May Plank Challenge - Week 1 Schedule!

Posted May 12, 2014 in Sweet Success, planks, plank and 4 more

We're starting the May Plank Challenge today!

This fitness challenge will help you tighten your core just in time for summer! We're not just holding a plank every day, we are going to challenge ourselves with different plank variations to create strong abs!

In just three weeks you will strengthen your core, and feel lean and toned just in time for summer!

A lot of plank challenges have participants hold a regular plank every day for increasing amounts of time. But I wanted to create something that was more challenging.

I've incorporated many plank variations in this challenge to strengthen your core and work your entire body.

Yoga Inspired Toning + Cardio Workout

Posted May 16, 2014 in yoga, cardio, workout and 5 more

I've been doing the FitFluential Namaste in May Challenge - doing yoga every day this month - and I've also been doing Beach Yoga Girl's May I Handstand Challenge on Instagram. So yoga has been on my mind lately!

I even got into a crow pose for at least 3-4 seconds the other day! This has been one of my yoga goals for awhile. I really think the handstand practice helped me get here!

All my recent yoga practice inspired me to create this yoga inspired workout for a class that I subbed last weekend. The class at my gym is called Chizzel and it's meant to incorporate toning with bursts of cardio.

Week of Workouts {May 17-23}

Posted May 24, 2014 in workouts, fitness, workout and 6 more

Yesterday, I wrote about how I've been in a funk for part of the week and that I didn't feel like working out. But then I typed out my workouts for the week, and realized that I was probably being hard on myself. I did workout every day this week. My workouts may not have been super intense, but I did something every day.

I'm still following the Tone It Up Bikini Series (I attached links to all those workouts), but I've been slacking on my FitFluential Namaste in May yoga workouts. I only got in two yoga workouts this week (my goal was to do yoga every day in May). I did pretty well the first two and a half weeks of the month.

I also missed a day or two on my Sweet Success May Plank Challenge workouts. I feel like I'm doing too many fitness challenges right now! How are you doing with your planks?

Week of Workouts {May 24-30}

Posted May 31, 2014 in workout, workouts, fitness and 5 more

This week was, apparently, all cardio all the time. I only got in one toning session this week (although Insanity incorporates some toning). I really didn't feel like working out after the BF and I got back from Colorado. Maybe it was the post-travel exhaustion, or feeling low about having to get back to the real world (ie. rental house hunting).

I also totally slacked on my FitFluential Namaste in May Challenge. I didn't get in one yoga session! I need to get back to it.

I am definitely hard on myself when I have a week like this. But I need to look at the positives of my week - I ran a race, I worked out 6 days, I went to an intense fitness class, and I got up early one day and went running!

High Intensity Bleacher Workout {no equipment needed}

Posted June 3, 2014 in workout, summer, fitness and 6 more

About a month ago, my friend Russanne suggested that we start getting together on Sunday mornings during the summer to do workouts at the high school track.

I was thrilled about the idea because I don't usually do intense workouts on the weekends (unless I'm half-marathon training), and I tend to find myself glued to the sofa being lazy on Sundays. I thought this was a great way to get motivated to workout, and I thought it would be fun! Working out with a buddy is always more fun!

Week of Workouts {May 31 - June 6}

Posted June 7, 2014 in workout, fitness, exercise and 6 more

After my workout-filled weekend, I spent the week without a lot of energy. It may have been the weather. It was pretty hot most days this week. That tends to suck my energy until I get used to the summer heat.

But I still managed to get in three toning workouts, a yoga workout and my usual cardio.

I set my alarm every day this week to get up early and go running before it got hot outside. Every single day I hit snooze and didn't get up until I had to get ready for work. I'm going to keep trying! I'm determined to start a morning workout routine!

How do you motivate yourself to get up early?

Week of Workouts {June 7-13}

Posted June 14, 2014 in workout, fitness, exercise and 3 more

This week was a little light on workouts, especially cardio. I was out of town for a couple of days for a work trip, and wasn't able to get in a lot of working out. I only got in three days of cardio - I usually do cardio nearly every day.

I did make it to an Insanity class though. That class is so tough! I have a love/hate relationship with Insanity. I don't love it while I'm doing it (all that jumping!), but I love the way I feel when I'm done. I feel like I really worked my ass off. There's always a pool of sweat at my feet when I'm done.

