My thoughts on tomorrow’s half-marathon + tips on long distance running

Posted May 3, 2014 in running, excercise, lincoln marathon and 2 more

The Lincoln Half-Marathon is tomorrow!

I can’t believe it’s already here. I’m excited and nervous just like I have been with every race I’ve done. This will be my seventh half-marathon! It still feels weird for me to write that. It feels like I’m talking about someone else.

I’m definitely not a natural athlete, and running is still hard for me. Most training runs are challenging, and I have to dig deep for some inner strength to get me through them. But that is what I love about running.

The first time I crossed the finish line of a half-marathon, I thought, ‘If I can do this, I can do anything.’ There’s something powerful about pushing your body past physical pain and having mental strength take over.

My training for this half-marathon has been less than stellar. For most of the training, I was teaching five fitness classes a week. Getting in my short weekday training runs was hard. I got in all of my long weekend training runs, but those short runs are just as important.

My goal for the year was to run a half-marathon in 2 hours. It’s not going to happen tomorrow. Without enough short runs and with a lot of slow weekend runs, I know it’s not possible. So I’m just going to listen to my body, run at a pace that feels good, and enjoy the race. Last year, I ran the race in 2:19:53 and the year before it was 2:09:47 (my PR). So I’m hoping I’ll finish in between those two times.

Although my training hasn’t been super awesome, I do feel like my nutrition has been on point. I really focused on eating healthy carbs to fuel my runs and recovering with healthy whole foods. I didn’t rely on bars or Gatorade like I have in year’s past. I drank coconut water to rehydrate, I made protein smoothies to recover after runs and I drank tart cherry juice to help prevent muscle soreness, just to name a few things I did differently.

As I’ve been training, I’ve been reading the book “Eat and Run” by Scott Jurek. He’s one of the most dominant ultrarunners in the world and has won some of the world’s most prestigious 100+ mile races. Although 13.1 miles is not even comparable to an ultra, I have taken away some helpful tips from his book.

  • Nutrition is key. Jurek is a vegan! Most runners rely on animal protein, protein bars, energy bars, protein drinks, etc. to fuel and recover from runs. But Jurek sticks to a vegan whole foods diet. During long runs he eats potatoes, bananas, bean burritos, etc. He also doesn’t take pain-relievers and uses anti-inflammatory foods to help cure his ailments. While I don’t plan to become vegan, I like his food philosophy.
  • Stay in the present. Thinking about how far you have to go can make the run seem daunting. “I try to do so by breaking races up into small digestible parts. Sometimes I focused on the next aid station, three miles ahead. Sometimes I pictured the next shady spot down the road, or the next step.”
  • Long distance running is mostly mental. “That’s one of the great pleasures of an ultramarathon. You can hurt more than you ever thought possible, then continue until you discover that hurting isn’t that big of deal.”
  • Let go of negative thoughts. Having negatives thoughts about how much your body hurts or how much the race sucks, can bring you down. The more you focus on those negative thoughts, the more likely you’ll be to talk yourself into quitting. “Don’t dwell on feelings that aren’t going to help.” I like to have a positive mantra when running. During lots of my training runs this year I keep saying, “This will make you stronger” to myself.

Good luck to you if you’re running the Lincoln Half-Marathon or Marathon or another race this weekend!

Week of Workouts {May 17-23}

Posted May 24, 2014 in workouts, fitness, workout and 6 more

Yesterday, I wrote about how I've been in a funk for part of the week and that I didn't feel like working out. But then I typed out my workouts for the week, and realized that I was probably being hard on myself. I did workout every day this week. My workouts may not have been super intense, but I did something every day.

I'm still following the Tone It Up Bikini Series (I attached links to all those workouts), but I've been slacking on my FitFluential Namaste in May yoga workouts. I only got in two yoga workouts this week (my goal was to do yoga every day in May). I did pretty well the first two and a half weeks of the month.

I also missed a day or two on my Sweet Success May Plank Challenge workouts. I feel like I'm doing too many fitness challenges right now! How are you doing with your planks?

Week of Workouts {May 24-30}

Posted May 31, 2014 in workout, workouts, fitness and 5 more

This week was, apparently, all cardio all the time. I only got in one toning session this week (although Insanity incorporates some toning). I really didn't feel like working out after the BF and I got back from Colorado. Maybe it was the post-travel exhaustion, or feeling low about having to get back to the real world (ie. rental house hunting).

I also totally slacked on my FitFluential Namaste in May Challenge. I didn't get in one yoga session! I need to get back to it.

I am definitely hard on myself when I have a week like this. But I need to look at the positives of my week - I ran a race, I worked out 6 days, I went to an intense fitness class, and I got up early one day and went running!

High Intensity Bleacher Workout {no equipment needed}

Posted June 3, 2014 in workout, summer, fitness and 6 more

About a month ago, my friend Russanne suggested that we start getting together on Sunday mornings during the summer to do workouts at the high school track.

I was thrilled about the idea because I don't usually do intense workouts on the weekends (unless I'm half-marathon training), and I tend to find myself glued to the sofa being lazy on Sundays. I thought this was a great way to get motivated to workout, and I thought it would be fun! Working out with a buddy is always more fun!

Week of Workouts {May 31 - June 6}

Posted June 7, 2014 in workout, fitness, exercise and 6 more

After my workout-filled weekend, I spent the week without a lot of energy. It may have been the weather. It was pretty hot most days this week. That tends to suck my energy until I get used to the summer heat.

