How to Stay Healthy When You Work From Home

When you work at home it can be easy to spend an entire day in front of the computer. But making some simple shifts can make your workday much healthier and happier!

Once or twice a month, I take a vacation day from my full-time job to work at home on my business. It's usually when I feel like I need to catch up on administrative tasks or when I'm creating a new online group health coaching program.

This week, I took a day off to finish up writing copy for my new website and create a new free download for my website launch. So excited for this!

I absolutely love work-at-home days. I love the freedom of being able to throw on athletic shoes and go on a walk when I feel like I need to move or taking a break to put clean laundry away. 

I feel more productive, more positive and less overwhelmed by my to do list when I work at home. I also take better care of myself when I work from home. I listen to what my body needs, and because I'm at home, I can give my body (and mind) breaks when needed. 

And let's be real...I wear my pajamas all day. There is nothing better than that!

I also love that every time I work at home it's totally different. So I thought I would share a peek into my work day at home. 

Here's a look at my day:


I slept in until 8:30 a.m. This is much later than I usually sleep, but I didn't set an alarm and just let myself wake up whenever. I must have needed some extra sleep! I took my coffee outside to meditate, write down my daily gratitudes and write in my journal. 

I took some time to write out my priority tasks for the day. Then got to work. I ended up working outside until after 10 a.m.


Breakfast was scrambled eggs with turmeric, onions, kale and avocado. I also had a leftover zucchini pancake from the weekend. 


While I often work at my desk in my home office, sometimes I curl up on the couch under a blanket and work. No makeup, pajamas still on!


Around noon, I felt like I needed to get up and move around. So I went on a walk and listened to a podcast. 


At 1 p.m., I jumped on a Zoom meeting with my nutrition team. Every Monday, we have an accountability call to talk about our goals. I always feel so inspired after these calls!

I warmed up some leftovers for lunch, then got back to work. I occasionally took breaks to switch laundry and tidy up the house.

At 4 p.m., I met with a new health coaching client in person. I created a custom health coaching program to help her with some dietary changes. 

When I got home, I made dinner for the fiancé and I - turkey burgers, harissa roasted carrots and corn on the cob. 

At 7 p.m., I had a virtual health coaching session with a client who lives on the east coast. 

The fiancé and I went on a mile and a half walk (part of our evening routine to reconnect), and then I got ready for bed. 

It was a full day!


Some Tips for Staying Healthy When You Work at Home:

  • Create an inspiring workspace. Make sure your work environment isn't too cluttered and makes you feel inspired to work. I go back and forth between working outside and at my desk in my home office (and sometimes the couch). 
  • Work with your energy cycles. Notice when you feel the most energized and motivated, and do your most challenging tasks during those times. I feel the best in the morning, so that's when I write blog posts, create new programs or work on creative projects. 
  • Check in with yourself every hour. If you're like me, you can get going on a project and not even notice that hours have passed. Set an alarm on your phone at the top of every hour and just notice what you need - a glass of water, to get up and move, to move on to a new task, to shift your mindset by doing a meditation, etc. 
  • Make time for movement. It can be really easy to sit all day in front of the computer, but get up and move often. It will give you more energy and keep you in a good mood.
  • Avoid mindless snacking. If you find yourself mindlessly snacking while you work, check in with yourself to discover what your body really needs. Do you need a break? Do you need to get outside? Or are you truly hungry and in need of a meal? 
  • Eat nourishing foods that will keep you energized. Take breaks to prepare meals and snacks that are going to serve you in a positive way. When we eat nutrient-rich, whole foods, we function better on so many levels. Think of eating well as being a productivity booster!