Have you ever tried insanity?

My friend Russanne and I met for another round of Workout Club over the weekend. Workout Club is basically just the two of us getting together to workout, but we like to have formal titles for our get-togethers.

Last time, we did a bleacher workout that included intervals of toning and cardio (stair runs!). For this week's workout, we stayed on the track and went back and forth between running laps and doing body weight toning movements.

My new routine of doing tough workouts on the weekends has been great! It allows me to take a day or two off during the week, which makes life less stressful these days. I've been crazy busy packing up my life to move in with the BF and getting ready to leave for 11 days to go to Georgia!

I usually don't count household tasks as exercise, but packing and painting are definitely workouts! I spent about three hours painting Thursday night and woke up with sore arms and shoulders!

Pink Barre Review

Posted July 9, 2014 in barre, travel, workout and 6 more

I've been wanting to take a barre class forever so when I found a class on Go Recess at Pink Barre in Atlanta, I signed up immediately!

I booked a class at the Pink Barre location in Buckhead near my cousin Kristi's apartment where I stayed for a few days. Kristi generously let me stay with her after FitBloggin in Savannah and before the BF arrived in Atlanta and we checked into a hotel. Check out my FitBloggin Days 1-2 Recap and my FitBloggin Day 3 Recap.

If you are traveling, I highly recommend using Go Recess to book fitness classes. I just put in my cousin's address and I found a bunch of fitness classes near her place. This Pink Barre location was just a couple of miles from her apartment.

Week of Workouts {July 12-18}

Posted July 20, 2014 in workout, fitness, exercise and 7 more

It's been a little while since I've written a Week of Workouts post! I got a little off when I was in Georgia earlier this month.

But I'm getting back into my routine, and I'm working out somewhat regularly again. Well, let me clarify…I'm teaching five fitness classes a week right now. So my workouts are the classes I'm teaching mostly. But I actually do the workouts in all of the classes I teach. You know how in some fitness classes, the instructor doesn't do the workout with you. I'm lucky enough to be able to workout with the people I'm teaching. I am drenched in sweat by the end of my classes!

I haven't done much more than my classes because I've also been spending every evening after teaching unpacking and organizing my new house. I've been exhausted!

I am planning on getting back to biking though. If you remember, I'm training for a 60 mile bike ride! With my trip to Georgia and moving, I took about 3 weeks off of training. Yikes! I have just three more weekends before the ride. I'm hoping to get my mileage up to at least 40 miles, so 60 won't feel too much like death.

Here's what I did this week….

Weekend Recap {July 18-20} - Triple Breakfast + Moving

Posted July 21, 2014 in weekend, healthy, Weekend Recap and 11 more

Sorry my posts have been a bit unpredictable lately! Since the BF and I just moved into our new house last weekend, we don't have our internet hooked up yet! Yes, a whole week without internet. It's torture. Charter was supposed to hook it up Monday, but they didn't show up.

The weekend was filled with more moving! Last weekend, the BF and I started the process of moving in together! Neither of us have to be out of our old houses by any particular date, so we have been slowly moving our stuff into our new house.

But I managed to fit in some workouts, a bit of fun (and A LOT of breakfast) into our busy moving schedule...

I will buy ALL the workout clothes

I am addicted to buying workout clothes. Like, totally obsessed. I can't stop.

My fave fitness apparel to purchase - workouts pants. I love crazy prints and bright colors. So if I see a colorful pair of workout leggings, I have to have a deep heart to heart with myself. "Do you really NEED these pants?" "How often will you wear them?" "Do they really look flattering on you?"

Most of the time my answers are "YES!" and "All the time!" and "Duh!"

I admit, this week's workouts are kinda lame. I only worked out one time outside of the fitness classes that I taught!

However, I did feel pretty sore the days after I taught Piloxing. I'm still trying to get into a routine at my new house with the BF, while unpacking, while taking my online classes, while teaching five classes a week, etc.

I did increase my steps a couple of days this week though! I hit 15,000 on Tuesday!! (I'll share more on that later).

My goals for next week are to do yoga and get one or two more strength workouts in (I get some strength building with Piloxing).

Week of Workouts {July 26 - Aug. 1}

Posted August 2, 2014 in workout, Week of Workouts, fitness and 8 more

Although this week wasn't much better than last week, I did manage to squeeze in a couple of my own workouts outside of the fitness classes I teach.

