I admit, however, that green smoothies can sometimes turn out slightly….earthy. And there is nothing worse than have little bits of green leaves floating around in your smoothie. So there is a bit of an art to making the perfect green smoothie.

What I'm reading, wearing, watching, eating and listening to

Posted December 15, 2016 in green smoothie, plant protein, Cuddl Duds and 10 more

I wrote a post like this in January and fully intended to make it a monthly thing because I thought it was so fun.

Ummmm, that didn't happen. It's now December and I'm finally writing the second post in this series.

But I'm bringing it back this week because I need something fun and light amidst my annoyingly long to do list. So here we go!

Peppermint Mocha {with protein}

Peppermint-Mocha-with-Protein.png#asset:

It has been so cold lately that all I want to do is cuddle up under a blanket and drink something warm.

I don't normally go for sweet coffee drinks, but I was craving something warm and sweet one cold afternoon and this peppermint mocha happened.

Most coffee shop versions are high in calories, and are full of sugar and syrups made with artificial ingredients. But my recipe is full of good-for-you nutrition and doesn't contain any sugar.

Gingerbread-Energy-Balls.png#asset:7177:

These energy balls might just be my favorite yet!

I had a craving for gingerbread cookies, but I didn't want to go to all the work of finding a dairy-free gingerbread cookie recipe, making sure I had all of the ingredients and baking.

So I threw together these energy balls in about 10 minutes and I got to enjoy all the flavors of gingerbread cookies! These even contain good-for-you plant protein.

New Year's Recap

Happy New Year! I hope you enjoyed celebrating the end of 2016 and welcoming the new year.

My New Year's weekend was pretty low key, which was nice. We spent New Year's Eve with friends enjoying good food and champagne, and playing games. The rest of the weekend was slow moving and relaxing.

Here's a recap of my weekend...

What I Eat in a Day {Jan. 24, 2017}

Posted January 25, 2017 in dairy free cooking, What I Eat in a Day, dairy free and 5 more

What-I-Eat-in-a-Day.png#asset:7403:mediu

Ever wonder what a health coach eats throughout the day? Today I'm sharing every single thing that I ate yesterday!

Tuesdays are my longest days, so it's important that I eat for optimal energy. I teach fitness classes at 5:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. and work my 8 to 5 in between, so it's a long day that requires plenty of energy.

I'm usually pretty tired by the time I get home, which is why I try to keep dinner simple - leftovers or something easy to throw together.

I'm currently not eating dairy, and I usually only eat meat a couple times a week. Tuesday just happened to be a dairy-free, meat-free day (not vegan because I ate eggs).

I don't count calories or track my food. I simply focus on eating whole foods that will make me feel my best.

Here's a look at my entire day...

{Dairy-Free} Strawberry Milk

Posted February 15, 2017 in Strawberry Milk, Healthy Strawberry Milk, Dairy-Free Strawberry Milk and 2 more

Strawberry-Milk.png#asset:7504:medium

Remember those old school bottles of strawberry flavored milk?

When I was a kid, I never really thought about the fact that the flavored milk didn't even contain strawberries. So what's in strawberry flavored milk?

High fructose corn syrup, sugar, artificial flavors and artificial colors. Gross.

When the BF and I were at a donut shop a few weekends ago, he jokingly grabbed a bottle of strawberry milk out of the cooler. He didn't end up getting it, but I was inspired to create a healthy version of the old school flavored milk.

My Top 4 Foods for Daily Detox

Posted March 16, 2017 in daily detox, detoxifying foods, detox and 4 more

Adding detoxifying foods into your diet is super easy! These four detox foods can improve your digestion, reduce inflammation and provide your body with a lot of nourishment.

Top-4-Foods-for-daily-detox-1.png#asset:

I've been on a journey to balance my hormones to eliminate hormonal headaches and migraines, improve my energy and lose some extra weight my body has been holding onto.

Working closely with my functional medicine doctor, I've made some dietary changes (eliminating dairy) and some lifestyle changes (getting off birth control and adding supplements to my daily routine). My hormonal migraines have been completely eliminated and my energy has increased so much.

