The Best {Crunch-Free} Ab Workout

This week, I started teaching a core strength class at the University of Nebraska at Kearney Wellness Center (I work at UNK for my day job). 

I'm excited about teaching this class because having a strong core is so important! Not only do core exercises help you sculpt flat abs, they help strengthen your back, improve your breathing and improve your balance and posture.

But, to be honest, I'm not so much into crunches. I think they can be a bit boring. Which is why I created this crunch-free workout for my first class!

Staying active and healthy during the holidays can be tough! There is a constant flow of food, your schedule gets packed with parties and family gatherings and lounging on the couch in flannel pajamas watching holiday movies just sounds so much more inviting than going out in the cold to workout!

But there's nothing worse than starting a new year with the goal of losing a bunch of weight you gained during the holidays or having to get in shape all over again because you skipped out on workouts for a couple of months.

For the past few years, I've created a holiday weight management program on Sweet Success. It's been a great way (for me!) to to stay on track during the holidays. But it's not happening this year. I don't have time to get it together.

The Fitness Games Review + a quick at-home booty workout!

It has been absolutely freezing here in Nebraska. It's been the type of cold that just chills your insides and makes you want to put on all the clothes and curl up on the couch to keep warm! 

But I decided that this can't become my winter uniform (even though I swore it was going to be when I posted this pic on Instagram!). 

I think the best way to warm up is to move! But what do you do when leaving the house to hit the gym or go for a run isn't an option? Hello, 6 degrees! I don't think so. 

Workout in your living room! I've been loving at-home workouts lately, and I've been using The Fitness Games app for quick, but powerful workouts I can do without going out into the cold.

Weekend Recap {Nov. 14-16}

My weekend didn't turn out exactly how I had planned, but I just went with it and ended up having a nice few days. 

I didn't get in as many workouts as I planned, but my body definitely needed a rest. I mentioned in my Week of Workouts post that I taught lots of fitness classes last week, and I've been having some hip pain. I'm trying to be better at listening to my body. 

The best part of my weekend was spending time with people I care about! I spent lots of quality time with the BF, my niece, my parents and the BF's sister and grandmother, dad and stepmom.

Week of Workouts {Nov. 29 - Dec. 5}

I had another week of headaches and migraines (starting Monday), so my workouts were pretty minimal. I taught my usual classes, and didn't do anything else. My headaches were pretty crazy this week.

I was in so much pain Thursday night that I couldn't sleep, and got up Friday morning feeling exhausted and still in pain. I ended up staying home from work to try to get my headache under control. Being at work makes it so much harder because I look at a computer screen all day under florescent lighting. I spent most of Friday laying in the same place on the couch. I started to feel better in the afternoon so I did some yoga for headaches and a meditation for pain.

I've mentioned this before, but my headaches are hormonal. I had them under control for about 6 months, then they came back a few months ago. I basically have anywhere from a dull headache to a migraine for 5 days straight. It's exhausting physically and emotionally. I have an appointment with my doctor in January!

Also, one of my December goals is to do yoga every day. I didn't include all of my yoga sessions in my recap because most days this week I did a short (10 min.) practice on my own without a video.

I seriously need to get back to my regular yoga practice!

I've been teaching extra fitness classes for the past few weeks, and I've barely been able to get in any other workouts. Which is also why I haven't posted a Week of Workouts post in a long time. It's too boring to read about all the fitness classes I'm teaching.

But I'm not subbing any more classes, I cut one class from my schedule and I will finally have time to do my very own workouts again! The one thing I miss the most is yoga.

So I'm excited that SweatPink and prAna are launching the #TakeTheLeap 30 Days of Yoga Challenge. This is exactly what I need right now.

I'm just a little bit more than halfway through the #TakeTheLeap 30 Day Yoga Challenge organized by SweatPink and prAna!!

I joined the challenge to get back into a regular yoga routine. For awhile, I was teaching up to eight fitness classes a week and yoga wasn't happening. I'm currently teaching five classes a week right now, so I have a little more time to get in my own workouts.

Now that I've done yoga every day for over 15 days, I'm feeling great!

Week of Workouts {March 7-13}

Wow, it's been a looooong week. The weather here in Nebraska as been ah-mazing (in the upper 60's, mid-70's all week). I am so ready for spring!

But while it's been beautiful outside, the temperature in my office has been hovering between 81-86 degrees. Ugh!!


I've had my fan blowing directly on me! As you can see, I wasn't thrilled.

It has been really awful, and has made working incredibly challenging. By mid-afternoon I just felt so lethargic and uncomfortable. Feeling hot all day made after-work workouts feel super challenging. My early morning workouts even felt difficult just because the heat sucked my energy.

But it's the weekend, and I can now be in my comfortable home or outside enjoying the wonderful weather.

It's been FOREVER since I shared a week of workouts with you! I've been holding off because for a long time, I was just teaching fitness classes. I've been struggling with fitting in my own workouts with teaching fitness classes (which I've probably mentioned a few dozen times ; )

I'm finally doing some of my own workouts! I admit however, that I don't have a perfect balance. Sometimes I feel like I'm doing way too much. I definitely don't recommend all the two-a-day (or even three-a-day) workouts I've been doing.

I'm worried about overtraining, so I'm working on dialing it down in the classes that I teach. I teach all active classes (meaning I do the workout with my class), but I've been trying to instruct more than do lately. This allows me to have more energy for my own workouts and not overtrain my muscles (hopefully).

It was an incredibly hard decision, but I cut one of my fitness classes from my schedule. I've been struggling to fit in my weekday half-marathon training runs, so I cut my Thursday evening deep water aerobics class to give me time for running.

One of my goals is to incorporate more strength training into my routine (since I do sooooo much cardio), so I've also been working on that.

5 Fat Burning Outdoor HIIT Workouts

For a little over a month, I've been leading outdoor bootcamp/HIIT workouts at our local Outdoor Fitness Pad.

I really just wanted to add some HIIT training into my exercise routine, and I wanted some accountability. So I asked the Facebook world if anyone would be interested in some free workouts. I received a pretty good response, and I started creating workouts. So far, I've had 2-7 people at each workout!

We meet at 6 a.m. Mondays and Wednesdays, and all of the workouts last about 30 minutes.

Black Bean Super Seed Brownies

Chocolate makes everything better, right?

Brownies are definitely one of my favorite sweet comfort foods. There's nothing quite like the gooey chocolatey goodness of a brownie.

And if you've never tried making black bean brownies, you are totally missing out. The taste of the black beans completely disappears, and you don't have to use any flour! The black beans add tons of fiber and make the brownies super moist.

I found a recipe for black bean hemp brownies on the Manitoba Harvest website that looked delicious. I decided to add another superfood seed to the recipe to make the brownies even more nutritious! And Black Bean Super Seed Brownies were born.