But I still managed to get in three toning workouts, a yoga workout and my usual cardio.

I set my alarm every day this week to get up early and go running before it got hot outside. Every single day I hit snooze and didn't get up until I had to get ready for work. I'm going to keep trying! I'm determined to start a morning workout routine!

How do you motivate yourself to get up early?

Weekend Recap {July 18-20} - Triple Breakfast + Moving

Posted July 21, 2014 in weekend, healthy, Weekend Recap and 11 more

Sorry my posts have been a bit unpredictable lately! Since the BF and I just moved into our new house last weekend, we don't have our internet hooked up yet! Yes, a whole week without internet. It's torture. Charter was supposed to hook it up Monday, but they didn't show up.

The weekend was filled with more moving! Last weekend, the BF and I started the process of moving in together! Neither of us have to be out of our old houses by any particular date, so we have been slowly moving our stuff into our new house.

But I managed to fit in some workouts, a bit of fun (and A LOT of breakfast) into our busy moving schedule...

Week of Workouts {July 26 - Aug. 1}

Posted August 2, 2014 in workout, Week of Workouts, fitness and 8 more

Although this week wasn't much better than last week, I did manage to squeeze in a couple of my own workouts outside of the fitness classes I teach.

My struggle is still getting up in the morning before work to workout. Since I teach all of my classes in the evenings, the morning is the only time I have to exercise. And when my alarm goes off at 5:30 a.m. every morning, can you guess what I do? Snooze. Snooze. Snooze. Off.

I don't want to discredit the workouts I get when I teach. I work hard in my classes, especially Piloxing. I leave that class dripping in sweat. But I definitely need to add in some of my own strength training, cardio and yoga.

I had a heart to heart with the BF and told him I needed a bit of motivation. I convinced him to join the August Fresh Air Fitness Challenge through FitFluential with me. We will workout outside for at least 30 minutes every day this month! I'm excited to to get out of my comfort zone a bit with my workouts.

Our Aug. 1 workout was just a 30 minute run, but it felt pretty brutal. Since it got hot, I haven't been running a whole lot. So this challenge will be good for me.

But we got back to work cleaning the BF's old house on Sunday. Moving is hard work! I feel like I need a vacation from moving!

I promise that my Weekend Recaps will be a little more exciting as soon as we finish all this moving stuff!

How many times have you returned home from vacation and felt like your pants were more snug than when you left? Almost every time right? Eating out constantly, indulging in more treats and booze than usual and getting away from your usual workout routine are all culprits.

But I totally believe you can go on vacation, have fun, indulge and come home feeling the same way you did when you left home!

Week of Workouts {Aug. 23-29}

I only taught ONE fitness class this week! You read that right, one.

My 6-week Piloxing session through Park and Rec ended last week (the next one starts Sept. 8!), and the pool at my gym is closed for maintenance so I didn't have to teach water aerobics all week. All I taught was a morning cycling class.

It felt great to come home every day after work and not have to rush to go teach a class. I was starting to feel a bit burned out from all my classes, so the break was needed. This week, I focused mostly on getting my 30 minutes of outdoor activity for the FitFluential August Fresh Air Challenge. It was great to be outside!

Here's what I did this week...

I took it easy this week because I thought I would start teaching my next six weeks of Piloxing through Park and Rec Monday, and I'd be going back to teaching five classes a week. But I found out Friday that I didn't have enough registrations and the class was cancelled!

I'm bummed, but I also think everything happens for a reason.

The FitFluential August Fresh Air Challenge ended Sunday. I loved that challenge! I went outside to workout nearly every day in August! (I missed the last two days).

Week of Workouts {Sept. 6-12}

Posted September 13, 2014 in workout, Week of Workouts, yoga and 5 more

I had a great week of workouts this week!

I switched things up a bit. I went to the gym and did the stair climber. That thing is no joke! I was ready to get off the thing after 10 minutes, but I pushed myself to keep going until I hit 20 minutes. I was dripping in sweat!

I also tried out a new fitness studio - K-Town Shakedown. I took a yoga class there, but they also offer Zumba, cycling, toning and other classes.

Remember last week, when I said I was bummed because my Piloxing class through Park and Rec got cancelled, but I believed it happened for a reason. Well, Elaine, the owner of K-Town Shakedown asked if I would like to teach Piloxing classes there! I'm going to teach a preview class Wednesday, Sept. 17 at 5:30 p.m., and then I'll be on the regular October schedule. I'm super excited about this opportunity! And the fitness studio is donation based to make fitness accessible to anyone. I love that concept. Fitness classes are how I got into shape, and I want everyone to have the opportunity to take fitness classes and be fit and feel fabulous!

So trying out a new fitness studio turned into a job opportunity!

Anyway, here are my workouts from the past week.

I'm going to do a full post on my yoga handstand workshop, but I'll tell you now that it was an awesome experience.

I've been slacking on getting in additional strength workouts - something I need to do. But I was feeling a bit sluggish this week, which made doing workouts in addition to my classes a struggle. Luckily, I get good workouts teaching my classes!

October Goals

Posted October 7, 2014 in October, goals, motivation and 12 more

I'm a chronic goal setter. I set daily, weekly, monthly, yearly and even life goals.

I feel like I function better when I'm working towards something. It makes me more productive, and there's nothing better than that feeling of accomplishing a goal!

