Raspberry Passion Fruit Smoothie

Posted July 17, 2014 in smoothie, drink, fruit and 5 more

I have this habit of impulse buying produce that I 1) have never tried before or 2) have never heard of before or 3) have no idea how to prepare.

When I see something new in the produce section, I get excited and things go in my cart.

My latest produce impulse purchase was a passion fruit!

10 Delicious Smoothie Bowl Recipes

Posted August 26, 2014 in Smoothie Bowl, healthy eating, healthy living and 3 more

What is up with this sudden obsession with smoothie bowls?

The smoothie bowl is like the new chia pudding or something. I admit, I'm totally into it (because I get sucked into all of these healthy recipe trends!).

What's not to love? You get all the health benefits and deliciousness of a smoothie, but you can add fun toppings to your smoothie bowl and eat it like fro yo! I'm in!

My first smoothie bowl was the Tone It Up Breakfast Banana Bowl, which is a green smoothie base topped with blueberries, goji berries, nuts and banana slices. I was totally hooked!

The easiest fruity cocktails you'll ever make

Posted August 29, 2014 in smoothie, cocktails, drinks and 5 more

*My local Hy-Vee provided me with Fruchi Real Fruit Smoothies, but all opinions are my own.

I don't know about you, but I'm not quite ready to let go of summer. People are already going nuts over the Pumpkin Spice Latte! It's still in the 80s with crazy high humidity!

I'm going to hold onto summer for just a bit longer. I still have maxi dresses that need to be worn!

One of my fave ways to enjoy the warm weather and sunshine is with a fruity cocktail.

Weekend Recap {Sept. 19-21} - Housewarming Party!

Posted September 22, 2014 in weekend, Weekend Recap, housewarming and 9 more

As soon as I got out of bed this morning, the negative thoughts started racing through my head - I look so fat, I've gained weight, I'm breaking out and my face looks ugly, my hair looks terrible today, my makeup looks horrendous, I hate all my clothes, etc. As the morning went on, my mood worsened.

Have you ever had a day like that? I just couldn't push a positive thought through my brain! I didn't eat very well over the weekend, and didn't get in a single workout. I also didn't drink enough water, and didn't have a lot of time to relax. Let's just say I woke up on the wrong side of the bed today.

Then I read this quote, and it made me realize that this bad day just means I need take a step back, reevaluate my needs and take better care of myself.

"Setbacks are miracles in disguise. Always believe that things are working out in your favor." (Source)

I also reminded myself that my weekend was full of amazing quality time with friends and family. Something that is also much needed.

Here are details about my weekend...

What I Eat in a Day {Oct. 8, 2014}

Posted October 9, 2014 in What I Eat in a Day, food, eat and 6 more

I haven't shared a day of eats for quite some time!

Right now, I'm trying to eat energizing foods to keep me going because I'm teaching 7 fitness classes a week now! But I'm also trying to lose a few pounds because the BF and I gained a couple of pounds after we moved in together

This is a pretty typical day of eating for me. No two days are ever exactly alike, but these are some of the foods I eat consistently. I actually eat oatmeal 75% of the time, but I was short on time so I made a quick breakfast instead.

Here's what I ate...

Ninja Review + Fall Smoothie Recipes

Posted November 12, 2014 in Ninja Kitchen, Nutri Ninja, smoothie and 6 more

I received a Nutri Ninja from the kind people at Ninja Kitchen after meeting them at FitBloggin last summer!! I was incredibly excited to try this thing out.

The thing is, I have a bit of a blender obsession. I have owned and currently own quite a few blenders (maybe 4-5). It always seems like some blenders are great for one thing, but aren't great for another. So I use different blenders for different situations. Totally normal, right?

How to make your own smoothie packs

Posted March 18, 2015 in smoothie, fruit, vegetables and 6 more

How was your St. Patrick's Day?

