Healthy Halloween Tips + a Spooky Workout Playlist

Happy Halloween!

I hope you have plans for a fun and memorable holiday. I absolutely love Halloween. I love coming up with a great costume idea, creating the costume and getting dressed up.

My absolute favorite costume I've worn as an adult is definitely my cupcake costume that I wore in 2011!

My dad helped me create my cupcake out of a circle laundry basket, poster board, quilt batting and sparkly card stock. We made suspenders that were attached to the inside using sheer white ribbon. I also made a cherry headband out of a styrofoam ball, red paint, a stick and a headband. It was a major project, but it turned out amazing! The BF dressed up as a baker. It was adorbs!

*Note: I couldn't sit down in this costume and going to the ladies room was nearly impossible. The entire cupcake had to be taken off. But it was totally worth it!

I went into the weekend feeling like I was getting a cold, and fully intended to get lots of rest. Well, that didn't really happen. I felt like I was on the go all weekend. And I'm, unfortunately, feeling worse today.

But it was a great weekend full of lots of family time, fun with friends and some Halloween treats!

Healthier Halloween Treats

I go back and forth on giving out junky candy to kids on Halloween.

It's a holiday, so indulging in a sugary treat is perfectly fine. But kids are going home with bags full of sugary treats and overindulging in sugar for days and days.

Sugar can cause a rapid rise of adrenaline levels in children, which is why you'll notice kids become hyperactive after having sugar. Sugar can also worsen the symptoms attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in children.

Overconsumption of sugar can also cause tooth decay and contribute to obesity.

So why not hand out something a bit healthier this Halloween? You may be the only one in your neighborhood handing out healthier alternatives to Halloween candy, but you may introduce those trick-or-treaters to a new healthy snack!

My Halloween Costumes Over the Years

I love dressing up for Halloween.

I love the process of coming up with a unique costume, finding all of the pieces and transforming into someone else. I love dressing up so much, I will use any excuse to put on a costume.

  • I threw my mom a surprise 50th birthday party with a Studio 54 theme (a PG version). We all dressed in 1970's costumes.
  • My girlfriend Rachel and I made Lady Gaga costumes when we saw her in concert in Portland, Ore. in 2010.
  • In 2011, I had a Royal Wedding themed birthday party. It was the year William and Kate got married, so everything was British-themed.
  • From 2008 to 2013, I threw Ugly Christmas Sweater parties.
  • For my 32nd birthday, I had a Sweet 16 x 2 party. I wore a princessy pink dress, and we listened to 90's music and played 90's trivia. (I turned 16 in 1999)
  • I through a Big Lebowski themed party for the BF's 40th birthday! It was at a bowling alley, I made white Russian cupcakes, and everyone dressed up!
  • I've planned or helped plan a duck-themed baby shower, a cookies and milk-themed baby shower, a rain shower themed baby shower, a Candyland-themed kids birthday party and more I can't think of at the moment.

I love a theme, a costume and planning a party.

Healthy Halloween Goodie Bags for your Girlfriends

Halloween is just a few days away, so I decided to create some healthy goodie bags for the ladies in my morning bootcamp.

We've been working out together at the outdoor fitness pad twice a week since July! It's finally getting too cold for our 6 a.m. workouts, so this morning was our last workout. It was freezing this morning!

Back in July, I had this idea to start a morning workout group, and I thought it would last through the summer. But we just kept going. I'm actually a little sad that our group won't be meeting anymore. We all got to know each other over these last four months, and I looked forward to our conversations each morning as much as the workouts.

I'm also really proud of the women that stuck with the early morning workouts even when summer ended and the mornings were no longer warm and the sun was no longer rising during our workouts. It takes dedication to get up at 5:30 a.m. every Monday and Wednesday and drive to a park to workout in the dark!

The group also inspired me. It's so hard for me to get up early to workout! But everyone was so dedicated and enthusiastic, it made getting out of bed easy most mornings.

So I thought my morning workout crew deserved some treats for their hard work over the past four months!

I had a relaxing and sleep-filled weekend, which was exactly what I needed. Last weekend, I didn't get much rest and I was feeling it all week.

We did make time for fun…the BF and I celebrated Halloween with friends, we enjoyed two date night dinners out, and I got out and enjoyed the beautiful fall weather with my family.

Happy Halloween! 

The BF and I don't have any Halloween plans this year. He'll be working late, so I'll be at home giving out candy to the seven kids who stop by our house. 

We had a much-needed weekend out of town. We've both still been feeling like the house is overwhelmingly empty since we put our dog, Coda, down a couple of weeks ago. So we decided to take a road trip for the weekend.
