How I plan to stay healthy during my trip to Georgia

Posted June 25, 2014 in travel, Georgia, healthy living and 6 more

Staying healthy while traveling is hard! Airports don't usually have tons of healthy options. You have to eat out for nearly every meal. When you go-go-go, you are exhausted and crave carbs. And you give yourself an excuse to eat all the food because you're on vacation!

I do believe it's possible to have a healthy vacation. But it takes planning!

I'm heading to Georgia this week for an 11-day adventure - FitBloggin Conference in Savannah + vacation time + being a bridesmaid in my cousin's wedding in Atlanta. I want to feel fit, healthy and full of energy during this trip, so I'm planning ahead to make sure this trip is a healthy one.

Here's my stay healthy plan:

What I'm taking to Georgia

Posted June 26, 2014 in travel, vacation, healthy travel and 3 more

What does one pack for an 11 day trip to the south in the middle of summer?

That's a good question. I was a bit overwhelmed about packing for this trip because so much will be happening - 2 days of travel, 2 days in Savannah for FitBloggin, 1 day of hiking, 4 low key days in Atlanta and 2 days of wedding celebration. I need everything from dirty hiking clothes to a bridesmaid dress!

I'll spare you all the details of my suitcase, but I thought I would share a few things that will help me out during this adventure.

8 Tips for Staying in Shape on Summer Vacation

*This post is written in partnership with Vegas.com, but all opinions are my own

How many times have you returned home from vacation and felt like your pants were more snug than when you left? Almost every time right? Eating out constantly, indulging in more treats and booze than usual and getting away from your usual workout routine are all culprits.

But I totally believe you can go on vacation, have fun, indulge and come home feeling the same way you did when you left home!

Arizona Recap

Posted October 21, 2014 in travel, vacation, Arizona and 7 more

I took a little break from blogging and social media last week because I was in Arizona to attend a wedding! Our friends, Russanne and Justin, (who live here in Nebraska) got married in Mesa.

It was such a wonderful trip. The weather was warm, I got to enjoy lots of pool time, I saw the beautiful Arizona mountains and desert and I spent tons of quality time with the BF and our friends. I also ate some delicious food! This was an indulgent trip for sure.

I'm sharing my Arizona experience in two parts because I took tons of photos and I can't edit myself. I want to share everything!

Bolder Boulder 2015 Recap

Posted May 27, 2015 in Bolder Boulder, run, running and 8 more

The BF and I ran Bolder Boulder on Memorial Day! It was such a fun race!

We've run this race together four times, and I think this was my favorite. We really took our time, enjoyed the people watching, the bands, the activities (Slip n' Slide), and we stopped to take lots of photos.

We had decided to take it slow this year because I have plantar fasciitis and tendinitis (read more about it here). We thought we would end up walking a lot because of my foot injury. But we ended up running slowly, walking at the water stations and stopped for activities and selfies.

Here's a recap of the race...

How to eat healthy on a camping adventure

Posted June 11, 2015 in camping, Yellowstone, travel and 5 more

I'm going to Yellowstone National Park!!

The BF and I have been planning this trip since the beginning of the year, and it's finally here! We are staying in a hotel, a cabin, a campground then another hotel. So it will be interesting!

This trip has taken a lot of planning. I'm totally Type A and made a 5-page itinerary, printed out maps (just in case of no WiFi or phone service), created a page-long packing list and made a meal plan. I'm crazy.

The BF's sister, Betsy, her husband, Matt, and their kids, Payton and Cooper, are joining us on this little adventure. They live in Washington, and will meet us at the park!

Since there will be six people to feed, we split up the meal responsibilities. The BF and I will bring a few meals, and their family will bring a few meals. We'll have a grill and a campfire at our campsite.

I'm back from my Yellowstone adventure!

The BF and I returned home at 5:25 p.m. Sunday night, and it was bittersweet.

I was extremely excited to shower in my own bathroom and sleep in my own bed after 10 days of hotels, a cabin and campsites. But I was a little sad to return to real life after day after day of amazing adventures.

I'm going to share some more detailed recaps, but today I want to share what I learned on this trip. I had some pretty great realizations during this trip…

Grand Teton National Park Recap

Posted June 24, 2015 in travel, Grand Teton National Park, healthy living and 7 more

I've decided to recap my Yellowstone camping adventures in four installments - Yellowstone Half-Marathon, Grand Tetons, Yellowstone and South Dakota. Hopefully this will be an organized way to tell you about my trip. I may even space out my posts so you don't get travel post overload.

For a little context, I traveled with the BF, and his sister, Betsy, her husband, Matt, and their kids, Payton and Cooper, met us in Yellowstone for a fun family vacation.

After the half-marathon on Saturday, June 13, we left West Yellowstone to head toward the Grand Tetons. When I started planning this trip, the half-marathon wasn't part of the plan. It probably would have made more sense to go to Yellowstone from West Yellowstone, Montana, then stay in the Grand Tetons. But you live and you learn.