The BF made corned beef and cabbage in the crock pot all day, I made a turkey shepherd's pie and my parents came over for dinner. I also enjoyed a Guinness and a mini salted caramel cupcake while we listened to Irish music on Pandora. It was a fun night!

Today I wanted to share how I make smoothie packs. This is something I recently started doing, and it's a huge time saver!

Peanut Butter Mocha Smoothie

After yoga class on Saturday, I was craving iced coffee, chocolate and a smoothie. I didn't want to pay $4 for an iced coffee (I've been getting coffee shop coffee a little too much lately), so I whipped something up in my kitchen to satisfy all of my cravings (and save some $).

This smoothie is Ah-Mazing!! I didn't want it to end!

Raspberry Vanilla Smoothie

Posted May 14, 2015 in smoothie, Raspberry Vanilla Smoothie, raspberries and 6 more

I've been absolutely obsessed with raspberries lately. I love them on top of my morning oats drizzled with cashew butter. Mmmmm….

Besides being little sweet and tart bites of delight, raspberries are full of antioxidants and anti-inflammatory phytonutrients. (source)

Have you noticed that inflammation has been a pretty hot topic in health news lately? I've seen tons of articles lately on the best anti-inflammatory foods and how to reduce inflammation. What does having inflammation mean? Well, inflammation is a normal part of the body's immune response. But excess sugar, saturated fat and processed foods can cause chronic inflammation, which plays a role in obesity, heart disease, depression and cancer. (source)

Your best bet for fighting inflammation is packing your diet full of fruits (berries!) and vegetables, whole grains and omega-3 fatty acids, and sticking to a regular workout routine. Reducing stress is also a good idea.

Weekend Recap {May 29-31}

Posted June 1, 2015 in Weekend Recap, weekend, yoga and 8 more

We're back at the beginning of another week. I wish weekends could last forever.

The weather was finally late spring-like, so the BF and I spent lots of time outside. We went to the farmer's market, we planted our garden and we went trail running/hiking. It was nice to have a weekend without rain!

Here's more on our weekend adventures...

Post-Workout Chocolate Smoothie

Post-Workout-Chocolate-Smoothie-3.jpg#as

I've been pretty obsessed with turmeric lately. I've mostly been putting it in my morning immunity boosting concoction - orange juice, ginger, turmeric, cinnamon and honey (I'm getting ready to travel so I'm getting myself as healthy as possible!).

But after a run recently, I had a random idea to throw some turmeric in my chocolate smoothie. Sounds weird, I know. Especially since turmeric is a savory spice used in curry. But turmeric contains more than two dozen anti-inflammatory compounds (source), so I thought it would be the perfect smoothie add-in after a workout. Because inflammation occurs in muscles after workouts, I try to eat anti-inflammatory foods to prevent soreness.

I also think turmeric is a magical healing spice. Seriously!

A calorie-torching workout that gives back - Life Equals Charity Boot Camp

Posted September 2, 2015 in Life Equals, supplements, workout and 8 more

*Life Equals offered to give away samples of their supplements to people who attended my morning boot camp. I'm a Life Equals Ambassador. When you make a purchase using my coupon code, I receive a commission. All opinions are my own!

I've been leading a morning HIIT-style boot camp since late June. I started the workouts because I wanted to add some high intensity interval training into my workout routine.

I'm not super motivated to workout on my own, so I asked the Facebook world who wanted to get out of bed before the sunrise for a free workout. Luckily, there were actually people who wanted to join me!

We've been meeting at the Yanney Park Outdoor Fitness Pad. So the workouts combine bodyweight movements with the machines that are available at the fitness pad. The workouts are always super sweaty, and I'm usually sore the day after!

Recently, Life Equals contacted me and asked if I would want to do a charity workout. I love the folks at Life Equals so I was immediately in!

Delicious Fresh Juice Recipes + the Benefits of Juicing

Posted January 12, 2016 in fresh juice recipes, juicer, juicing and 6 more

I know it's super cliché, but if I could wear yoga pants and drink green juice every day I totally would.

