One thing that I have realized about myself is that my day is better when it begins peacefully. When my mornings are rushed, hectic and stressful, I feel that way all day long. But when my morning is relaxed, quiet and slow moving, my day is less stressful.

I decided that I wanted this year to be all about peacefulness and joy (read more about that here), so I've implemented a new morning routine.

I tested it out during my holiday break from work, and I've continued my routine now that I'm back to work. I've been feeling less stressed as I begin my day. I truly believe that how you start your day sets the tone for the rest of your day!

Here's how I start my day and how you can create your own healthy morning routine...

Meditation - This is the first thing I do after I wake up. Lately, I've been setting the timer on my phone for 5 minutes and sitting in silence. But sometimes I use meditations from the Chopra Center, BexLife and Grace Space. I usually do a 5-10 minute guided meditation. This prevents me from beginning my day with a stream of thoughts about what I need to get done, which stresses me out. It also allows me to set an intention for the day. You can get a free trial of Grace Space here -->> bit.ly/happysara

Oil Pulling - I keep a jar of coconut oil in my bathroom. I scoop out about 1/2 tablespoon and I swish it around in my mouth for about 20 minutes. I typically multi-task while I do this. I Dry Brush then I hop in the shower. When I'm out of the shower, I spit the oil in the trash can and rinse my mouth with some water. Oil pulling is an ancient Ayurvedic technique that draws out toxins in your body. Dry brushing helps stimulate the lymphatic system, which helps the body detoxify naturally.

Warm Lemon Water - I actually have a sensitivity to citrus fruit, so I've never been able to drink lemon water. But I recently realized that I can use lemon essential oil in water without having a reaction. Drinking warm water in the morning can help digestion and the lemon can help stimulate your gastrointestinal tract. I usually drink my lemon water while I'm doing my make up.

Apple Cider Vinegar - I drink an apple cider vinegar drink every morning. I usually combine 1/2 cup of organic apple juice, 2 tbsp. raw organic apple cider vinegar, cinnamon, turmeric, cayenne pepper and water. But sometimes I just add apple cider vinegar to cranberry juice, pomegranate juice or green juice. Apple cider vinegar has tons of health benefits such as balancing pH levels in the body, helping with allergies and reducing heartburn. It is said to give you a natural boost of energy. I drink my apple cider vinegar drink while I eat breakfast.

Get a Dose of Inspiration - While I put on my make up and do my hair, I listen to an inspiring book on Audible. Right now, I'm listening to My Life on the Road by Gloria Steinem.

A Healthy Breakfast - Breakfast is my favorite meal of the day. I just love all breakfast foods. On weekdays, I usually have oatmeal, a veggie omelet, protein pancakes or whole wheat toast topped with peanut butter and banana slices. Having a healthy combination of protein, healthy carbohydrates and fats keeps me energized and satisfied. Lately I've been obsessed with adding a little goat cheese to my omelets. So amazing!

Here are more of my favorite breakfast recipes...

I Take My Supplements - With my breakfast, I always take my supplements - Multivitamin, Probiotic, Fish Oil and Calcium-Magnesium. I occasionally take a charcoal if I am in need of a little detoxing.

Because I workout at 5:30 a.m. on some mornings, I do this routine after I return from the gym. On those days, I typically wake up at 5:10 a.m., brush my teeth, throw on my workout clothes and leave the house by 5:20 a.m. before I even realize I'm awake. I still like doing my routine after I return from the gym.

Creating healthy routines is one of many ways I help my clients create healthier and happier lives.

I practice a holistic approach to health and wellness, which means that I look at how all areas of your life are connected. Does stress at your job or in your relationship cause you to overeat? Does lack of sleep or low energy prevent you from exercising? As we work together, we will look at how all parts of your life affect your health as a whole.

My approach is not to dwell on calories, carbs, fats, and proteins. It is not to create lists of restrictions or good and bad foods. Instead, I work with my clients to create a happy, healthy life in a way that is flexible, fun and rewarding.

Together we’ll work to reach your health goals in areas such as achieving optimal weight, reducing food cravings, increasing sleep, and maximizing energy. As we work together, you’ll develop a deeper understanding of the food and lifestyle choices that work best for you and implement lasting changes that will improve your energy, balance and health.
