How to make your own smoothie packs

Posted March 18, 2015 in smoothie, fruit, vegetables and 6 more

How was your St. Patrick's Day?

The BF made corned beef and cabbage in the crock pot all day, I made a turkey shepherd's pie and my parents came over for dinner. I also enjoyed a Guinness and a mini salted caramel cupcake while we listened to Irish music on Pandora. It was a fun night!

Today I wanted to share how I make smoothie packs. This is something I recently started doing, and it's a huge time saver!

The Superfood You Must Add to Your Green Smoothies

*Nuts.com provided the inspiration for me to share how I use spirulina.

During the summer, I am a smoothie-making machine! I actually love smoothies all year round, but smoothies taste even more delicious when it's extra hot outside.

I really don't have a go-to smoothie. I like to mix things up to keep my smoothies interesting. But I do love making green smoothies. They always turn out so beautifully, and they are packed with nutrients.

One of the ingredients I always add to my green smoothies is spirulina, a blue-green micro-algae that grows in fresh water lakes and streams. Why?!?!? You might be asking me/yourself.

Everything you need to know about kale!

Posted October 7, 2015 in National Kale Day, kale, recipes and 8 more

Kale has been having a major moment for awhile now, but it seems like people either love it, hate it or are scared to try it.

Almost every time that I buy kale, the grocery store associate ringing up my groceries says she's never tried kale before and doesn't know what to do with it. I always suggest massaging the kale, and I get blank stares.

So today I'm putting it all out there. I'm sharing everything you need to know about kale!

Posted March 7, 2016 in Weekend Recap, Mahoney State Park, running and 8 more

I'm home after a long weekend at Mahoney State Park with the BF and some friends. We had a wonderful time!

It was a weekend full of hiking, playing games, laughing, eating delicious food, indulging in s'mores and cake, and relaxing.

Our 'cabining' trips are my favorite trips because I always feel rejuvenated physically, emotionally and mentally after these trips. There's no pressure to go, go, go. Being at the cabin is very easy going.

Here's a recap of the weekend...

Join me for Sugar Free April!!

Posted March 28, 2016 in Sugar Free April, 28-Day detox, healthy eating and 8 more

I'm going sugar free in April, and I'd love for you to join me!

As a gal with a major sweet tooth, I know what it's like to have out of control cravings for sugar. I also know what it feels like to be eating a diet FULL of sugar. I used to feel bloated, fatigued and guilty.

I'm currently transitioning to an anti-inflammatory diet to deal with a health issue, and the two things that are hardest for me to ditch - sugar and dairy. I recently realized that I was indulging in a few too many dark chocolate covered almonds and enjoying too many extra sweets.

So in April, we're all getting rid of sugar! Why? Well, for one, sugar has no nutrients, no protein, no healthy fats and no enzymes. So it's not doing us any good. But here's just a few things sugar is doing to our bodies...

How Greens Can Reduce Your Sugar Cravings

Posted April 20, 2016 in greens, sugar cravings, healthy eating and 6 more

Yes, eating more salads could help get rid of your out of control sugar cravings!

At one point in my life, I was surviving off of Life cereal, doughnuts, pasta, breadsticks, Pasta-Roni and soft serve ice cream.

My all carb all sugar diet left me craving sugar all day long. My cravings were caused, in part, by the roller coaster my blood sugar levels were on all day.

But I was also craving sugar because there was something incredibly important missing from my diet - adequate nutrition.

I can't believe that I'm almost finished with yoga teacher training! I only have one weekend left!

This weekend was incredibly physical and intense. Last week was a very emotional week, so I wasn't super excited about being immersed in yoga all weekend. But teacher training ended up being a good distraction.

All the positive energy through yoga practice, meditation and from everyone in my class was what I needed.

If you're feeling bloated and tired from overindulging in sugary treats, it's time to detox!

Although I don't detox regularly, I do think it can be beneficial if you've been eating too much sugar and you find yourself having uncontrollable sugar cravings.

Detoxing can be especially helpful after a treat-filled holiday. If you don't ditch the sugar immediately after your holiday sugar binge, you'll find yourself craving sugar and indulging in more sugar for days, weeks or even months. Then it will be even harder to ditch the sweets!

So get started today with my simple sugar detox!

What I Eat in a Day {Jan. 24, 2017}

Posted January 25, 2017 in dairy free cooking, What I Eat in a Day, dairy free and 5 more

What-I-Eat-in-a-Day.png#asset:7403:mediu

Ever wonder what a health coach eats throughout the day? Today I'm sharing every single thing that I ate yesterday!

Tuesdays are my longest days, so it's important that I eat for optimal energy. I teach fitness classes at 5:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. and work my 8 to 5 in between, so it's a long day that requires plenty of energy.

I'm usually pretty tired by the time I get home, which is why I try to keep dinner simple - leftovers or something easy to throw together.

I'm currently not eating dairy, and I usually only eat meat a couple times a week. Tuesday just happened to be a dairy-free, meat-free day (not vegan because I ate eggs).