My struggle is still getting up in the morning before work to workout. Since I teach all of my classes in the evenings, the morning is the only time I have to exercise. And when my alarm goes off at 5:30 a.m. every morning, can you guess what I do? Snooze. Snooze. Snooze. Off.

I don't want to discredit the workouts I get when I teach. I work hard in my classes, especially Piloxing. I leave that class dripping in sweat. But I definitely need to add in some of my own strength training, cardio and yoga.

I had a heart to heart with the BF and told him I needed a bit of motivation. I convinced him to join the August Fresh Air Fitness Challenge through FitFluential with me. We will workout outside for at least 30 minutes every day this month! I'm excited to to get out of my comfort zone a bit with my workouts.

Our Aug. 1 workout was just a 30 minute run, but it felt pretty brutal. Since it got hot, I haven't been running a whole lot. So this challenge will be good for me.

Week of Workouts {Aug. 2-8}

Posted August 9, 2014 in workout, Week of Workouts, fitness and 6 more

I've been working to incorporate more of my own workouts into my routine since I've been teaching so many fitness classes lately (6 classes this week!).

The BF and I are doing the FitFluential August Fresh Air Fitness Challenge, which has been motivating me to get outside everyday. I've loved it so far. Most days, I've only been able to get in a walk since my classes take a lot out of me. But I've enjoyed the time to be outside, get some sunshine and clear my mind.

Also, my steps have been amazing this week! My best day was Thursday - 16,060 steps! I use my FitBit to track my steps everyday. I absolutely love it. You can get Free shipping with orders over $50 at Fitbit.com! .

I still need to do better at adding in more of my own strength workouts. I seriously need to figure out how to get out of bed earlier.

I did a 65-mile bike ride! {or how not to fuel for and recover from a 65-mile bike ride}

Posted August 13, 2014 in Bike, Bike Ride, Kool-Aid Days and 6 more

I completed the Kool-Aid Classic 65-mile Bicycle Tour on Saturday! It felt like such a great accomplishment to ride that far. I had never ridden my bike more than 40-miles before! It was fun, challenging, exciting, brutal, painful and wonderful.

My friend Russanne suggested that we do the ride a few months ago to celebrate her 35th birthday. We picked a training program and followed it…sort of. By "sort of" I mean not at all. I even went without biking for a few weeks when I was in Georgia and while I was moving. My longest ride during my training was 23 miles! So I was obviously under trained for a 65-mile bike ride.

Here's how the ride went…

Week of Workouts {Aug. 9-15}

Posted August 16, 2014 in Week of Workouts, workout, fitness and 6 more

For the past few weeks, I've been struggling with adding in my own workouts on top of the 5-6 fitness classes I've been teaching each week. I've written about it in my last few Week of Workouts recaps (here and here). But this week I gave myself a break.

After last Saturday's 65-mile bike ride, I felt stiff and tired…for most of the week. I just never got my mojo back after that ride. I was dragging! I decided my body probably needed a bit of a rest. So I taught my classes and tried to get in my FitFluential August Fresh Air Fitness Challenge workouts in (4 out of 7 days).

One of the most important things about working out is listening to your body! Overtraining can lead to injury. It can also make you burned out from exercise. When you feel like you need a rest day, take it!

Is it time for a workout wardrobe makeover?

I have tried to keep my activewear contained to one drawer in my dresser. I think that's pretty good! However, the BF thinks I have a minor (ok sort of major) addiction to buying workout clothes.

I will admit, my workout drawer is stuffed full. I have to shove down some workout leggings and tank tops to get the drawer to close. It's the worst right after I do my laundry!

(Right now I do have my winter stuff stored in a plastic bin. When the seasons change, I'll switch my warm weather gear for cold weather gear. So I guess technically all my workout clothes don't fit in one drawer!)

But I definitely feel like I could use a workout wardrobe refresher!

How-to-Stay-Healthy-in-college.jpg#asset

It's been 14 years since I was a freshman in college (yikes!), but working at a university makes me think back to my days as a newbie on campus.

I had so much anxiety about finding my classes, getting my work done on time, making new friends, etc. What I ate wasn't really something I thought about.

