started to get slippery because so much sweat was dripping off of me.

I loved the warmness though. It helped my muscles loosen up quickly. It usually takes awhile for me to be able to get deeper into poses because my muscles need time to get warm. But the warm room helped me get right into deep poses.

We did, however, do a pretty advanced pose that wasn't working for me - bird of paradise. I was stumbling all over the place trying to stand up, and I was nervous I would fall into someone. I actually tried this pose again when I got home, and I got right into it with a bent knee. I guess I was just too nervous about knocking people over in class.

The heat is actually supposed to help you reach new levels of flexibility. Laura said she can only do bird of paradise when she's in a hot room.

Hot yoga can also be more of a cardio workout than a regular yoga class. Laura said your heart will work as hard in hot yoga as it would during a run.

I recommend drinking lots of water!! Since I went to an early morning class, I was worried about not being hydrated enough. I drank about 10 ounces of water before I got to class. I drank about 10 more ounces during the class, and drank 40 ounces of water over a few hours after class. This worked totally fine for me. I never felt sick, headachey or tired. I actually felt pretty energized after class.

Overall, I loved the class and will definitely go again!