I recently had my six-month appointment to go over my blood work results, and I learned that my estrogen levels are still high (which is causing some PMS symptoms) and my liver enzymes are high. So I've been increasing the amount of detoxifying foods in my diet to assist my liver in its cleansing process.

While I've added more detoxifying foods into my diet for a very specific reason, everyone can benefit from increasing the amount of cleansing foods in their daily diet.

My niece actually gave me the idea to make energy balls that taste like birthday cake. I knew it was something I had to do on my birthday this year since I've been obsessed with making energy balls over the past year.

Health Coach Eats {What I Eat in a Day - May 9, 2017}

Posted May 10, 2017 in What I Eat in a Day, Health Coach Eats, vegetarian cooking and 4 more

What's a typical day of eats look like for a health coach? I'm giving you a special look at all of my real life meals!

What-I-Eat-in-a-Day.png#asset:7403:mediu

One of the questions I get asked the most is what I eat on a day-to-day basis or what diet I prescribe to.

If you've been hanging out here at Sweet Success for awhile, then you probably know that I don't diet. I don't follow a diet and I don't think diets work for the long term.

I eat based on what I feel my body needs in the moment. How exactly does that work?

When I'm in the kitchen eyeing the tortilla chips and guacamole (happens frequently), I take a moment to think about how that will serve me, why I'm craving it, and whether I actually need something more nourishing. Sometimes I go for the chips and guac, and other times I make something that will make me feel more satisfied.

It took me awhile to learn how to eat intuitively, and I'm not perfect. But I like the freedom of eating without counting calories or macronutrients, and it allows me to pay attention to what my body needs from day to day.

I'm typically all about the smoothie, but I changed things up this week and made a smoothie bowl!

I'm a fan of of the smoothie bowl because it resembles ice cream, it takes a little longer to eat than a smoothie, and it's the perfect warm weather snack.

Weekend Recap {June 16-18, 2017} - Crab Boil

Posted June 19, 2017 in Weekend Recap, yoga, green smoothie and 6 more

Welcome to a new week!

I'm so excited for this week because the fiancé and I are leaving for a hiking adventure trip to Yosemite National Park!

I, of course, have a bazillion things to do in the next few days (I overcommitted), but I'm really looking forward to the break.

Over the weekend, I taught three yoga classes, did some work, cleaned the house, ran errands to pick up last minute items for our trip and hung out with friends at a crab boil. It was mostly work with a little bit of fun and relaxation thrown in...

Weekend Recap {July 7-9, 2017}

Posted July 10, 2017 in Weekend Recap, yoga, meal planning and 6 more

Another summer weekend has come and gone. After having two long weekends, it was sad to have a regular old two day weekend.

However, I'm home from work today.

I'm not sure if everything is just a coincidence and unrelated or if everything is connected, but I have a cluster of painful and itchy bug bites on my neck, I have an intense pain from my jaw to my shoulder, I have a terrible headache and my throat is sore.

It all started last Wednesday, so after six days of being in pain I'm exhausted. I also started to go down a spiral worrying about having a bacterial infection, meningitis or some other awful illness.

Luckily, I don't have anything on my schedule today. So I'm currently watching Dawson's Creek from the beginning (I haven't watched it since high school!) and I'm staying in my pajamas all day.

I wasn't feeling well all weekend, so I spent a fair amount of time relaxing. But I also pushed through my pain for a date night and a trip to the lake for some beach time.

Beach days are the best days! Here's what I pack in my beach bag to stay healthy and happy!

Let's be clear, when I say beach, I mean the swimming beach at a lake. I'm from Nebraska, and there are no oceans nearby, so we're stuck with heading to nearby lakes to get our beach fix.

My parents have always had a pool in their backyard, so that's usually my go to swimming destination in the summer. But my parents recently moved, and they don't have a pool yet.

So the fiancé and I have been exploring the swimming beaches at lakes near our town.

It's been fun to go on mini adventures on the weekends to check out new places, soak up the sun and relax in the water.