But as a new student, the days of having your own personal cook (your mom or dad) and someone telling you not to eat that ice cream sandwich before dinner are gone!

Also, if you were a student athlete and you're not playing sports in college, you'll need to pay close attention to what you're eating! Sorry, you can't eat like you're practicing every day!

My 6-week Piloxing session through Park and Rec ended last week (the next one starts Sept. 8!), and the pool at my gym is closed for maintenance so I didn't have to teach water aerobics all week. All I taught was a morning cycling class.

It felt great to come home every day after work and not have to rush to go teach a class. I was starting to feel a bit burned out from all my classes, so the break was needed. This week, I focused mostly on getting my 30 minutes of outdoor activity for the FitFluential August Fresh Air Challenge. It was great to be outside!

As you know, I love buying workout clothes! When I'm not at my full-time job, I live in workout clothing.

Yoga apparel may just be my fave because in addition to being able to do yoga in it, it's so cozy for lounging! The BF always teases me about lounging on the couch in my yoga pants, but they are so comfortable!

10-minute At Home End of Summer HIIT Workout

I created this super quick HIIT workout to get my heart pumping and strengthen muscles (this will work your core, legs and arms!).

Week of Workouts {Sept. 6-12}

Posted September 13, 2014 in workout, Week of Workouts, yoga and 5 more

I had a great week of workouts this week!

I switched things up a bit. I went to the gym and did the stair climber. That thing is no joke! I was ready to get off the thing after 10 minutes, but I pushed myself to keep going until I hit 20 minutes. I was dripping in sweat!

I also tried out a new fitness studio - K-Town Shakedown. I took a yoga class there, but they also offer Zumba, cycling, toning and other classes.

Remember last week, when I said I was bummed because my Piloxing class through Park and Rec got cancelled, but I believed it happened for a reason. Well, Elaine, the owner of K-Town Shakedown asked if I would like to teach Piloxing classes there! I'm going to teach a preview class Wednesday, Sept. 17 at 5:30 p.m., and then I'll be on the regular October schedule. I'm super excited about this opportunity! And the fitness studio is donation based to make fitness accessible to anyone. I love that concept. Fitness classes are how I got into shape, and I want everyone to have the opportunity to take fitness classes and be fit and feel fabulous!

So trying out a new fitness studio turned into a job opportunity!

Anyway, here are my workouts from the past week.

Yoga Handstand Building Blocks Workshop at Avani

Posted September 30, 2014 in yoga, handstands, workout and 4 more

I've been doing yoga regularly since January. After just a few months of practice, and after following some amazing yogis on Instagram, I decided that my "yoga goal" was to get into a handstand.

Coming from being a runner (setting PR's, training for races) and just being the type of person who likes to set goals, I felt like I needed to be working towards something in yoga.

Also seeing all of the super fit yogis (Yoga GirlBeach Yoga GirlLaura SykoraKino MacGregorTara Stiles and others) on Instagram made me feel like I needed to be able to do inversions to be "good" at yoga.

So when Chelsie, a yoga teacher at Avani Yoga Studio in Hastings, contacted me on Facebook and told me about the handstand workshop, I was so thrilled! (Avani is where I used to practice yoga when the BF lived there). I even started practicing a bit at home so I wouldn't look like a total beginner at the workshop.

To be honest, I hadn't weighed myself since August and didn't realize I had gained weight until I put on a pair of pants and they were uncomfortably tight. At first, I thought it was because I had eaten super salty foods the day before and I was a bit bloated.

I'm absolutely thrilled about all the opportunities I have to teach right now. I'm teaching my regular classes at the Good Sam Fitness/Wellness Center, I'm teaching Piloxing at K-Town Shakedown and I'm teaching core strength classes at the University of Nebraska at Kearney Wellness Center

I was in a constant state of soreness all week, but it was totally worth it. My classes were all a lot of fun, and I was so proud of everyone for working so hard in my classes.

This weekend I'm not teaching any classes, so I'm taking some time for yoga and relaxation!

Healthy Halloween Tips + a Spooky Workout Playlist

Posted October 30, 2014 in Halloween, healthy, holidays and 6 more

Happy Halloween!

I hope you have plans for a fun and memorable holiday. I absolutely love Halloween. I love coming up with a great costume idea, creating the costume and getting dressed up.

