Happy National Chocolate Day + Almond Butter Chocolate Sauce

Posted July 7, 2014 in recipe, chocolate, dessert and 5 more

I know you're trying to get back to the real world after celebrating the Fourth of July, but you must keep the party going! It's National Chocolate Day!

Chocolate is definitely my fave sweet treat - chocolate cake, chocolate chip cookies, chocolate ice cream. Mmmmmm. I could eat chocolate every day.

But sadly, I can't sustain myself on chocolatey desserts. So when I'm craving chocolate, I make this amazing, healthier chocolate sauce.

Weekend Recap {Oct. 31-Nov. 2) - Murder Mystery Party

Posted November 3, 2014 in Weekend Recap, weekend, yoga and 6 more

I went into the weekend feeling like I was getting a cold, and fully intended to get lots of rest. Well, that didn't really happen. I felt like I was on the go all weekend. And I'm, unfortunately, feeling worse today.

But it was a great weekend full of lots of family time, fun with friends and some Halloween treats!

Dark Chocolate Almond Butter Dip

Posted February 5, 2015 in Valentine's Day, chocolate, fruit and 5 more

Valentine's Day is around the corner, so all I'm thinking about is chocolate!!

This may be hard to believe (it is to me), but I haven't had a single bite of chocolate in nearly a month!! What?!?!

I eliminated sugar during my elimination diet, and I haven't reintroduced it yet. The crazy thing is that I haven't been having nearly as many sweet cravings as I did before. It was seriously magical giving up sugar!!

When I do reintroduce sugar, I'm going to stick to natural forms or healthier dark chocolate.

This dark chocolate almond butter dip is one of my favorite easy and healthy ways to satisfy my sweet tooth. I'm sure I've mentioned this little concoction on the blog before, but I had to share it again. That's how much I love it!!

And this is the perfect recipe for Self-Love February! It is full of protein and antioxidants, and if you have it with fruit you'll be adding tons of extra nutrients!

Chocolate Chia Pudding

Posted February 10, 2015 in chocolate, self-love, Self-Love February and 6 more

Chia pudding is one of my fave sweet treats! It's super easy to whip together, it's delicious and it's full of nutrients.

Chia seeds are full of fiber, antioxidants and omega-3 fatty acids. What's better than satisfying your sweet tooth and nourishing your body?

I usually just throw together some almond milk, chia seeds and a natural sweetener, but I decided to make a chocolate version to satisfy my chocolate cravings.

It was delicious!

Sexy Chocolate Recipes for Valentine's Day

Posted February 12, 2015 in chocolate, Valentine's Day, sweets and 5 more

I've mentioned before that I don't think you need to be in a relationship to enjoy Valentine's Day. I've had too many sad single V Days, so I want you to embrace the day and make it fabulous!! (Here are 7 ways to Treat Yo Self on Valentine's Day and some fitness gifts you can get for yourself!

Whether you're planning a sexy date with your man or lady, planning a fun girl's night or hanging solo on Valentine's Day, I highly recommend enjoying some delicious (and sexy) chocolate.

Why is chocolate so sexy, you ask? Flavanols in cocoa beans have antioxidants that reduce cell damage, help lower blood pressure and improve vascular function. (source) Stick to dark chocolate and you'll get more of the benefits!

Before we get into these amazing recipes, check out this video about How to Manage Your Valentine's Day Expectations from Gabby Bernstein. I love this. We get way too caught up in what we think the day should be. Just resolve to have fun no matter what.

Pre-Workout Energy Balls

Posted February 27, 2015 in workout, recipe, healthy eating and 6 more

Earlier this week, I made these delicious energy balls for my essential oils get together. They were a hit!

A perfect little healthy party snack, but an even better pre-workout energy booster. They're perfect to eat before a workout because of the carb/protein combo. (I also like to eat them to satisfy my sweet tooth)

I got the recipe from my office neighbor, Lee. She brings these energy balls to work every few months, and they always go fast! Lee was kind enough to allow me to share her recipe!

Self-Love February Recap

Posted February 28, 2015 in Self-Love February, self love, self-care and 11 more

Today is the last day of Self-Love February. I hope you go into March feeling a little more love for yourself!

Creating content based on this theme was really important to me because there are so many women (and men) who spend too much time criticizing themselves, which leads to self-hate, which leads to not treating your body with care.

Each week this month, I challenged you to do something every day that would help you love yourself a little more. If you didn't participate or missed a week, do it in March (or April or May). Finding self-love is a journey and takes work!

Here's a recap of Self-Love February...

Sweet and Salty Chocolate Almond Candy

*My local HyVee provided me with Blue Diamond Nut-Thins. All opinions are my own

I've been buying Blue Diamond Nut-Thins for awhile, so when HyVee gave me a box of the Almond Nut-Thins in Hint of Sea Salt and a box of Artisan Nut-Thins in Asiago Cheese I was super excited. But when they suggested I try a recipe using the crackers, I was intrigued.

I've never thought of using crackers in a recipe, especially a sweet treat.