But lately, I've been making my usual goal lists and then...nothing. The day or week will come and go and my list remains with no checks next to my goals.

Then I read a post about goals written by a blogger I met at FitBloggin. Brooke Not on a Diet creates daily, weekly and monthly goals each month and decides on a reward if she meets her goals. I totally love this idea, and I know it will help motivate me to get going on my goals!

Novemeber Goals

Last month, I set some goals for the month - something new I'm trying to help me reach my larger overall goals for fall

I got the idea from a blogger I met at FitBloggin. Brooke Not on a Diet creates daily, weekly and monthly goals each month and decides on a reward if she meets her goals. I totally love this idea because I often set lots of goals, get motivated, then lose steam and don't accomplish my goals.

I did OK, last month. See what I accomplished in October here.

I realized that I need to come up with a better reward. My reward was a Fabletics outfit, something that I would buy for myself even if I didn't earn it. So for this month, I came up with something that I normally wouldn't do for myself.

Week of Workouts {Nov. 8-14}

Posted November 15, 2014 in Week of Workouts, workouts, yoga and 9 more

I had another week FULL of teaching fitness classes. Between Saturday and Friday, I taught 10 classes!!

I subbed five classes this week at the Wellness Center. I have some financial goals, so I'm picking up classes whenever I can to make extra money : )

My week was pretty crazy. After I taught class every evening, I had phone meetings for my Institute for Integrative Nutrition classes. So I wasn't eating dinner until nearly 8:30 p.m. I just felt like I didn't have any down time. I was feeling pretty overwhelmed by my busy schedule. Then, on Friday, I was reading my emails, and I saw the perfect quote from BexLife...

'"Busy" is an opinion. I'd rather use "full" and "abundant" and "always open to new experiences" to describe my life.'

That's such a great way to think about a busy life in a more positive way!

Friday morning, I did a hip opening yoga sequence and it was much needed! I've been having some hip pain for the past few weeks and, I'm guessing, it's because I've been working out so much! It's time for some self-care!

I also took lots of workout selfies this week!

I had a great week of working out. I took three yoga classes, and tried two new fitness classes - hot yoga and PiYo!

I have a full blog post about my hot yoga experience coming up next week!

PiYo was great! The class doesn't usually fit into my schedule, but the pool was closed at the CHI Wellness Center and my water aerobics class was cancelled. It was nice to change things up. I liked that it was fast-paced, and all the squats and lunges made me feel like I was getting lots of strength work. I dragged the BF with me, and it wasn't his fave (see photo below), but it makes me happy that he's always willing to try a new class.

This week was Thanksgiving and I got in two workouts! I took a morning yoga class at the CHI Wellness Center and the BF and I went for a run. It was cold (22 degrees with an 8 degree wind chill), so I got really bundled up. I love starting holidays with a good workout!

Week of Workouts {Nov. 29 - Dec. 5}

Posted December 6, 2014 in Week of Workouts, workout, fitness and 7 more

I had another week of headaches and migraines (starting Monday), so my workouts were pretty minimal. I taught my usual classes, and didn't do anything else. My headaches were pretty crazy this week.

I was in so much pain Thursday night that I couldn't sleep, and got up Friday morning feeling exhausted and still in pain. I ended up staying home from work to try to get my headache under control. Being at work makes it so much harder because I look at a computer screen all day under florescent lighting. I spent most of Friday laying in the same place on the couch. I started to feel better in the afternoon so I did some yoga for headaches and a meditation for pain.

I've mentioned this before, but my headaches are hormonal. I had them under control for about 6 months, then they came back a few months ago. I basically have anywhere from a dull headache to a migraine for 5 days straight. It's exhausting physically and emotionally. I have an appointment with my doctor in January!

Also, one of my December goals is to do yoga every day. I didn't include all of my yoga sessions in my recap because most days this week I did a short (10 min.) practice on my own without a video.

Must Have Half-Marathon Training Gadgets and Gear

Posted March 10, 2015 in half-marathon, running, run and 6 more

I'm currently training for the Lincoln Half-Marathon, which is May 3 (two days after my 32nd birthday!)!!

This will be my eighth half-marathon! What?!?! It's hard for me to believe I've run 13.1 miles eigth times. Just seven years ago, I couldn't run a mile without stopping to walk.

I definitely don't consider myself to be a natural runner. Running is never easy for me. But I love being outside and running. It helps me clear my head, think about life and enjoy the outdoors. I also feel so accomplished and strong after a run.

When I first started running, I didn't have all the gear. I wore a pair of cheap running shoes, black workout pants and a sweatshirt to train for my first half-marathon. But I've collected running clothes, gear and gadgets that I now feel I can't run without. Sometimes having the stuff just makes your runs a little bit easier!

Week of Workouts {March 7-13}

Posted March 14, 2015 in Week of Workouts, workout, fitness and 8 more

Wow, it's been a looooong week. The weather here in Nebraska as been ah-mazing (in the upper 60's, mid-70's all week). I am so ready for spring!

But while it's been beautiful outside, the temperature in my office has been hovering between 81-86 degrees. Ugh!!

I've had my fan blowing directly on me! As you can see, I wasn't thrilled.

It has been really awful, and has made working incredibly challenging. By mid-afternoon I just felt so lethargic and uncomfortable. Feeling hot all day made after-work workouts feel super challenging. My early morning workouts even felt difficult just because the heat sucked my energy.

