What’s more summery than getting together with friends and neighbors, grilling out and playing outdoor games?
Pretty much nothing. So celebrate summer by organizing a block party!
Buffalo County Community Partners is encouraging neighbors to organize healthy block parties this summer.
A kick-off event will take place from 3:30-5:30 p.m. Sunday, June 29 at Harmon Park, south of the activity building.
The event features free healthy snacks, D.I.Y. yard games, a bounce house, a bike blender, CrossFit Kids (taught by the amazing Sara Theesen), backyard hockey with the Tri-City Storm and a meet-and-greet with Buffalo County Community Partners board of directors and staff.
Those who complete enough of the activities will receive a Community Building Block Party Tool Kit, which includes resources for throwing a healthy party, D.I.Y yard games and activities, and the Healthful Potluck Favorites Recipe Book that I helped create last year!
This is going to be a fun event for the whole family! I’m bummed I won’t be there this year (I’ll be in Georgia!).

Here are some tips from Buffalo County Community Partners on throwing a healthy block party:
- Serve healthy food such as fruits and vegetables.
- Limit consumption of sugary beverages. Serve water!
- Provide activities and games for all ages.
- Discourage the use of electronic devices and promote community interaction.
- Prohibit alcoholic beverages.
- Encourage youth to attend and work to create mentoring relationships.
- Promote the idea of community gardens.
