Weekend Recap {April 8-10, 2016}

After weeks of feeling overwhelmed by my to do list, I was super excited for a weekend away!

The BF and I spent the weekend in Omaha to spend time with his family, eat delicious food, relax and shop. It was exactly what I needed!

Friday, April 11


I took the day off of work so that I could do my long run before heading out of town and to go to Hastings to visit the BF's family. I started the day with a 9 mile run that felt a million times better than my attempted 11-miler last weekend.

My recovery smoothie was almond milk, spinach, 1/2 banana, vegan vanilla protein and greens powder.


The BF's sister and nephews were visiting from Washington, so we were super excited to spend time with them. The BF took the boys fishing, which was entertaining. 

The BF's dad and stepmom treated us to pizza from Papa Ray's for dinner --> my first time veering from Sugar Free April. I've also been following my 28-Day Transformation, and decided to be less strict about it over the weekend since we were out of town (and my long run was done for the week).

Saturday, April 12

We got up early to head to Omaha. I ate toasted sprouted grain bread topped with almond butter and banana slices in the car.


We met the BF's sister and nephews at the Henry Doorly Zoo, and we headed straight to the elephants. The zoo just rescued some African elephants that were malnourished because of the drought in Swaziland.


For lunch, the BF's stepmom packed us a cooler full of food so we didn't have to eat in the park. We had turkey wraps, grapes, strawberries, Veggie Straws and more. Then we headed back into the park for more fun.


My favorite part of the zoo is the aquarium. I love the penguins, jelly fish and sharks. I think they are so fascinating. 


We left the zoo after about five hours of fun. We said goodbye to the fam, and checked into our hotel. We stayed at the Courtyard Marriott in Aksarben Village. We usually stay in Midtown, so I thought I would change things up.


The BF and I grabbed drinks at The Homey Inn, the most amazing dive bar. 


They have champagne on tap!


Then we grabbed dinner at Mai Thai in Aksarben Village. I've always wanted to try this Lucky Buddha beer because the bottle is super cute. The beer isn't good, but oh well.


I ordered pad Thai with tofu, and it was good. A little too sweet, but still good. Mai Thai was fine, but not outstanding. The atmosphere was casual, which was perfect after a long day at the zoo. But our server really sucked. He had no personality and rarely came to our table. 

We grabbed drinks at LIV Lounge. I had a Bueno, which had tequila, triple sec, muddled raspberries and lime juice. Yum! I'm going to make this drink the summer! 

Then I drank a ton of water because three drinks is over my limit.

Sunday, April 13

We slept in, which was much needed. Then we grabbed coffee at the hotel restaurant. They serve Starbucks, so I had an iced coffee. We decided to grab drive thru breakfast because we didn't want to get to our plans for the day. We ended up going to Starbucks and having spinach and feta egg wraps.

Then it was time for Nebraska Furniture Mart! O.M.G. This was my first time going there, and it was overwhelming. The BF and I need chairs for our living room, a headboard and some other small pieces of furniture. After almost two hours of searching, we left with nothing. But we have a better idea of what we're looking for.


We grabbed brunch at Kitchen Table. I had grilled levain topped with vanilla butter and house made preserves, a salted caramel streusel cinnamon pecan roll and a fried egg sandwich with sunchoke hummus and spinach on rosemary focaccia. I admit, going off Sugar Free April for this was worth it. Everything was so so delicious. 


Our next stop was the Old Market. While the BF explored Drastic Plastic and Homer's, I went to the Tea Smith and Lotus, this little hippie shop. 


I bought an iced lavender tea and some loose leaf ginger pu er tea at the Tea Smith, and a chakra candle at Lotus.


We shopped at Costco for health food - chia seeds, hemp seeds, coconut oil, almond butter, organic edamame spaghetti - household staples - coffee, pure maple syrup, pure vanilla extract - and a few other things.


We made a quick trip to Subaru so I could look at my dream car, the Crosstrek. I have a plan of action to buy this car this year!!

Our last stop in Omaha was Nebraska Crossing. I bought some powder at BareMinerals, and that was all we bought. 

Then it was time to go home!