But it's the weekend, and I can now be in my comfortable home or outside enjoying the wonderful weather.

It's been FOREVER since I shared a week of workouts with you! I've been holding off because for a long time, I was just teaching fitness classes. I've been struggling with fitting in my own workouts with teaching fitness classes (which I've probably mentioned a few dozen times ; )

I'm finally doing some of my own workouts! I admit however, that I don't have a perfect balance. Sometimes I feel like I'm doing way too much. I definitely don't recommend all the two-a-day (or even three-a-day) workouts I've been doing.

I'm worried about overtraining, so I'm working on dialing it down in the classes that I teach. I teach all active classes (meaning I do the workout with my class), but I've been trying to instruct more than do lately. This allows me to have more energy for my own workouts and not overtrain my muscles (hopefully).

It was an incredibly hard decision, but I cut one of my fitness classes from my schedule. I've been struggling to fit in my weekday half-marathon training runs, so I cut my Thursday evening deep water aerobics class to give me time for running.

One of my goals is to incorporate more strength training into my routine (since I do sooooo much cardio), so I've also been working on that.

Here are my workouts from the past week:

My weekend was filled with catching up with family and friends. My niece celebrated her 9th birthday, my relatives from Omaha came to visit and the BF and I spent time with friends we hadn't seen in awhile.

I didn't get much of my to do list done this weekend, but I did get the most important thing done - my 8 mile half-marathon training run!

The BF and I also ended up eating out a lot this weekend because we were running around a bunch.

What's New and Good

I've been a terrible blogger this week!

I usually prepare a bunch of blogs for the week over the weekend. But last weekend was crazy busy, so I didn't get anything done. Which is why my blogs have been a bit sporadic this week (I don't always have the time or energy to blog on weeknights). But I thought I would check in with you just so you know I'm still alive.

I'm going to be honest, I've been feeling a bit overwhelmed and exhausted. So I need to take a moment to think about the things in my life that are fun and awesome.

Here are some things that are new and good right now...

Week of Workouts {March 14-20}

Posted March 21, 2015 in Week of Workouts, workout, BodyPump and 7 more

Happy Spring!

I'm beyond thrilled that spring is finally here. I love the beginning of a new season, especially spring. Spring, to me, is all about renewal. It's a good time to think about your goals and dreams, and recommit to your plan of action.

In addition to renewing my energy to work toward my goals, I also like to give myself a little renewal. Toward the end of winter, there were days that I wore black top to bottom. It's time to brighten things up! I'm excited to get out my spring and summer clothes, get a bright pedicure and change up my makeup. I'm ready to get out of this winter rut!

Last night after work, I totally wanted to come home put on my comfy clothes and lounge on the couch. But at the last minute, the BF and I decided to go out. As soon as I put on my purple maxi dress, put my hair up and refreshed my makeup, I felt so much better! A good start to getting out of my winter funk.

How do you change things up when spring arrives?

How was your weekend?

My weekend was very low key, which I needed. The BF and I went out with friends on Friday night, I did yoga, I created a couple of new recipes to share with you, I went for a run, I tried farro for the first time and I watched some movies.

Week of Workouts [March 21-27}

Posted March 28, 2015 in Week of Workouts, workouts, fitness and 7 more

This week was a bit rough!

My half-marathon schedule had me go back in miles for my weekend run, so the BF and I did a short 3 mile run last weekend. It was a nice break from the long runs we've been doing.

I ended up sleeping in every morning and skipping BodyPump all week! My body was feeling really sore and tight, so I felt like my body needed a break. I was also feeling extremely tired this week. So I just listened to my body and gave myself a break.

I didn't get in all of my weekday half-marathon training runs because I'm still struggling to run on days I teach classes (I'll do a half-marathon training recap soon!).

The best methods for recovering from long runs

Posted March 31, 2015 in running, half-marathon, half-marathon training and 6 more

How-to-recover-from-long-runs.png#asset:

I'm going to be real, training for the Lincoln Half-Marathon this year has been rough. This will be the seventh time I've run Lincoln and my ninth half-marathon. Unfortunately, running doesn't get easier for me.

I've been getting down on myself because my runs have been slow, my hamstrings have been chronically tight and I haven't had a whole lot of energy during my runs. I think back to two years ago, when I felt really awesome running, and I feel like I'm failing.

I know the reason I've been struggling is because of the fitness classes I'm teaching. I'm teaching four cardio classes a week, and I'm struggling to get in my weekday runs and incorporate strength training into my routine.

Healthy Easter baskets for kids, runners and health nuts

Posted April 2, 2015 in Easter, holidays, healthy living and 4 more

I hope you have fun Easter plans with your family and/or friends! The BF and I will be going to his grandma's house for Easter dinner.

I already bought the Easter candy I plan to indulge in! I got a Cadbury Egg and a Russel Stover Wedding Cake Egg. The BF and I will be running 10 miles on Saturday, so I'll have my candy as a little post-run treat. I don't eat candy all that often, but I don't mind indulging during the holidays.

Do you still make Easter baskets? I think it's fun to put together cute little baskets for my niece and for the BF. But all the Easter candy can be too much! (Especially since my niece will more than likely get an Easter basket from the Easter bunny, my parents, her other grandparents and me!). So I came up with a list of healthier options!

Since the BF already bought his own Easter candy, and we're training for a half-marathon, my Easter basket ideas for runners are perfect for him!

I also came up with a list of random gift ideas for your super healthy friends and family members!