FitBloggin 2015 Recap

Posted June 29, 2015 in FitBloggin, travel, Denver and 9 more

I left for Denver last Thursday for FitBloggin 2015!! I went last year when it was in Savannah, and I had an amazing time. So I was super excited for this year's conference.

However, I was a bit nervous. Last year, I had a roommate - Christina from Body Rebooted. Christina and I met on Twitter and decided to room together. Having an automatic friend made me feel a lot more comfortable when talking to sponsors, going to sessions, eating meals, etc.

This year, I went solo so I knew I would have to get out of my comfort zone and talk to people on my own. Eek!

Yellowstone National Park Trip Recap

"Wilderness is a necessity ... They will see what I meant in time. There must be places for human beings to satisfy their souls. Food and drink is not all. There is the spiritual. In some it is only a germ, of course, but the germ will grow." - John Muir

I really had no idea what to expect in Yellowstone. To be honest, I didn't know a lot about the park…Old Faithful, bears, wilderness. But I was completely blown away by the beauty of Yellowstone. I was also amazed at how little I knew about a park that is located 14 hours away from where I live. And I quickly realized that everyone else was in on the secret because I heard people speaking about a dozen languages throughout the park.

There was a quote featured near Old Faithful that mentions the spiritual energy at the park. When you're in Yellowstone, you really can feel that energy. Especially after you learn about the geological history of the park, and learn what's going on just miles below the earth's surface. It truly is a magical place.

Just a little context…the BF and I met his sister, Betsy, her husband, Matt, and their kids, Payton and Cooper, on this trip.

Colorado-Springs-2016-Seven-Falls-Title.

Last week, I went on a road trip to New Mexico with my family - my parents, brother, sister-in-law and niece.

Because it takes 12 hours to drive to Albuquerque (where my grandma and aunt live), we stayed a couple of nights in Colorado Springs, the halfway point.

I haven't spent much time in Colorado Springs before this trip, but now I want to go back! (I want to take the BF so we can go hiking and exploring!) It's an amazing city with so much to do.

Here's recap of our adventures and our eats...

New Mexico Recap

My family and I recently returned from a trip to New Mexico to visit my grandma and aunt. We stopped in Colorado Springs on our way to New Mexico. You can read about that part of our trip here

I love visiting New Mexico because it's so different from the Midwest. I love the architecture, food, art, culture and laid back vibe.

We stayed in Albuquerque, but we made a day trip to Santa Fe. Here's a recap of our adventures and New Mexican eats...

Atlanta Trip Recap

Last week, my mom and I flew to Atlanta to visit my cousin, her husband and their new baby. My aunt from Omaha was there visiting as well.

It was a wonderful trip full of laughs, baby snuggles, good food and exploring. My mom and I went without any set plans. We've both been to Atlanta a few times and have done most of the touristy stuff. We just wanted to go with the flow and spend time with family. My cousin had planned a few fun outings for us, but we also spent lots of time just relaxing at her house.

The highlight of the trip was actually something I don't have any photos of -- me leading a short yoga practice for my cousin, mom and aunt. I haven't laughed that hard in a long long time.

Here's a recap of my trip to Atlanta…

Weekend Recap {Oct. 28-30, 2016}

Posted October 31, 2016 in Weekend Recap, weekend, Omaha and 4 more

Happy Halloween!

The BF and I don't have any Halloween plans this year. He'll be working late, so I'll be at home giving out candy to the seven kids who stop by our house.

We had a much-needed weekend out of town. We've both still been feeling like the house is overwhelmingly empty since we put our dog, Coda, down a couple of weeks ago. So we decided to take a road trip for the weekend.

Happy Thanksgiving Week!

I love a short work week before a holiday. It's always more low key and there's anticipation and excitement for the upcoming celebration.

The BF and I had plans to go to Omaha to visit family, so we went a day early so I could buy a new car!! If you've been reading my Weekend Recaps for awhile, you know I've been to the Subaru dealership a bunch of times!

The fiancé and I ran our sixth Bolder Boulder 10K together on Memorial Day!

It's a tradition that we've kept alive since we started dating, and something we always look forward to doing together each year.

We actually considered skipping it this year because neither of us have been running much. We were worried that running a 10K might be a lot without proper training.

But we decided to just go for it, walk as much as we needed to, and have fun. Which is exactly what we did!

24-Hours in San Francisco

The fiancé and I recently returned from an epic trip to California to hike in Yosemite National Park.

We flew in and out of San Francisco, and while we didn't spend a lot of time there, we did spend enough time to explore the city a tiny bit.

We were in San Francisco for a little over 24 hours split between two days with Yosemite in the middle.

It was our first time in San Francisco, so we had a long list of things we wanted to do there. We didn't try to cram everything in because we didn't want the trip to feel too hectic.

We may have only seen a small part of the city, but we definitely fell in love with the hilly streets, colorful row houses, views of the Golden Gate Bridge and afternoon fog.

Here's a recap of our short trip to San Francisco...
