A Healthy Holiday Cocktail Party

Happy Holidays!

I absolutely love this time of year. Spending extra time with friends and family, shopping for the perfect gifts, sending Christmas cards, decorating the house, wrapping gifts, baking holiday cookies, watching Christmas movies. I love every single thing.

I also love throwing parties, which is why I decided to plan a healthy holiday cocktail party!

A few months ago, I started throwing healthy dinner parties. I invited women that I didn't know particularly well, but I knew they were interested in health and fitness. Each guest brought healthy dishes to the parties, and we just chatted about working out, eating healthy, running, etc.

I wanted December's party to be extra special, so I asked local businesses to donate items that would help my guests have the healthiest holiday season possible. Everyone that I asked was so generous! All of my guests went home with amazing goodie bags, and we even had some giveaways!

But before I talk about the gifts and prizes, I want to talk about the food! Everyone brought incredibly delicious dishes.

There was loaded potatoes stuffed with broccoli and topped with guacamole and chives. We had turkey bacon wrapped asparagusbutternut squash and goat cheese tartlets and a vegetable tray with garlicky white bean artichoke dip.

I made my pesto caesar kale salad with cranberries and almonds, but I think I added too much garlic to the caesar dressing. Oops.

For dessert, we had a pumpkin trifle, peppermint frappaccino cupcakessugar-free cinnamon roasted almonds and fruit salsa with cinnamon pita chips.

I also served a cranberry champagne cocktail.

I bought all the dinnerware from Celebrate Express. They have super cute holiday plates, napkins and other dinnerware items.

We spent the evening eating, chatting and getting to know one another. It was so much fun! My goal with this party was to create a community of women who are interested in living healthy lifestyles. My hope is that we will get together regularly and share information, support one another and motivate one another. I truly believe that living a healthy lifestyle can't be done alone. Having cheerleaders makes the process so much easier!

OK, so on to the goodies. I still can't believe how generous all of the local businesses were! Thank you so much to everyone who donated!

Here's what my guests went home with…

A custom-made canvas tote bag from 24 Hour Tees. I couldn't believe how awesome these totes turned out! They are so perfect for taking to the gym or for going shopping. I went to high school with the owners, Shawna and Chais, and I was beyond grateful that they designed and printed these tote bags for the party.

24 hour tees makes super quick, affordable custom tees, koozies and totes for businesses, organizations or events, and they can even complete rush orders within 24 Hours. I told them what I wanted the totes to say, and they created the design!

You can stop by 24 Hour Tees at 110 W. 24th St., give them a call at 308-224-6068 or email them at Kearney@24HrTees.net. Also check out their Facebook page.

A coupon for a free coffee from Chapman Swifts Coffee House. I asked Chapman Swifts to gift my guests with coffee because I know coffee helps me get through the holidays! Located at 2400 Central Ave., Chapman Swifts serves fresh coffee, espresso drinks, chai teas, smoothies and home baked food products. Owner Katie Moore spent the last nine years working as a primatologist in Portland, OR. and just moved to Kearney (her husband's hometown) to be closer to family.

The coffee shop prides itself on being downtown, which is a very walkable and bike-friendly part of town. They have a drive-thru/walk-up window and indoor and outdoor space for sitting and sipping your coffee. They also sell premium coffee products. "Each roast has its own subtle flavors that make it special. We think it stands on its own quite well, and you get the health benefits of coffee without all the calories and sugar."

Juice Plus+ Orchard + Garden Blends Chewables from Crystal Randles. I was so excited that Crystal donated Juice Plus+. It's something I've been interested in, so I was thrilled to learn more about the products. Here's what Crystal had to say about Juice Plus+. Juice Plus+ is a whole food product that gives you 25 different vine ripened fruits and vegetables in a capsule or chewable gummy. Surf Sweets Organic Fruity Bears, Enjoy Life Not Nuts Seeds and Fruit and Crunchmaster Gluten-free Multi-Seed Crackers from the Kearney HyVee. Sweet Success has been partnering with HyVee for quite a few months now, so they were excited to share some healthy snacks to help my guests get through the holidays. Kaiti George is the dietician at my local HyVee, and she offers services such as health screenings, shopping tours, community presentations, cooking classes, wellness workshops, kids's events and weight loss programs. Contact her here for more information.

Young Living Essential Oils samples from Rutheah Rodehorst. Rutheah donated essential oil samples to everyone! I was excited because I haven't used essential oils much, and I've been wanting to learn more. Young Living is one of the leading companies in essential oils and wellness solutions. According to Rutheah's website, "Using the highest quality therapeutic-grade essential oils and leading-edge technology, Young Living has developed a new line of products designed to help people of every age live healthier and happier lives. Our state-of-the-art laboratory and cutting-edge production facility ensure that every Young Living product consistently leads the industry in purity, quality, and effectiveness."

Homemade lip balm from me. Sometimes I get on little DIY kicks. I really want to start making my own lotions, body scrubs and other beauty products. I started with lip balm. I used this recipe, which was super easy and requires just a few ingredients - beeswax, coconut oil, honey, vitamin E and peppermint oil. I love these because you know exactly what ingredients you are putting on your lips!

And the fun giveaways were…

Two Young Living USB Diffusers for essential oils from Rutheah. Rutheah was kind enough to gift me with a USB diffuser and I've been using it in my office. It's amazing! I've been using lavender to help me feel more calm and relaxed during the work day. She also gifted two of the party guests with USB diffusers! Shop for these and more essential oils and diffusers here.

A Juice Plus+ gift basket from Crystal. Crystal gifted one lucky lady with a basket that included Juice Plus+ Complete in Dutch Chocolate, a blender bottle and a Juice Plus+ Complete bar. To shop for these Juice Plus+ products and more, go to Crystal's website here.

A free hot yoga class from Laura at Ryan's Root to Rise Yoga. Laura teaches hot power yoga, hot detox yoga and hot kundalini yoga at Anew and at her new hot yoga studio, Ryan's Root to Rise Yoga, which is located at 2400 Central Ave. (It's in the same location as Chapman Swifts, so you can do yoga then get coffee! Fun date with your girlfriends!).

I've taken a few of Laura's hot yoga classes, and I love them. Hot yoga allows you to get into deeper poses because the heat really loosens up your muscles. You also sweat buckets, which just feels really good. Sign up for her classes here.

A free health coaching consultation and session from Sweet Success Health Coaching (me). As I've mentioned, I'm starting a health coaching business! I've been studying through the Institute for Integrative Nutrition, and I will start taking clients next month! If you're interested in finding out more about health coaching, email me at sarasweetsuccess@gmail.com. I'd be happy to meet with you for a free consultation! Also, that mug wearing a sweater! I'm thinking I need one of those!

Thank you to all of the guests who came to the party and brought delicious food! And a huge thanks to all the local businesses who donated items to make everyone's holiday healthier!

Have a happy and healthy Christmas!