Post-Workout-Chocolate-Smoothie-3.jpg#as

I've been pretty obsessed with turmeric lately. I've mostly been putting it in my morning immunity boosting concoction - orange juice, ginger, turmeric, cinnamon and honey (I'm getting ready to travel so I'm getting myself as healthy as possible!).

But after a run recently, I had a random idea to throw some turmeric in my chocolate smoothie. Sounds weird, I know. Especially since turmeric is a savory spice used in curry. But turmeric contains more than two dozen anti-inflammatory compounds (source), so I thought it would be the perfect smoothie add-in after a workout. Because inflammation occurs in muscles after workouts, I try to eat anti-inflammatory foods to prevent soreness.

I also think turmeric is a magical healing spice. Seriously!

Chocolate Superfood Snack Balls

Posted July 28, 2015 in snack balls, healthy eating, healthy living and 8 more

I created another snack ball recipe! I'm created quite the collection of these recipes here on Sweet Success.

Cashew Cookie Balls

Pre-Workout Energy Balls

Post-Workout Vanilla Protein Balls

I love making energy balls or snack balls because they're the perfect little snack before or after workouts, or to satisfy my sweet tooth. For me, they take the place of store-bought bars. While I do think there are some great snack bars out there (KIND and Larabars are my faves), I do think it's more cost effective to make your own.

I usually throw together snack balls with the ingredients I have on hand. For these Chocolate Superfood Balls, I got the bright idea to throw all of my favorite superfoods together to create a nutrient-dense snack ball that would satisfy my sweet cravings.

Healthy Halloween Goodie Bags for your Girlfriends

Posted October 28, 2015 in Halloween, healthy eating, healthy halloween treats and 10 more

Halloween is just a few days away, so I decided to create some healthy goodie bags for the ladies in my morning bootcamp.

We've been working out together at the outdoor fitness pad twice a week since July! It's finally getting too cold for our 6 a.m. workouts, so this morning was our last workout. It was freezing this morning!

Back in July, I had this idea to start a morning workout group, and I thought it would last through the summer. But we just kept going. I'm actually a little sad that our group won't be meeting anymore. We all got to know each other over these last four months, and I looked forward to our conversations each morning as much as the workouts.

I'm also really proud of the women that stuck with the early morning workouts even when summer ended and the mornings were no longer warm and the sun was no longer rising during our workouts. It takes dedication to get up at 5:30 a.m. every Monday and Wednesday and drive to a park to workout in the dark!

The group also inspired me. It's so hard for me to get up early to workout! But everyone was so dedicated and enthusiastic, it made getting out of bed easy most mornings.

So I thought my morning workout crew deserved some treats for their hard work over the past four months!

Black Bean Super Seed Brownies

Posted October 30, 2015 in hemp hearts, Manitoba Harvest, FitApproach and 7 more

*I received the opportunity to write about Manitoba Harvest Hemp Hearts through my ambassadorship with FitApproach. Manitoba Harvest sent me a package of hemp hearts to enjoy. All opinions are my own.

Chocolate makes everything better, right?

Brownies are definitely one of my favorite sweet comfort foods. There's nothing quite like the gooey chocolatey goodness of a brownie.

And if you've never tried making black bean brownies, you are totally missing out. The taste of the black beans completely disappears, and you don't have to use any flour! The black beans add tons of fiber and make the brownies super moist.

I found a recipe for black bean hemp brownies on the Manitoba Harvest website that looked delicious. I decided to add another superfood seed to the recipe to make the brownies even more nutritious! And Black Bean Super Seed Brownies were born.

Dark Chocolate Pomegranate Cups {just 3 ingredients}

Posted December 15, 2015 in chocolate, pomegranate seeds, holidays and 9 more

I'm getting so excited for Christmas baking. I love spending a day in the kitchen with my KitchenAid mixer making delicious sweet treats.

Baking during the holidays always brings back great memories of baking Christmas cookies with my mom and dad, brother, aunt and cousins. Some of my favorite holiday cookies from my childhood include peanut butter blossoms, peanut butter balls (for some reason my family calls them zit crunchies), cherry mash and homemade Mounds. When my grandfather was alive, he would make homemade fudge and chess pies. So delicious!

Although I have lots of great memories from the baking process and from enjoying my family's treats, I also remember overindulging in sweets and feeling sick, lethargic, bloated and gross. So a few years ago, I started making some of my own healthier sweet treats using less sugar or natural sweeteners. I found that I didn't indulge in as many cookies, but I still felt like I was getting a special holiday treat.

Peppermint Mocha {with protein}

Posted December 15, 2016 in Peppermint Mocha, coffee, chocolate and 5 more

Peppermint-Mocha-with-Protein.png#asset:

It has been so cold lately that all I want to do is cuddle up under a blanket and drink something warm.

I don't normally go for sweet coffee drinks, but I was craving something warm and sweet one cold afternoon and this peppermint mocha happened.

Most coffee shop versions are high in calories, and are full of sugar and syrups made with artificial ingredients. But my recipe is full of good-for-you nutrition and doesn't contain any sugar.
