Grocery Haul + Meal Plan {Week of Feb. 9-15}

Posted February 12, 2015 in grocery haul, meal planning, healthy eating and 5 more

I haven't posted a grocery haul in a long time because I spent most of January on my elimination diet, and grocery shopping wasn't that fun. Most of my grocery hauls were produce, seeds, rice and rice milk (ick!).

But my elimination diet is over! (I'll post a recap soon) I'm back to eating like my old self (although I haven't reintroduced coffee and I've only had sugar for the first time this week. My sugar was in the form of Justin's Vanilla Almond Butter. To. Die. For.)

So I thought I would share my recent grocery haul and meal plan! I haven't kept track of our grocery spending for a few months. I got off track during the holidays. But I'll get back to it this month and share our grocery budget for February early in March.

How to make your own all-natural lip balm

Posted March 3, 2015 in beauty, beauty products, DIY and 5 more

Over the past year or so, I've been slowly making my skin care routine more and more natural. What exactly does that mean? Well, I'm getting rid of processed junk just like I did with my diet.

On an average day, I slather, rub or spray well over 20 products on my body! What?!?! True story.

Shampoo, conditioner, face wash, body wash, hair beautifier, styling cream, heat protecting spray, hair spray, eye cream, moisturizer with SPF, body lotion, foundation, concealer, powder, blush, eye shadow, eye liner, mascara, lip balm, deodorant, perfume, eye make up remover and night cream.

While cosmetic companies and the FDA say that the chemicals in beauty products are safe, there really haven't been long term studies on the effects of beauty products on the body. That's pretty scary considering the fact that your skin acts as a sponge, absorbing around 60 percent of the topical products you use!! (source)

"Almost 90 percent of the 10,500 cosmetics and skin care ingredients known to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration have not been evaluated for safety by the Cosmetic Ingredient Review, the FDA, or any other publicly accountable institution, according to the Environmental Working Group." (source)

Friday Faves {May 15, 2015}

Posted May 15, 2015 in Friday, Friday Faves, Modcloth and 4 more

This week has been crazy!

On Tuesday, the Outdoor Fitness Pad at Yanney Park was installed. I've already had people tell me that they've gone out to try the equipment! It makes me so happy.

Then Wednesday was Walk Out on Your Job, a community event that promotes walking during the work day. We had about 500 people gather to go on a 1.5 mile walk, then we provided them with a lunch. I've been working with the Activate Buffalo County planning committee for months to organize this event, so it was awesome to see it come together.

Wednesday was also my graduation from Leadership UNK, a leadership class at work. I've been going to classes since last August. I had to miss the graduation ceremony for Walk Out on Your Job, but it was exciting nonetheless.

Last night, I was rushing around my house doing dishes, doing laundry and cleaning up and I realized that I hadn't taken a moment to celebrate. So I poured myself a glass of champagne and topped it with raspberries, and took some time to be grateful for such a crazy awesome week.

I hope you've had an awesome week as well. Please share your successes with me in the comments below!

Here are some of my recent favorite things...

How to get whiter teeth and fresher breath naturally

This post makes me feel super hippie dippy, but stick with me! These are game-changing tips!

A little over a month ago, I experimented with making my own toothpaste (read about that wild weekend here). Many store-bought toothpastes are made with fluoride (which has been linked to health issues such as stomach problems, skin rashes, and it can discolor your teeth), artificial sweeteners, carrageenan (which promotes inflammation), sulfate and synthetic dyes. (source and source)

Over the past year, I've been on a mission to make my beauty and skincare routine more natural. When I realized how gross store-bought toothpaste was, I decided to figure out how to make my own with natural ingredients from my kitchen.

I ended up creating a charcoal toothpaste. Yep, charcoal!

My Current Favorite Affordable Natural Beauty Products

Posted April 13, 2017 in affordable natural beauty products, detox, real food detox and 3 more

There are thousands of chemicals in beauty products, many of which can be absorbed in the body. Luckily, there are many high quality and affordable natural beauty and skincare products.

I recently created a brand new workshop all about detoxing, and presented it at my favorite yoga studio - Avani Yoga Studio

It was really amazing to give a workshop there as a wellness expert because I've always really admired and looked up to the yoga teachers at Avani. It's where I fell in love with yoga and deepened my practice through yoga teacher training.

Because I believe that living a healthy, happy life is about so much more than food, I included information about detoxing your beauty routine in my workshop.

It reminded me just how far I've come with my skincare and beauty regimen. Over the past few years, I've transitioned to using (mostly) natural products. I've found a few products that I absolutely love and use all the time, but I'm always finding new products.

I love skincare products and makeup, and I love testing out new products. So I thought I would share some of my recent (more affordable) favorites.

How I Use Essential Oils Every Day

Posted July 7, 2017 in essential oils, Using essential oils daily, toxin free home and 5 more

When I first began my journey to live a healthier life, I focused only on food and fitness.

They were incredibly important stepping stones for me, but I soon realized that wellness was about so much more.

Going through health coaching school was when I first realized the importance of self-care, and how many toxins were in my beauty products. I incorporated a consistent self-care practice and slowly began replacing my old beauty and skincare products with natural products.

In the last year, I've focused on transitioning my household cleaning products from toxic brands to natural or homemade products.

This is the beauty of going on a journey to live a healthy're constantly learning new things!

I began using essential oils a few years ago, but I've really incorporated them into multiple aspects of my daily routine recently.

I love that essential oils have allowed me to reduce the toxins in my life and that they're a natural supplement to my health regimens.

As I was getting ready one morning, I realized that I hadn't shared much about how I use essential oils daily. So I thought I would give you a peek into my day!
