Friday Faves {May 29, 2015}

Happy Friday! I hope you have fun plans for the weekend!

This week has been super weird.

  • Our landlords are renovating our bathroom, and the contractor built a temporary bathroom in our unfinished basement (where a bathroom used to be). I saw a giant red cricket and a snake in our basement Wednesday night, so I've been totally freaked since. How many days can I go without showering?
  • I'm still nursing my plantar fasciitis. I've been diligently wearing my athletic shoes and arch support inserts. But my outfits have been pretty lame. Dress pants with athletic shoes = not a good look. I know it's just shoes, but I've been feeling pretty frumpy all week.
  • I haven't worked out since Tuesday when I taught a morning cycling class and an evening water aerobics class. My doctor said I could still run and teach fitness classes, but I talked to a physical therapist (an acquaintance, not at an appointment) and she said to take a break from physical activity. I think my body needs the rest, but it feels super weird not to workout.
  • I tried to go to a new-to-me yoga class Thursday night with my friend, Molly, who is visiting from out of town, and no one showed up! The instructor just never showed, and there was nothing on her website about a cancelled class. It is so hard to find yoga classes around here! FYI, Molly and I walked down the street and had a glass of wine instead.

So that was my weird week. And here are some of my favorite things right now...

A calorie-torching workout that gives back - Life Equals Charity Boot Camp

Posted September 2, 2015 in Life Equals, supplements, workout and 8 more

*Life Equals offered to give away samples of their supplements to people who attended my morning boot camp. I'm a Life Equals Ambassador. When you make a purchase using my coupon code, I receive a commission. All opinions are my own!

I've been leading a morning HIIT-style boot camp since late June. I started the workouts because I wanted to add some high intensity interval training into my workout routine.

I'm not super motivated to workout on my own, so I asked the Facebook world who wanted to get out of bed before the sunrise for a free workout. Luckily, there were actually people who wanted to join me!

We've been meeting at the Yanney Park Outdoor Fitness Pad. So the workouts combine bodyweight movements with the machines that are available at the fitness pad. The workouts are always super sweaty, and I'm usually sore the day after!

Recently, Life Equals contacted me and asked if I would want to do a charity workout. I love the folks at Life Equals so I was immediately in!

One thing that I have realized about myself is that my day is better when it begins peacefully. When my mornings are rushed, hectic and stressful, I feel that way all day long. But when my morning is relaxed, quiet and slow moving, my day is less stressful.

I decided that I wanted this year to be all about peacefulness and joy (read more about that here), so I've implemented a new morning routine.

I tested it out during my holiday break from work, and I've continued my routine now that I'm back to work. I've been feeling less stressed as I begin my day. I truly believe that how you start your day sets the tone for the rest of your day!

Here's how I start my day and how you can create your own healthy morning routine...

Using Essential Oils for Running

Posted March 22, 2016 in essential oils, running, half-marathon training and 4 more

Essential-Oils-for-Running.jpg#asset:554

I started using essential oils about a year ago, and I've been amazed at how they can supplement my healthy lifestyle.

I add a few drops of lemon essential oil to warm water every morning to help aid digestion. I rub peppermint essential oil on my temples and neck when I have headaches. I use a blend of oils meant to help relieve stress at night to help me sleep. And I diffuse a variety of oils in my diffusers at home and at work.

But I recently began wondering how I could use essential oils to increase my performance or aid in my recovery from running. I'm currently training for a half-marathon, and can use all the help I can get!

So I asked Sarah Sutton, a registered yoga teacher and Young Living distributor/essential oil educator, to share some insight on oils and running.

I took Sarah's essential oils and chakras workshop last November and I've been taking her yin yoga classes. She is a wonderful teacher, very nurturing, kind and warm. So I was very excited that she agreed to share her knowledge about essential oils here on Sweet Success!

Here's what Sarah had to say…

Your Gut Bacteria is Causing Sugar Cravings

Posted April 28, 2016 in probiotics, gut health, healthy living and 5 more

While some of our cravings for sugar may be caused by emotions or habits, some of us could be experiencing physical cravings.

And it all starts in the gut.

The bacteria in your digestive system can determine the types of foods you crave.

There are millions of microbes living in the body, many in the stomach and intestines. Things like taking antibiotics, eating processed food, eating high sugar food, stress, lack of sleep and breathing toxins can shift the balance of good and bad bacteria in your gut.

What Supplements Should You Be Taking?

Supplement-Guide.jpg#asset:6375:medium

*The following are my suggestions based off my education and experience as a health coach and my personal experiences. You should always consult a medical professional before taking a new supplement. A functional medicine doctor can create a supplement program for your unique needs.

There are so many supplements on the market that choosing what's right for you can be confusing.

I believe that we're all different and our bodies thrive on different things - one person's food is another person's poison. You may have to experiment a bit with your supplement routine, and your supplement routine may change over time as you age.

But finding supplements that work for you doesn't have to be hard. Here's my guide to buying the best supplements...

My Health Journey + My Experience with Functional Medicine

My-Health-Journey.jpeg#asset:6449:medium

Today, I'm getting super personal and sharing some struggles that I've been having with my health.

This is something I've been going through for a few years now, but I've been hesitant to share because I didn't know what was going on with my body.

Over the past three years, I've transformed the way that I treat my body - eating more nourishing and whole foods, working out consistently, incorporating meditation and more yoga into my life and putting more energy into my life passion.

Yet, I found myself experiencing more and more headaches and migraines, and gaining weight very steadily.

Natural remedies for when you're feeling under the weather

It's been a rough week over here. I'm home from work for a second day this week with a gross cold/sinus thing.

I can't stop sneezing, my eyes won't stop watering, my head is pounding and I'm just exhausted.

I actually haven't been sick in over a year! I credit my year of health to the fact that I've been on top of my nutrition game...drinking greens almost every day, staying super hydrated, drinking my antioxidant supplement, taking a daily probiotic and multivitamin (which has an antioxidant-rich spice blend) and drinking all the smoothies. I honestly can't believe I made it through last year - a year with a constantly packed schedule and lots of stress - without getting sick.

It seems like lots of people have been walking around with some kind of sickness lately, so I thought I would share some of the natural remedies I use when I'm sick...
