A Healthy Holiday Cocktail Party

Happy Holidays!

I absolutely love this time of year. Spending extra time with friends and family, shopping for the perfect gifts, sending Christmas cards, decorating the house, wrapping gifts, baking holiday cookies, watching Christmas movies. I love every single thing.

I also love throwing parties, which is why I decided to plan a healthy holiday cocktail party!

A few months ago, I started throwing healthy dinner parties. I invited women that I didn't know particularly well, but I knew they were interested in health and fitness. Each guest brought healthy dishes to the parties, and we just chatted about working out, eating healthy, running, etc.

I wanted December's party to be extra special, so I asked local businesses to donate items that would help my guests have the healthiest holiday season possible. Everyone that I asked was so generous! All of my guests went home with amazing goodie bags, and we even had some giveaways!

7 Things I've Learned From Health Coaching

Last night, I celebrated the end of my studies at the Institute for Integrative Nutrition by watching my virtual graduation!

Since the classes are all online, and IIN is based in NYC, all the graduates from my class (who live around the world) could watch the graduation online and connect in our Facebook group. It was so exciting to see so many people launching careers as health coaches.

My love of IIN was solidified when we did a meditation during our graduation ; )

I've loved every second of my classes at IIN. I have learned so much. What I wasn't expecting was how much I would learn about myself. Before I started taking classes, I thought of myself as being pretty healthy. But IIN taught me to how to truly listen to my body and the importance of practicing self-care.

How to Lose Weight and Feel Amazing This Fall

My niece, Brynn, is headed back to school today! She's in fourth grade now, which I can't believe.

While it's been ages since I was preparing for fall classes (I graduated from college 10 years ago this month!), and I don't have any kids, I actually love back to school time and the transition to fall.

I'm not quite ready to let go of warm, sunny days, and summer adventures, but I have started thinking about fall.

Autumn is a season of transition and change. Leaves change to orange, red and brown and the weather begins to cool. While nature is transitioning, it's also a good time to think about your own transformation.

I'm super excited it's Friday and it's a holiday weekend. I totally need it. I recently completed Social Academy Bootcamp with BexLife and Danny J, and there are soooooo many things I want to do to improve my blog and my brand.

Getting Back on Track After the Holidays

While I do make time to exercise and make it a priority to eat mostly healthy meals during the holidays, I definitely indulge more than usual.

I ate more sweets than I typically do, I indulged in a comical amount of cheese and I drank wine almost daily during my nearly two weeks off from work.

Happy Friday!!

I started off my Friday by making an appearance on a local news show The Good Life to talk about my upcoming Kick Your Sugar Cravings Workshop! I get so flustered when I'm on live TV! But I survived.

I'm glad it's Friday, but I have a work-heavy weekend ahead of me. I'm going to have a booth at a local conference, so I'll be talking health coaching all weekend long. It will be fun, but I'm definitely going to miss my usual slow mornings, yoga class and Netflix/Hulu watching.

Should you lose weight or just accept yourself as you are?

One of my health coaching clients recently asked me if it's ok that she wants to lose weight even though her weight doesn't have a negative impact on her health. Should she just learn to love her body as it is?

Her question made me realize that weight loss has suddenly become out of fashion with the current body acceptance movement.

Don't get me wrong, I love that it's now on trend to love our bodies. We've always had the right to be happy regardless of our shape or size, but the media and society is finally sending that message.

It's amazing to see women of all sizes on the cover of Women's Running or in Modcloth and Target ads. 

But how does weight loss fit into to all that.

4 Tips for Dealing with Overwhelm

As I drove to work today, I had this overwhelmingly intense tension in my chest and throat. 

I kept replaying my to-do lists (yes, lists) over and over again in my mind, thinking about the disarray (and let's be honest, dirtiness) of my house and my schedule, which had me going non-stop until 9 p.m.

I wanted to turn my car around, drive home and climb back under my sheets. 

These feelings of overwhelming stress are actually somewhat new to me. For just over a year, I've been working full-time, running my health coaching business, blogging, teaching fitness classes, selling a nutrition line and more recently I've been doing yoga teacher training. All this sprinkled in with volunteering for a few organizations, creating a new group for entrepreneurs in my community and preparing to teach a college course in the fall.

While I practice self-care daily to manage my stress and create a bit of balance in my life, I occasionally have a mini meltdown. When I do, these are the steps that I take to take back control and find some calmness...

The Best Apps for Meditation

During my health coaching workshops, I always bring up meditation. 

Whether I'm talking about kicking sugar cravings, eating for energy or women's health, my talks always move away from food and toward self-care and eventually to meditation. 

Meditation usually comes up when I discuss primary foods - relationships, career, physical activity and spirituality. I love talking about primary foods (the foods we eat are secondary foods) because everything is connected. 

If we're miserable in our job, we feel stressed and anxious, which may make it difficult to sleep. Not getting enough sleep will make it harder to choose healthy foods and have the motivation to workout. Not eating well or working out decreases self-esteem and could make you moody. Moodiness will impact relationships, which will cause more stress. 

Meditation can help us reduce stress and anxiety, get more in touch with ourselves, increase self-acceptance and self-esteem, improve our mood, increase relaxation, make us more optimistic and make us healthier. Meditation can be a great first step in increasing self-awareness to begin to make healthy changes.

Four Reasons Why You're Not Losing Weight

Struggling to lose weight? These four things could be holding you back from finding your healthy weight.


I was recently thinking back to when I first started my weight loss journey. I constantly felt overwhelmed by all the different diets, health magazines and wellness blogs. 

I would start a plan, eat a food or meal that wasn't on the plan, and feel like I totally failed. My guilt about failing yet another diet plan would send me down a spiral of binge eating, feeling guilty then looking for another plan to jump into.

I always thought it was me. I didn't have enough willpower or I didn't want it enough. 

When I finally realized that it wasn't me, it was dieting, I felt free! But letting go of that dieting mindset can be a challenge.
