Blue Apron Review

Posted October 14, 2016 in Blue Apron, healthy eating, home cooking, healthy lifestyle, healthy recipes, dairy-free cooking, dairy-free

I've been curious about Blue Apron and other healthy recipe delivery services for awhile. When I realized the BF and I had been eating out a lot on the weekends, I decided to try one out.

I knew it would help us stay in and cook, give us new inspiration in the kitchen, be healthy and allow us to save on food spending on weekends.

What is Blue Apron?

The mission of Blue Apron is to make home cooking accessible to everyone. In each delivery, you receive ingredients to make three meals.

Before you receive your order, you can choose the three meals you want out of six options or you can be surprised. You can also customize the types of meals you'd like to receive. I opted to receive meals that don't have red meat or pork. So we receive a combination of vegetarian, seafood and chicken options.

The only bummer is that you can't ask for dairy-free meals. Luckily, the meals we've received have been very easy to modify.  For example, when I made Brown Butter and Thyme Gnocchi, I cooked two different versions for the BF and I. In one pan, I browned the butter and added half the ingredients. In another pan, I used olive oil.

Business Practices

Besides offering a convenient way to cook new meals, I love the business practices of Blue Apron. They're committed to sustainable food practices like using sustainable fish, using food from farmers who use regenerative farming practices and reducing food waste. All the ingredients are pre-portioned, so there's no food that goes to waste.

Blue Apron also uses animal products without added hormones or antibiotics, high quality ingredients and ingredients from farms at peak freshness with minimal transit.

Also, all of the packaging is re-usable or recyclable.

The cost

Each delivery costs $59.94 (although I received my first delivery for free because I received an email with an offer). Because we use Blue Apron to cut down on eating out multiple times during the weekend, we're definitely saving money by using the meal delivery service.

You will receive an automatic delivery every week unless you skip the delivery. I've scheduled my meals to arrive once or twice a month depending on what we have going on during the weekends. You can also see the meal options five weeks ahead, so if a few meals sound delicious, you can schedule your delivery.

My Thoughts

We've received two Blue Apron deliveries and have another delivery on the way. We love it! All the meals we've received have been unique…meals I probably wouldn't make on my own. They're what I consider fancy meals, but most of them only take 30-40 minutes to prepare.

It's allowed us to try new foods like udon noodles or enjoy foods we don't eat often like gnocchi. We don't cook fish at home often, so it's taught us how to cook fish in a way that makes it flavorful. It allowed me to try new cooking methods like doing a quick pickle with cucumber.

The recipes are also very easy to follow with step-by-step instructions with photos. It's nice not to have to measure anything. You just chop and combine ingredients.

We'll definitely make some of the recipes again. One of my favorites was the Warm Brussels Sprout and Potato Salad.

First Blue Apron Delivery

We liked all the recipes in our first delivery. The salmon and gnocchi were our favorites. The eggplant pitas were good, but not our favorite. We will definitely make the gnocchi again, and I will start making salmon more often.

Crispy Salmon with Orzo, Green Been and Cucumber Salad

Brown Butter and Thyme Gnocchi with Maitake Mushrooms, Corn and Kale

Roasted Eggplant Pitas with Tomato, Cucumber and Farro Salad

Second Blue Apron Delivery

Another batch of delicious meals. I was obsessed with the Brussels sprout and potato salad. I will definitely cook chicken using the milanese recipe again. It was delicious. The udon noodles were great. The broth was so flavorful, and I loved the radishes and pickled cucumber. The avocado tempura tortas were amazing. Such a surprising flavor with the spicy roasted turnip in the sandwich.

Crispy Chicken Milanese with Warm Brussels Sprout and Potato Salad

Seared Cod and Udon Noodles with Shiitake Broth and Togarashi-Spiced Cucumber

Avocado Tempura Tortas with Spicy Turnip and Cabbage-Carrot Slaw

Third Blue Apron Delivery (which we haven't received yet)

Spicy Chicken and Carrots with Harissa, Dates and Chickpeas

Seared Salmon and Fall Vegetables with Apple-Brown Butter Vinaigrette

Baked Whole Wheat Rigatoni with Cone Cabbage and Sage

Have you tried a meal delivery service? What was your experience?

*This is not a sponsored post. I purchased Blue Apron on my own, and wanted to share my experience because I think it's a great way to support a healthy lifestyle.

If you'd like to receive your first delivery for free, leave your email in the comments or email it to me at I can give away five free deliveries as part of my Blue Apron subscription.