Week of Workouts {March 28 - April 3}

Posted April 4, 2015 in Week of Workouts, workout, fitness and 5 more

Happy Saturday!

Last weekend when I shared my Week of Workouts, I mentioned that I was feeling a bit run down. For most of March I was going to BodyPump twice a week, and last week I just kind of hit a wall. My body felt tired and tight.

I reevaluated my workout routine and decided to stop going to BodyPump for the rest of my half-marathon training. I'm going to focus on running and yoga only!!

I also got subs to teach a few of my fitness classes in the weeks leading up to the half-marathon.

I'm really focusing on listening to my body, and my body is telling me to do less. I need to add more short runs in during the week, but I'm going to cut back on the extra workouts like BodyPump. I'll also be using my own tips from my post on recovering from long runs.

I hope you're enjoying your weekend. I've had a busy, but fun one so far.

I wanted to check in for a moment and share my workouts from the past week. Last week, I mentioned that I was trying to listen to my body more, cut down on fitness classes and focus on running and yoga.

Well, I got in three of my four half-marathon training runs last week! That's an improvement for me. But I slept in every single morning and didn't get in much yoga practice. I must have needed the extra sleep because I slept soundly and long last week.

Happy Weekend!

How were your workouts this week?

I got in three of the four of my half-marathon training runs (and two of them were good runs!). And I added in a bit of strength training!

As I mentioned in yesterday's Friday Faves post, I started doing the Tone It Up Bikini Series workouts this week. I've been loving these workouts because I can do them at home and they are pretty quick. I also feel like they're effective - I felt a bit sore the day after I did The Mermaid Workout and the Beach Ball Workout.

I feel like this week was a vast improvement from the past few weeks. The only thing I would like to work on is getting up before work to get my workouts in! I hit snooze every single morning! I also didn't do yoga this week! I slept in and missed Wednesday's 5:30 a.m. class at my gym and didn't do any at-home practice.

So next week, get up early and do yoga!

Week of Workouts {April 18-24, 2015}

Posted April 25, 2015 in Week of Workouts, fitness, workout and 6 more

The Lincoln Half-Marathon is just eight days away!!

I was able to get three out of four training runs in. Seems to be all I can make work. I even took some time off from teaching fitness classes this week! I only taught two classes. The break was much needed and I didn't feel nearly as sore during my runs this week.

However, Thursday's five-miler wasn't pretty. I felt decent the first half of the run, but the last half of the run was into the wind. Running against the wind takes so much out of me physically and mentally. I wanted to give up, I wanted to quit running altogether and I felt weak. When the run was over, I felt angry, frustrated and annoyed. Usually, I have a pretty decent runner's high going on after a run. It took me awhile to get out of my funk, but I finally realized that not giving up was a huge accomplishment.

Lesson: Celebrate your accomplishments, even if it sucked getting there!

I've been doing lots of Tone It Up workouts this week, and I'm feeling really good! I absolutely love these workouts because I can do them at home, and they are pretty quick. I'm also getting in some strength training, which is a challenge for me.

Here are my workouts from the past week...

Running Mantras To Get You Through Your Next Run

Posted April 30, 2015 in running, half-marathon, half-marathon training and 6 more

Since my next half-marathon is just a few days away, I wanted to share some running mantras that help get me through my runs.

Long distance running requires more mental strength than physical strength. That's actually why I love running half-marathons. In my daily life or in my regular workouts, I don't have to dig down to find that deep inner strength.

Running has been the only thing that has ever pushed me to have to talk myself into continuing when I feel like my body is giving up. You have to use your mental strength to push through physical barriers.

It's a pretty amazing thing.

So what do I tell myself when my hamstrings are burning, my knees are aching and my feet don't feel like they can take another step?

Here are my favorite running mantras...

Happy Birthday To Me!

Posted May 1, 2015 in birthday, memories, accomplishments and 8 more

Today is my 32nd birthday! (That is what I look like today…on my 32nd birthday! ; )

I absolutely love birthdays. I thoroughly enjoy having a day (or a week…or a month) that is all about me. Truth: I've been celebrating a birthday week! I have discovered that so many people don't like their birthdays or don't think birthdays are that big of deal!! I think it's because people rely on others to make the day special. I am a believer in making the day what you want it to be!

I always plan out exactly how I want to celebrate my day. I think about the things that make me truly happy and I think about ways to treat myself, and I make it happen! My birthdays almost always involve taking the day or part of the day off of work, getting a massage, indulging in some delicious sweet treat and spending time with the BF and my family. My favorite things!

My birthday week began on Monday with Ben & Jerry's The Tonight Dough (amazing!). Tuesday was Wild from the Redbox (we never watch movies during weekdays!). Wednesday was a spa night. Thursday I treated myself to a new pair of yoga leggings. These Reebok pineapple capris. And today is my birthday, which will be full of special treats.

Birthdays, to me, are also the perfect time to reflect on the past year. I'm constantly distracted by my to do lists and future plans, that I don't always take time to appreciate what I've accomplished.

(The BF and I camping in Colorado in 2013. One of my fave memories)

One thing that I've realized in the past year is that life is about relationships and experiences. I've spent way too much time wishing I was skinnier or prettier or had certain material items. But my happiest moments aren't times that I felt thin or pretty or when I bought something I wanted. My happiest moments are those spent with the people I care about or experiencing something new or exciting.