But I live in the middle of Nebraska where juice bars don't exist. My local grocery stores carry bottled juices, but at $4 to $8 each, I refuse to buy them regularly. So about two years ago, I bought an inexpensive juicer (I have this Hamilton Beach Juicer). Now, I absolutely love making my own fresh juices.

For me, drinking fresh juice makes getting in my necessary vitamins and nutrients easier. I especially love drinking fresh juice in the winter, when I don't eat as much fruit.

The liquid extracted from fruits and vegetables contains vitamins, minerals and phytonutrients. Some say that drinking fresh juice allows your body to absorb the nutrients better than when you eat whole fruits and vegetables. It is recommended to drink fresh juice on an empty stomach or about an hour before a meal.

Juicing is also said to allow your digestive system to rest because juice is much easier for your body to process.

I'm all about finding a healthy balance. I love including juice in my diet, which is made up of plenty of whole fruits and vegetables.

I highly recommend watching the doumentaries Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead and Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead 2. Joe Cross, the filmmaker, has a more intense approach to juicing, but the films really outline the benefits of juicing and eliminating processed food from your diet.

Happy National Peanut Butter Lovers Day!

I celebrate this holiday every day because peanut butter is one of my favorite foods. But because it's a national holiday, we can celebrate peanut butter even more!

My go-to sweet treat is a banana with natural peanut butter. Sometimes I'll melt dark chocolate into the peanut butter if I'm craving chocolate.

But I also like to add peanut butter to my smoothies!

Super-Healthy-Shamrock-Shake.jpg#asset:5

I don't know about you, but I'm all about green right now!

Spring is on its way in and the trees will shed their brown leaves for fresh green ones, the BF and I are starting to plan our garden, salads are starting to sound more appetizing and St. Patrick's Day is almost here!

In the spirit of St. Patrick's Day and the arrival of spring, I recreated a Shamrock Shake! But, this version is super super healthy. When I was browsing recipes online, I noticed that a lot of at-home lower calorie versions contain fat-free or low-fat ingredients and food coloring.

My version is made with REAL food. And it's still incredibly delicious.

Before we get to the recipe, here's what you need to know about McDonald's Shamrock Shake...

It could be because you're blood sugar levels are out of balance.

So what do you do to balance your blood sugar?

I have a magic formula for keeping your blood sugar levels balanced, and reducing your sugar cravings! It's simple...

Fourth of July 2017 Recap

Posted July 6, 2017 in Fourth of July, smoothie, summer body love and 4 more

After having five days off work for my trip to Yosemite National Park, coming back and working three days, I had a four day weekend for the Fourth of July!

It's been the most glorious few weeks with very little work and lots of summer fun. I could get used to this.

The fiancé and I didn't have any plans for the holiday weekend, so we just did whatever we felt like doing in each moment. It was exactly what I needed.

I won't bore you with all the details. I did spend a fair amount of time cleaning and organizing the house, working on my upcoming 30-Day Summer Body Love Program and watching Netflix (watching the current season of Orange is the New Black).

Here are some highlights from my holiday weekend...

Beauty Greens Smoothie

Green-Smoothie-with-Spinach.png#asset:77

While I believe that using non-toxic skincare and beauty products is important, I believe it's just as important to nourish your skin by eating a healthy diet.

I notice a major difference in my skin when I'm eating well. When my diet is full of nourishing greens, healthy fats and protein, and I'm drinking plenty of water, my skin is glowing.

When I'm eating more sugar, enjoying more cocktails than usual or if I have a couple slices of pizza, my skin breaks out, isn't as glowy, and my under eye circles and wrinkles are more pronounced.

I love the way that I feel when my skin looks and feels healthy, so I'm all about filling my diet with those skin nourishing foods. Lately, I've been drinking a green smoothie with some special ingredients that have specific skin benefits.