My absolute favorite costume I've worn as an adult is definitely my cupcake costume that I wore in 2011!

My dad helped me create my cupcake out of a circle laundry basket, poster board, quilt batting and sparkly card stock. We made suspenders that were attached to the inside using sheer white ribbon. I also made a cherry headband out of a styrofoam ball, red paint, a stick and a headband. It was a major project, but it turned out amazing! The BF dressed up as a baker. It was adorbs!

*Note: I couldn't sit down in this costume and going to the ladies room was nearly impossible. The entire cupcake had to be taken off. But it was totally worth it!

Week of Workouts {Oct. 25-31}

Posted November 1, 2014 in workout, fitness, Week of Workouts and 3 more

OK, I seriously need to start doing some more of my own workouts just to make these posts more exciting. Here's yet another week of me teaching a bunch of fitness classes and not doing much else.

I did, however, take a great spooky power yoga class on Halloween morning at K-Town Shakedown (where I teach Piloxing) with the BF. The fitness studio was lit with black lights and glowing neon sticks. I wore a white tank and my blue and white leopard leggings so that I would glow!

Since it was on Halloween, we focused on fear. We worked on dropping back into wheel pose (a back bend) with the assistance of two other people. I get super freaked out about any upside down stuff in yoga (remember the handstand workshop I went to?), but I actually did really well with the wheel.

Here are my workouts from the past week...

Join me for the Holiday Sweat Challenge!

Posted November 13, 2014 in FitApproach, SweatPink, Run to the Finish and 8 more

Staying active and healthy during the holidays can be tough! There is a constant flow of food, your schedule gets packed with parties and family gatherings and lounging on the couch in flannel pajamas watching holiday movies just sounds so much more inviting than going out in the cold to workout!

But there's nothing worse than starting a new year with the goal of losing a bunch of weight you gained during the holidays or having to get in shape all over again because you skipped out on workouts for a couple of months.

For the past few years, I've created a holiday weight management program on Sweet Success. It's been a great way (for me!) to to stay on track during the holidays. But it's not happening this year. I don't have time to get it together.

Luckily, there's another great way for us to stay in shape this holiday season! The Holiday Sweat Challenge.

The Fitness Games Review + a quick at-home booty workout!

Posted November 14, 2014 in The Fitness Games, FitApproach, SweatPink and 3 more

*I received the opportunity to review The Fitness Games App through my ambassadorship with Fit Approach. I received the Platinum version of the app to review. All opinions are my own.

It has been absolutely freezing here in Nebraska. It's been the type of cold that just chills your insides and makes you want to put on all the clothes and curl up on the couch to keep warm!

But I decided that this can't become my winter uniform (even though I swore it was going to be when I posted this pic on Instagram!).

I think the best way to warm up is to move! But what do you do when leaving the house to hit the gym or go for a run isn't an option? Hello, 6 degrees! I don't think so.

Workout in your living room! I've been loving at-home workouts lately, and I've been using The Fitness Games app for quick, but powerful workouts I can do without going out into the cold.

Week of Workouts {Nov. 15-21}

Posted November 22, 2014 in Week of Workouts, workout, fitness and 8 more

I had another rough week. My headaches/migraines have returned! I woke up Tuesday and Thursday with massive headaches that turned into migraines by the afternoon.

I've gone months headache free, so I was super bummed that they have come back. Wearing my night guard has really helped. I clench my teeth while I sleep, which causes headaches. Wearing a mouth guard has helped.  I'm really not sure why I'm suddenly feeling pain again.

Usually workouts or caffeine help relieve my headaches, but not this week. Working out made me feel worse, and coffee was no help. I'm going to start keeping a headache journal again to try to find a pattern.

Despite my headaches, I taught a lot of classes - seven this week! I'm still struggling to fit in my own workouts. I decided to take it easy last weekend because I was feeling so sore from teaching so much (and I'm having some hip pain). It did help me go into the week feeling rested and more recovered than usual.

Here are my workouts from the past week...

The Best Black Friday Deals

Posted November 26, 2014 in Black Friday, Thanksgiving, shopping and 12 more

Happy Thanksgiving!

I love this holiday because it's a great reminder to slow down and think about things we are grateful for. I have so much to be thankful for this year! The BF and I moved in together, my family is happy and healthy, my blog is better than ever, I'm halfway through my Institute for Integrative Nutrition classes, I feel healthy and happy and so much more!