One of my goals in my 32nd year is to shop less. I really love shopping, and I often use shopping as a way to treat myself or make myself feel better when I'm feeling down. But things don't improve the quality of my life.

New fave quote: "One of the best things in life is realizing you're perfectly happy without the things you thought you needed most."

I also want to be more present. I'm definitely someone who is always thinking about the future, thinking about my to do list, my schedule and accomplishing my goals. I have a hard time enjoying the present because I feel like I need to be going, going, going.

Lincoln Half-Marathon 2015 Recap

Posted May 5, 2015 in Lincoln Half-Marathon, running, run and 7 more

I can't believe the Lincoln Half-Marathon is already over! I spent 12 weeks training, and in one morning it's done.

As I mentioned in my training recaps (here and here), I suffered from some chronic hamstring pain throughout training. This was due to teaching 4-5 cardio fitness classes a week on top of training for the race. In the two weeks leading up to the race, I only taught 1-2 classes a week in hopes that my hamstrings would recover and my legs would feel fresh for the race.

Unfortunately, my hams were hurting within minutes of beginning the race.

The BF had a little hitch in his run also because he was battling a chest cold the entire week before the race. The morning of the race his coughing sounded pretty rough.

We decided to take the race slow, not worry about our time, and just get through it.

Here are more details about what we ate before, during and after the race, and how we did during the race...

Week of Workouts {May 2-8, 2015}

Posted May 9, 2015 in Week of Workouts, workout, fitness and 6 more

I can't believe it's been almost a week since the BF and I ran our half-marathon! It actually feels like it was forever ago.

I felt pretty sore the day after the race. My hamstrings, glutes, back, the bottoms of my feet and my knees hurt. My mom asked if I wanted to go to a Zumba class with her Monday night. I was excited because she had never been to Zumba before, and I thought it would be a good way to shake out my muscles a bit.

It was a lot of fun! I haven't been to a Zumba class in years. Zumba doesn't feel like a workout, and the time flies.

On Wednesday, I decided to try a strength training workout. It felt super hard, and when I was done I laid on the couch for about an hour. I probably could have used a full day of rest or some foam rolling.

My muscles were feeling better Thursday, so I decided to try a HIIT workout. I felt really sore on Friday, so I decided to take a full day of rest.

I probably didn't recover as well as I could have. I really need to do some foam rolling and yoga. My hamstrings are still sore, the bottoms of my feet still hurt and my knees are still a bit achy.

Here are my workouts from the past week...

Happy weekend!

The BF and I took a little over a week off of running after the Lincoln Half-Marathon, and now we're back to training! We're running the Yellowstone Half-Marathon in just five weeks!

I'm teaching fewer fitness classes this time around to try to relieve my chronic hamstring pain. I'm also going to listen to my body more!

I admit, I don't always listen to my body when it comes to working out. I push myself hard during workouts and I push through aches and pains to teach fitness classes.

But running the Lincoln Half-Marathon with so much pain in my hamstring made me realize that I need to get it together.

I didn't do all of my training runs this week, but I did listen to my body and do what felt right.

Happy Memorial Day Weekend! I hope you have fun plans!

The BF and I will be in Colorado for Bolder Boulder. Running the 10K is a tradition for us every Memorial Day.

The past week as been weird. I wasn't feeling well Wednesday and Thursday. When I was running on the treadmill Wednesday I had cold sweats, weak muscles and fatigue. I thought I was just having a bad run, so I went to a Pound class. Unfortunately, I still felt pretty crappy during the class.

Side note: I didn't love Pound It was so loud and jarring, and it was hard to keep up while maintaining good form. However, we did do lots of lunges and squats, and I could definitely feel them the next day. Have you ever taken a Pound class? Should I give it another try?

My throat was sore all day Thursday, so I made myself an immunity boosting tonic - orange juice, apple cider vinegar, turmeric, honey and ginger - in hopes that it would rid my body of whatever illness was lurking.

I felt a bit better on Friday, but I had another ailment. My ankle! It was so sore, it hurt to walk. After work, I iced and elevated it.

This morning, the BF and I were supposed to go for a 9 mile run for our half-marathon training, but my foot was still in a lot of pain. After searching my symptoms on WebMD and realizing I could have a stress fracture, I decided to go to the doctor. The verdict...I have plantar fasciitis and tendinitis. My doctor prescribed heat for 30 minutes twice a day, using a cortizone cream and wearing arch support ALL the time. I can't be barefoot, wear flip flops, ballet flats.

I'm actually so grateful that I don't have a stress fracture. My doctor said I can still run and teach fitness classes!!!

Since it was such a weird week, I gave my body a bit of a rest.

We've run this race together four times, and I think this was my favorite. We really took our time, enjoyed the people watching, the bands, the activities (Slip n' Slide), and we stopped to take lots of photos.

We had decided to take it slow this year because I have plantar fasciitis and tendinitis (read more about it here). We thought we would end up walking a lot because of my foot injury. But we ended up running slowly, walking at the water stations and stopped for activities and selfies.

Yellowstone Half-Marathon Recap

Posted June 23, 2015 in half-marathon, Yellowstone, travel and 7 more

The Yellowstone Half-Marathon…where do I begin???

When I signed up for the race in February, I was in the midst of training for May's Lincoln Half-Marathon. I thought registering for a half-marathon a month and a half after Lincoln would keep me motivated to continue running. Sometimes after Lincoln I take an extended break from running and lose my running fitness.

