Post-Workout Chocolate Smoothie

I've been pretty obsessed with turmeric lately. I've mostly been putting it in my morning immunity boosting concoction - orange juice, ginger, turmeric, cinnamon and honey (I'm getting ready to travel so I'm getting myself as healthy as possible!).

But after a run recently, I had a random idea to throw some turmeric in my chocolate smoothie. Sounds weird, I know. Especially since turmeric is a savory spice used in curry. But turmeric contains more than two dozen anti-inflammatory compounds (source), so I thought it would be the perfect smoothie add-in after a workout. Because inflammation occurs in muscles after workouts, I try to eat anti-inflammatory foods to prevent soreness.

I also think turmeric is a magical healing spice. Seriously!

WebMD says, "Turmeric is used for arthritis, heartburn (dyspepsia), stomach pain, diarrhea, intestinal gas, stomachbloating, loss of appetite, jaundice, liver problems and gallbladder disorders. It is also used for headaches, bronchitis, colds, lung infections, fibromyalgia, leprosy, fever, menstrual problems, and cancer. Other uses include depression, Alzheimer’s disease, water retention, worms, and kidney problems. Some people apply turmeric to the skin for pain, ringworm, bruising, leech bites, eyeinfections, inflammatory skin conditions, soreness inside of the mouth, and infected wounds."

I mean, it can pretty much do it all.

My chocolate smoothie turned out perfectly chocolately and sweet. I used banana and dates to sweeten it, and to replenish the carbs lost during my run. I used my favorite chocolate plant protein powder and added cocoa powder to make it chocolatey. I also threw in some cinnamon, which also has anti-inflammatory properties.

Post-Workout Chocolate Smoothie

1 cup almond milk

1/2 banana

1 scoop chocolate plant protein powder

1-2 tbsp. unsweetened cocoa powder

4 dates

1 tbsp. chia seeds

1 tsp. turmeric

1 tsp. cinnamon

4-5 ice cubes

Place in your blender and blend until combined.