The BF and I will be in Hastings at his grandma's house enjoying dinner with his family. While I'm not in love with most of the traditional Thanksgiving dishes (green bean casserole, mashed potatoes and gravy, etc.), I absolutely love the BF's family's sweet potato casserole. It's whipped sweet potatoes with a brown sugar nutty topping. Mmmm. That's what I'll be indulging in!

To prepare ourselves for the big food day, the BF and I plan to run the YMCA's Turkey Trot. Note the word "plan". Last year it was absolutely freezing, so we'll see if we get out there to brave the cold again this year.

Need some tips on staying healthy during this holiday?

Check out my 9 Tips To Help You Have a Healthy Thanksgiving, which was featured on Her View From Home.

OK, let's talk about shopping! I've always loved shopping on Black Friday!

Years ago, my mom, aunt, cousins and I would spend the evening of Thanksgiving pouring over the ads looking at all the deals. We would get up at 4 a.m. Friday to start our shopping expedition. We had so much fun laughing at the craziness of the day and getting energized with cups and cups of coffee.

The photo above was taken in 2010 after an epic Black Friday shopping trip with my mom, cousin Kristi and aunt Adel.

Thanksgiving Recap + Black Friday Bootcamp

Posted November 28, 2014 in Thanksgiving, Black Friday, workout and 6 more

I hope your Thanksgiving was wonderful!

On Wednesday night, I dragged the BF over to my parent's house to look through Black Friday ads.

He was happy in the end because my mom made us a pumpkin pie. I made the homemade whipped cream. Seriously, never buy storebought whipped cream again (it's full of junk anyway!). This will change your life - 2 cups whipping cream, 4 tbsp. sugar, 1 tsp. pure vanilla extract. Whip in a mixer until stiff peaks form. Feel like a domestic diva.

My Thanksgiving day started with a gratitude meditation and a yoga class. My gym offered fitness classes Thanksgiving morning!

It really helped me take some time to think about what I'm thankful for. This year has been full of so many exciting changes! I'm especially grateful for all of you! Thank you so much for reading my blog, interacting with me on social media and supporting me! It means so much to me.

Week of Workouts {Nov. 29 - Dec. 5}

Posted December 6, 2014 in Week of Workouts, workout, fitness and 7 more

I had another week of headaches and migraines (starting Monday), so my workouts were pretty minimal. I taught my usual classes, and didn't do anything else. My headaches were pretty crazy this week.

I was in so much pain Thursday night that I couldn't sleep, and got up Friday morning feeling exhausted and still in pain. I ended up staying home from work to try to get my headache under control. Being at work makes it so much harder because I look at a computer screen all day under florescent lighting. I spent most of Friday laying in the same place on the couch. I started to feel better in the afternoon so I did some yoga for headaches and a meditation for pain.

I've mentioned this before, but my headaches are hormonal. I had them under control for about 6 months, then they came back a few months ago. I basically have anywhere from a dull headache to a migraine for 5 days straight. It's exhausting physically and emotionally. I have an appointment with my doctor in January!

Also, one of my December goals is to do yoga every day. I didn't include all of my yoga sessions in my recap because most days this week I did a short (10 min.) practice on my own without a video.

Anyway, here are my workouts from the past week...

#TakeTheLeap 30 Days of Yoga Challenge

Posted January 30, 2015 in yoga, SweatPink, prAna and 5 more

I seriously need to get back to my regular yoga practice!

I've been teaching extra fitness classes for the past few weeks, and I've barely been able to get in any other workouts. Which is also why I haven't posted a Week of Workouts post in a long time. It's too boring to read about all the fitness classes I'm teaching.

But I'm not subbing any more classes, I cut one class from my schedule and I will finally have time to do my very own workouts again! The one thing I miss the most is yoga.

So I'm excited that SweatPink and prAna are launching the #TakeTheLeap 30 Days of Yoga Challenge. This is exactly what I need right now.

The Best Fitness Gifts for Valentine's Day

Posted February 3, 2015 in Valentine's Day, shopping, gifts and 4 more

Valentine's Day is one of those love/hate holidays. If you're single, it can be a bit of a downer. If you're in a relationship and your partner isn't thoughtful or a good gift giver, it can be a let down.