The BF and I were also already planning a trip to Yellowstone. We were planning on leaving June 13, the day of the race. We decided to register for the race, and head to Yellowstone a day early.

However, after the Lincoln Half-Marathon I developed plantar fasciitis and had to put training for Yellowstone on hold. I only did one long run and a handful of shorter runs between Lincoln and Yellowstone. I also never practiced trail running like I had planned.

I was super anxious about Yellowstone because I wasn't in the shape I wanted to be in for a half-marathon and I was worried about my foot. But I was already registered and driving over 800 miles to get to Yellowstone, so I felt like I had to run the race.

Week of Workouts {Nov. 9-15, 2015}

Posted November 16, 2015 in workout, fitness, healthy living and 8 more

Happy Sunday! I hope you've had a relaxing and rejuvinating weekend.

I'm bringing back my Week of Workouts posts! I'll be sharing my workouts from the past week each Sunday. I took a long break from this series because my workouts were starting to look the same every week. But I'm changing things up as part of the Holiday Sweat Challenge.

My goal for the week was to get in 420 minutes of exercise and do yoga every day. Yoga every day didn't happen, but I'm going to try again this coming week! I was also a bit short on my workout minutes...I got in 315 minutes of exercise. I need to get better at working out on the weekends.

My biggest accomplishment this week was going for a run! I took a long break from running after the Yellowstone Half-Marathon. That race really shattered my self-confidence, and I just haven't felt like running. But I decided to try a 3-miler on the treadmill and see how I felt. I took it slow, and ran without stopping to walk. It actually felt good!

Week of Workouts {Nov. 23-29, 2015}

Happy Monday!

I'm once again late posting my workouts from last week. My goal is to post these on Sundays. But I took a little break from blogging over the long holiday weekend ; )

I'm sharing my workouts because I'm participating in the Holiday Sweat Challenge with Sweat Pink and Run to the Finish. Each week, I'm setting fitness goals for myself so that I stay active and healthy during the holidays.

My goal for last week was to get in 450 minutes of exercise, do Pilates or yoga three times and go running at least once.

I only got in 195 minutes of exercise. I had planned on working out a lot more over Thanksgiving weekend, but I had a headache Thursday, Friday and Saturday, and wasn't feeling up to much movement.

I was finally feeling better on Sunday, so I went for a run at the gym. This is proof that a participating in a challenge like this is motivation! I very rarely go to the gym on the weekends, and I typically don't workout on the weekends unless I'm going to a yoga class or going on a hike. Go me!

Happy Monday!

Today I'm sharing my workouts from last week. I'm teaching a lot of fitness classes right now because a bunch of instructors are taking time off for the holidays. So I'm trying to find a balance between teaching and doing my own workouts.

The Holiday Sweat Challenge hosted by Sweat Pink and Run to the Finish is still going strong. I haven't been great at logging my workout minutes online. But I've still been working at reaching my activity minute goal each week. Last week, I got in 390 minutes of activity. My goal has been to hit 450 minutes, so I'll keep working towards that!

I've also been slacking on participating in their Instagram challenges each week. I'm going to hop back on this week though! This week's theme is "Nourish Yourself," and I'm all about that! You can follow me here.

Happy Friday!!

I started off my Friday by making an appearance on a local news show The Good Life to talk about my upcoming Kick Your Sugar Cravings Workshop! I get so flustered when I'm on live TV! But I survived.

I'm glad it's Friday, but I have a work-heavy weekend ahead of me. I'm going to have a booth at a local conference, so I'll be talking health coaching all weekend long. It will be fun, but I'm definitely going to miss my usual slow mornings, yoga class and Netflix/Hulu watching.

I hope you have plans for rest and relaxation this weekend! If not, make sure you can fit it into your weekend schedule!

Before the weekend hits, I wanted to share some of my recent favorite things! This is a totally random compilation, so if you have any random favorite thing make sure to share in the comments!

Weekend Recap {Jan. 29-31, 2016}

Posted February 1, 2016 in Weekend Recap, weekend, yoga and 8 more

Happy Monday!

I had an indulgent weekend celebrating the BF's birthday. We had a party with friends, a date night and brunch with my family. All the eating out has me feeling a pretty bloated and heavy today.

So today is all about moving on and getting back on track. When I have an indulgent weekend, I don't spend time feeling guilty about my food choices. I actually enjoyed every single indulgent bite, and was happy to be celebrating my guy.

To get back on track, I'll feed my body with nourishing foods and drinks all day. I started my morning with an apple cider vinegar drink and oats, chia seeds, blueberries, almond milk, cinnamon and almond butter. I'll sip on some green juice later in the morning, and drink lots of water throughout the day.

Weekend Recap {Feb. 5-7, 2016}

Posted February 9, 2016 in Weekend Recap, weekend, yoga and 5 more

We're at the start of another week. The weekend flew by, as usual.

I'm not feeling super hot today. I'm having some pretty terrible pain in my jaw that's causing a headache and ear ache. I'm pretty sure I have TMJ, which causes me to clench my teeth when I sleep, which causes headaches, neck pain and jaw pain.

I got a mouth guard from my dentist to protect my teeth about a year and a half ago, but I still clench my teeth. All the relaxation techniques I've tried - yoga, meditation, drinking CALM, drinking Nighty Night tea, using essential oils - haven't worked. So I'm making an appointment to see a chiropractor this week. I'll let you know how it goes.

