What it's like to work with a health coach

It's Health Coach Week! The goal of Health Coach Week, which is January 11-17, is to increase the visibility of health coaches and to celebrate the positive change they make in families, communities and the world.

To celebrate, I thought I would share a behind the scenes look at what it's like to work with a health coach.

After years of reading hundreds of health magazines, online articles, books and blogs, trying diet after diet, and gaining and losing weight over and over again, I finally broke my cycle of yo yo dieting and emotional eating. Although I eventually learned to love my body, gained self-confidence and lost weight, I knew there had to be a better way to get there.

When I learned about the Institute for Integrative Nutrition, I had never heard of health coaching. But I was intrigued. After doing some research, I knew I had to enroll. I wanted to be able to support people as they worked toward their goals, and give them the guidance that I needed during my weight loss journey. I graduated from the Institute for Integrative Nutrition last July!!

And now I'm a health coach!

A health coach is a guide and mentor who empowers you and provides ongoing support and guidance as you set goals and make sustainable changes to improve your health and happiness.

I practice a holistic approach to health and wellness, which means I look at how all areas of your life are connected. Does stress at your job or in your relationship cause you to overeat? Does lack of sleep or low energy prevent you from exercising?

I don't dwell on calories, carbs, fats and proteins. I don't create a list of restrictions or good and bad foods. I help you create a healthy, happy life in a way that is flexible, fun and rewarding.

So what is a session with a health coach like? Here's a look...

- New and Good. I want to know what's been going well. What are you excited about? What is bringing you joy?

- What goals or tasks did you accomplish? My clients meet with me every two weeks. In between sessions, they work on specific action steps or tasks to help them reach their overall goal. We catch up on how taking action went.

- Your time! - As a client, you get to take the lead on the conversation topics based on what goals you want to accomplish, what you've been struggling with and what you want to learn. These topics can range from stress, sleeping, self-care, food habits, cooking, eating organic, whole grains, protein, exercise, relationships, career and spirituality.

- Action Steps. - Now that you've identified an area that you want to change, I offer recommendations to help you make that change. You are accountable for executing your action steps. This is how you will reach your ultimate goal!

- Support. - To provide support and guidance, I provide you with informational handouts or worksheets, documentary recommendations, books, recipes and more.

To decide if health coaching is right for you, I invite you to schedule a free initial consultation with me by emailing sarasweetsuccess@gmail.com During this session, we will discuss your health and lifestyle to determine how I can best support you in achieving your goals.