I don't count calories or track my food. I simply focus on eating whole foods that will make me feel my best.

Here's a look at my entire day...

It's been a rough week over here. I'm home from work for a second day this week with a gross cold/sinus thing.

I can't stop sneezing, my eyes won't stop watering, my head is pounding and I'm just exhausted.

I actually haven't been sick in over a year! I credit my year of health to the fact that I've been on top of my nutrition game...drinking greens almost every day, staying super hydrated, drinking my antioxidant supplement, taking a daily probiotic and multivitamin (which has an antioxidant-rich spice blend) and drinking all the smoothies. I honestly can't believe I made it through last year - a year with a constantly packed schedule and lots of stress - without getting sick.

It seems like lots of people have been walking around with some kind of sickness lately, so I thought I would share some of the natural remedies I use when I'm sick...

My Top 4 Foods for Daily Detox

Posted March 16, 2017 in daily detox, detoxifying foods, detox and 4 more

Adding detoxifying foods into your diet is super easy! These four detox foods can improve your digestion, reduce inflammation and provide your body with a lot of nourishment.

Top-4-Foods-for-daily-detox-1.png#asset:

I've been on a journey to balance my hormones to eliminate hormonal headaches and migraines, improve my energy and lose some extra weight my body has been holding onto.

Working closely with my functional medicine doctor, I've made some dietary changes (eliminating dairy) and some lifestyle changes (getting off birth control and adding supplements to my daily routine). My hormonal migraines have been completely eliminated and my energy has increased so much.

I recently had my six-month appointment to go over my blood work results, and I learned that my estrogen levels are still high (which is causing some PMS symptoms) and my liver enzymes are high. So I've been increasing the amount of detoxifying foods in my diet to assist my liver in its cleansing process.

While I've added more detoxifying foods into my diet for a very specific reason, everyone can benefit from increasing the amount of cleansing foods in their daily diet.

Weekend Recap {March 31 - April 2, 2017}

Posted April 4, 2017 in Weekend Recap, detox, yoga and 3 more

Why do weekends fly by so quickly!?! I always feel like I need another day to do all the things I never got to over the weekend, or just relax and do nothing.

I ended up working quite a bit over the weekend because I had a workshop out of town and I also had a meeting for gathering information and insight about my business.

But the BF and I made time for fun (a movie and a hike) and time with family.

Summer is officially here, which means more hours of sunshine, spending more time outdoors and wearing all the maxi dresses!

I absolutely love this time of year. Even though I no longer have summers off, (remember those days?) I still think there's a feeling of freedom in the summertime.

Maybe it's the longer days or all the opportunities to play outside.

I've had people tell me that it's harder to eat healthy in the summer because of all the outdoor barbecues, summer cocktails and travel.

I actually think it's easier to make healthy choices in the summer with the abundance of in-season fresh produce. The body also changes with the seasons, and we tend to crave lighter foods this time of year like giant salads and smoothies. And there's always room in our diets for summer cocktails and our favorite grilling out foods.

But we could all use some simple strategies for staying healthy during the summer, so I'm sharing a few of my summer wellness hacks...

Weekend Recap {July 7-9, 2017}

Posted July 10, 2017 in Weekend Recap, yoga, meal planning and 6 more

Another summer weekend has come and gone. After having two long weekends, it was sad to have a regular old two day weekend.

However, I'm home from work today.

I'm not sure if everything is just a coincidence and unrelated or if everything is connected, but I have a cluster of painful and itchy bug bites on my neck, I have an intense pain from my jaw to my shoulder, I have a terrible headache and my throat is sore.

It all started last Wednesday, so after six days of being in pain I'm exhausted. I also started to go down a spiral worrying about having a bacterial infection, meningitis or some other awful illness.

Luckily, I don't have anything on my schedule today. So I'm currently watching Dawson's Creek from the beginning (I haven't watched it since high school!) and I'm staying in my pajamas all day.

I wasn't feeling well all weekend, so I spent a fair amount of time relaxing. But I also pushed through my pain for a date night and a trip to the lake for some beach time.

Simple Ways to Eat More Vegetables (without spending hours prepping)

Posted September 27, 2017 in vegetables, healthy eating, greens and 4 more

Struggling to eat enough vegetables because you just don't have time for all that washing, peeling and chopping? I have some solutions for you.

Simple-Ways-to-Eat-More-Vegetables.png#a

One thing that I hear most from my health coaching clients is that preparing meals with fresh vegetables takes too much time. All the washing, peeling and chopping just isn't convenient.

I get it. On nights when I get home late after teaching a yoga class or meeting with a health coaching client the last thing I want to do is spend a lot of time cutting up vegetables then cooking a meal.

But vegetables are a must. Vegetables are full of nutrients, vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and fiber. When eaten consistently, vegetables improve your overall health by supporting your digestion, skeletal system and blood pressure, keeping your hair, skin and nails healthy, helping to manage your weight, and preventing disease.

Luckily, there are a few simple things we can do to eat more vegetables.
