What are aronia berries?

A couple of months ago, I was having a Twitter convo with another blogger about acai berries. I've been dying to buy acai berry smoothie packs to make acai bowls.

Well, Whole Foods Omaha chimed into our conversation and suggested that we try aronia berries because they are also a superfood and they are grown more locally - in Iowa.

I added them to my Whole Foods list, but I haven't been to WF since the recommendation.

Well, I just happened to spot aronia berries at Hy-Vee! I was so excited to try this new fruit.

I received a Nutri Ninja from the kind people at Ninja Kitchen after meeting them at FitBloggin last summer!! I was incredibly excited to try this thing out. 

The thing is, I have a bit of a blender obsession. I have owned and currently own quite a few blenders (maybe 4-5). It always seems like some blenders are great for one thing, but aren't great for another. So I use different blenders for different situations. Totally normal, right?

I love love love my green smoothies. It's the perfect way to satisfy my sweet tooth and feed my body lots of nutrition.

I admit, however, that green smoothies can sometimes turn out slightly….earthy. And there is nothing worse than have little bits of green leaves floating around in your smoothie. So there is a bit of an art to making the perfect green smoothie.

During the summer, I am a smoothie-making machine! I actually love smoothies all year round, but smoothies taste even more delicious when it's extra hot outside.

I really don't have a go-to smoothie. I like to mix things up to keep my smoothies interesting. But I do love making green smoothies. They always turn out so beautifully, and they are packed with nutrients.

One of the ingredients I always add to my green smoothies is spirulina, a blue-green micro-algae that grows in fresh water lakes and streams. Why?!?!? You might be asking me/yourself.

My Five Favorite {sugar-free} Sweet Treats

I have a major sweet tooth! I love cakes, cookies, doughnuts, chocolate, scones, pastries and candy. Yep, I love it all.

And there was a time when I indulged in those things far too often. I had to have them! And once I started eating something sweet, I couldn't stop. I just wanted more and more. Then I felt guilty for eating so much sugar. So I would eat some more! 

Today, I don't crave sugar like I used to. I don't feel that intense desire to eat cookies or chocolate. And when I do eat something sugary, I don't feel guilty. 

So how did I break free from my addiction to sugar and shed my sugar guilt?

Weekend Recap {Feb. 12-14, 2016}

I can't believe we're already back to Monday. I know I say this all the time, but weekends go by way too fast.

I'm feeling pretty cranky today. I didn't sleep well last night, and I'm starting a very busy week with piles of laundry, a sink overflowing with dirty dishes and an overall dirty house. This makes me feel incredibly overwhelmed. I'll be teaching fitness classes or meeting with clients every evening after work, so getting these things done won't be easy. Take a deep breath!

Yes, eating more salads could help get rid of your out of control sugar cravings! 

At one point in my life, I was surviving off of Life cereal, doughnuts, pasta, breadsticks, Pasta-Roni and soft serve ice cream. 

My all carb all sugar diet left me craving sugar all day long. My cravings were caused, in part, by the roller coaster my blood sugar levels were on all day. 

But I was also craving sugar because there was something incredibly important missing from my diet - adequate nutrition.

Happy Tuesday! I'm late posting my weekend recap because I had an exhausting (but wonderful) weekend in yoga teacher training and then I was in Omaha all day Monday for a visit with my functional medicine doctor. 

Today I'm getting caught up on emails, scheduling health coaching sessions, blogging, doing laundry and preparing for the college class I'll be teaching (which starts next week!)…oh yeah, and working at my full-time job. My life is crazy and amazing.
