My Top 4 Foods for Daily Detox

Adding detoxifying foods into your diet is super easy! These four detox foods can improve your digestion, reduce inflammation and provide your body with a lot of nourishment.

I've been on a journey to balance my hormones to eliminate hormonal headaches and migraines, improve my energy and lose some extra weight my body has been holding onto.

Working closely with my functional medicine doctor, I've made some dietary changes (eliminating dairy) and some lifestyle changes (getting off birth control and adding supplements to my daily routine). My hormonal migraines have been completely eliminated and my energy has increased so much.

I recently had my six-month appointment to go over my blood work results, and I learned that my estrogen levels are still high (which is causing some PMS symptoms) and my liver enzymes are high. So I've been increasing the amount of detoxifying foods in my diet to assist my liver in its cleansing process.

While I've added more detoxifying foods into my diet for a very specific reason, everyone can benefit from increasing the amount of cleansing foods in their daily diet.

Cleansing or detoxifying foods can improve your digestion, reduce inflammation and provide your body with a lot of nourishment while helping you crowd out foods that contain artificial ingredients, chemicals or added sugar.

Adding these foods into your diet every day can be super simple. Here are my favorite foods (and drinks) for daily detox…

Green Smoothies

The phytonutrients in greens improve the elimination process, which is considered to be the way that fiber lowers cholesterol.

I add a handful of spinach or kale to my green smoothies along with a high quality plant protein powder. You want to make sure your protein powder is made with minimal ingredients, without artificial sweeteners and with high quality ingredients.

The plant protein powder that I love is made with a blend of hemp, quinoa, pea, chia and pumpkin protein. It's also free of added sugar, artificial flavors, colors and preservatives, and it's gluten-free.

Organic Greens Powder

Again, the phytonutrients in greens are great for detoxification. I have a greens drink every day.

I like using a greens powder because it's super easy. You just add a scoop to water and blend it. The greens powder I use has a subtle berry flavor and doesn't taste grassy or earthy.

It's made with a blend of organic grasses and mushrooms, which provide a vegetarian source of iron and B vitamins, and is also a great source of phytonutrients and antioxidants.

Raw, Steamed or Roasted Cruciferous Vegetables

Cruciferous vegetables such as cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, bok choy, kale, Brussels sprouts and collard greens help support detoxification.

I like to add raw shaved Brussels sprouts and kale to salads. I also love roasted broccoli, cauliflower and Brussels sprouts in brown rice bowls with tofu or salmon. You can also make rice with cauliflower, which is great for healthy stir fry.

Dandelion Tea

Dandelion tea is full of vitamins A and C, and antioxidants, which help detoxify the liver and support the kidneys.

I love Traditional Medicinals tea because it's organic and really high quality. Dandelion tea can be a bit bitter, so you could add a teaspoon of honey to sweeten it up.
