Vegan Salted Caramel Smoothie

Back in July, I had the most amazing salted caramel milkshake while I was visiting Atlanta. Since that life-changing milkshake, I've been working to create a perfect healthified non-dairy smoothie version.

After many attempts, I finally created a version that tastes decadent and delicious!

And this might be my favorite smoothie that I've ever made! It is so so good.

In my first few attempts to create the perfect caramel flavor, I blended dates in the smoothie. But there were always chunks of dates and it never tasted caramely enough. 

So I decided to make a caramel sauce out of dates first, then add that to the smoothie. Win! I've actually made this date sauce before. When I made it, I used less water and it was more like a dip for apples. This version is more like a caramel sauce you would drizzle over ice cream. Mmmmmm!

I also used my favorite vanilla plant protein powder to give the smoothie a hint of vanilla flavor. The protein that I use isn't gritty, and makes smoothies perfectly creamy. So it really adds a lot to this smoothie.

Salted Caramel Smoothie

Salted Caramel Sauce

1 cup dates, pitted

1 cup water

1 tsp. pure vanilla extract

1 tsp. sea salt

Combine all ingredients in a blender. Blend for up to five minutes or until the mixture becomes creamy and spoonable.

Salted Caramel Smoothie

1 cup cashew milk

2 tbsp. salted caramel sauce

1 banana, frozen

1 scoop vanilla plant protein powder

1/2 to 1 tsp. sea salt 

Combine all ingredients in a blender. Drizzle more caramel sauce on top of smoothie. Enjoy!