Although the week is off to a rough start, I had a great weekend! Here's a recap...

Half-Marathon Training 2016 - Weeks 1 and 2

Posted February 9, 2016 in running, half-marathon training, Lincoln Half-Marathon and 7 more

I started my training for the Lincoln Half-Marathon!!

This will be my 10th half-marathon and I'm running the race on my 33rd birthday!

Going in to training, I was not feeling confident at all. My last few half-marathons have been extremely challenging (Yellowstone Half-Marathon), my pace has been getting slower and slower, I've been having severe hip and hamstring pain and I developed plantar fasciitis the last time I trained.

My other struggle the past two years has been training while teaching group fitness classes. I would often skip my weekday short runs because I was too exhausted from teaching or just didn't have time.

I really wanted to train with intention this time. I want to feel strong and confident on race day. So here's what I'm doing differently...

  • I hired a running coach. I really wanted a customized training program that would help me build strength and endurance, and help me stay injury-free. After looking at my local options (and not finding what I was looking for), I ended up going with Amanda Brooks from Run to the Finish. We had an initial phone call so she could find out about my goals, struggles, schedule, workouts I enjoy, etc. Then (within a few days), she had created a customized plan for me. I love my training program because it includes workouts that I like doing and fits perfectly with my schedule. She's also pushing me to incorporate hill sprints and hard effort into my runs, which is something I've never really done before. Amanda is also providing tons of tips on warming up, recovery and more, and I'm getting support and encouragement in her private Facebook group.
  • I'm doing lots of yoga. Amanda included yoga in my training program, but I also talked to Sarah Sutton, a local yoga teacher and former long distance runner. She convinced me to give yin yoga a try to help with my recovery. I'm taking Sarah's yin yoga class through Kearney Park and Rec, and I've loved it so far. Not only is it incredibly relaxing, but the stretches feel so amazing.
  • I cut back on teaching fitness classes. I'm currently teaching two classes on Tuesdays, and not subbing much.

As I get deeper into my training, I'll share more details about what I'm doing. But these are the most significant changes that I've made to my training so far.

Here's a look at my training from the first two weeks...

Weekend Recap {Feb. 12-14, 2016}

Posted February 15, 2016 in Weekend Recap, weekend, yoga and 9 more

I can't believe we're already back to Monday. I know I say this all the time, but weekends go by way too fast.

I'm feeling pretty cranky today. I didn't sleep well last night, and I'm starting a very busy week with piles of laundry, a sink overflowing with dirty dishes and an overall dirty house. This makes me feel incredibly overwhelmed. I'll be teaching fitness classes or meeting with clients every evening after work, so getting these things done won't be easy. Take a deep breath!

Despite going into the week feeling like a mess, I had a great weekend. I ended up doing a lot more than I anticipated, but there was lots of celebrating! Here's a look at my weekend...

Half-Marathon Training 2016 - Weeks 3 and 4

Posted February 24, 2016 in running, half-marathon, half-marathon training and 6 more

I can't believe I'm already in my fifth week of half-marathon training. Running is finally beginning to feel slightly easier!

One of my biggest mental hurdles has been not getting down on myself for running at a slower pace than in the past. During my six mile run on Sunday, I started thinking back to when I first started running about eight years ago.

I didn't know any other runners. I didn't know what a fast pace was. I didn't even have a running watch or GPS on my phone. I ran at the middle school track to keep track of my miles.

When I finished training runs, I felt a great sense of pride. Running any more than 3 miles seemed like such a huge accomplishment. The first time I ran 10 miles, I bought myself a giant cocktail ring to celebrate.

I'm working on accepting where I am in this moment and taking time to congratulate myself after each run.

Here are details from my training...

Weekend Recap {March 3-6, 2016} - Mahoney State Park Trip

Posted March 7, 2016 in Weekend Recap, Mahoney State Park, running and 8 more

I'm home after a long weekend at Mahoney State Park with the BF and some friends. We had a wonderful time!

It was a weekend full of hiking, playing games, laughing, eating delicious food, indulging in s'mores and cake, and relaxing.

Our 'cabining' trips are my favorite trips because I always feel rejuvenated physically, emotionally and mentally after these trips. There's no pressure to go, go, go. Being at the cabin is very easy going.

Here's a recap of the weekend...

Half-Marathon Training 2016 - Weeks 5-6

Posted March 11, 2016 in running, half-marathon training, half-marathon and 6 more

I'm still running!

I'm currently on the 7th week of my half-marathon training! The race is less than two months away, so my weekend mileage is really starting to increase.

My training has been such a roller coaster with headaches, a blizzard, falls on the ice, weird jaw pain and a gross cold. Read about my first four weeks of training here:

Weeks 1 and 2

Weeks 3 and 4

Maybe training has always been like this, and I just never noticed because I didn't share such specific details on the blog!

I'm working on staying positive about my training, and these running memes definitely help me keep a sense of humor about running.

Here's a look at my fifth and sixth weeks of training....

I hope you had a wonderful weekend!

The BF and I didn't have any major plans for the weekend...he had to work and I had to run.

When I wasn't running, I was eating, doing a bit of work, celebrating my niece's birthday, listening to Serial and watching Jessica Jones on Netflix.

Here is a look at my weekend...

Other than yoga, I'll be running, recovering from running and doing some work. I'll make sure I make time for relaxation and fun.

Before we head into the weekend, here are some of my recent favorite things!