I love all holidays because they're a reason to celebrate, and I love an excuse to buy gifts, pamper myself and drink champagne!

I am a believer in creating your own happiness and joy. So what if you're single on the day everyone else is celebrating love. Who cares if your partner won't think to bring you flowers. Love yourself! Gift yourself with something extra special.

I created this gift guide full of fitness apparel so you can update your fitness wardrobe! Giving your fitness clothes a little boost may help keep you motivated to workout. When you like the way you look, you're more likely to get out and move!

(Oh, and there's no shame in sending the link to this post to your partner with a mention of your faves ; ) Sometimes they just need a little hint).

If you join the #TakeTheLeap Challenge, you can win $500 worth of prAna gear.

This challenge has been so good for me because I wasn't making time for yoga with all the fitness classes I was teaching. But yoga is my favorite way to stretch, strengthen my muscles, get centered, relax and take care of myself. It has felt great to get back to a regular yoga practice.

Valentine's Day is just days away! Whether you're coupled up or single this year, I highly recommend using this day of love to love yourself!

Or as Tom Haverford would say, "Treat Yo Self."

PiYo Class Review

*The Kearney Family YMCA invited me to try out a PiYo class. All opinions are my own.

I recently took a PiYo class at the Kearney Family YMCA. This is a new class at their gym. It launched in January!

This was actually my second PiYo class. I tried PiYo for the first time at KTown Shakedown. But I always need to try a class a few times and by different instructors before I can form an opinion.

Before I get into my thoughts, let's discuss the details of PiYo. It's a low impact workout that combines Pilates and yoga-inspired moves to burn fat and sculpt lean muscles (source). You are in constant motion during the workout, which keeps your heart rate up to help you burn more calories.

Here are my thoughts on PiYo..

Self-Love February - Week 4 Challenge

I can't believe it's already the last week of February! This month flew by.

Last week, I challenged you to give yourself three compliments every day. I thought this was challenging! Especially one day when I was a bit down because I was comparing myself to others in a fitness class (yes, I do that too!). But as soon as I came up with three compliments, I instantly felt better.

This week's challenge will help you learn to listen to your body.

A perfect little healthy party snack, but an even better pre-workout energy booster. They're perfect to eat before a workout because of the carb/protein combo. (I also like to eat them to satisfy my sweet tooth)

I got the recipe from my office neighbor, Lee. She brings these energy balls to work every few months, and they always go fast! Lee was kind enough to allow me to share her recipe!

Today is the last day of Self-Love February. I hope you go into March feeling a little more love for yourself!

Creating content based on this theme was really important to me because there are so many women (and men) who spend too much time criticizing themselves, which leads to self-hate, which leads to not treating your body with care.

Each week this month, I challenged you to do something every day that would help you love yourself a little more. If you didn't participate or missed a week, do it in March (or April or May). Finding self-love is a journey and takes work!

Did you remember to turn your clock forward? I felt pretty groggy Sunday morning, but I'm feel more energized today. I even got up and went to the 5:30 a.m. BodyPump class!

Must Have Half-Marathon Training Gadgets and Gear

Posted March 10, 2015 in half-marathon, running, run and 6 more

I'm currently training for the Lincoln Half-Marathon, which is May 3 (two days after my 32nd birthday!)!!

This will be my eighth half-marathon! What?!?! It's hard for me to believe I've run 13.1 miles eigth times. Just seven years ago, I couldn't run a mile without stopping to walk.

I definitely don't consider myself to be a natural runner. Running is never easy for me. But I love being outside and running. It helps me clear my head, think about life and enjoy the outdoors. I also feel so accomplished and strong after a run.

When I first started running, I didn't have all the gear. I wore a pair of cheap running shoes, black workout pants and a sweatshirt to train for my first half-marathon. But I've collected running clothes, gear and gadgets that I now feel I can't run without. Sometimes having the stuff just makes your runs a little bit easier!

Week of Workouts {March 7-13}

Posted March 14, 2015 in Week of Workouts, workout, fitness and 8 more

Wow, it's been a looooong week. The weather here in Nebraska as been ah-mazing (in the upper 60's, mid-70's all week). I am so ready for spring!

But while it's been beautiful outside, the temperature in my office has been hovering between 81-86 degrees. Ugh!!

I've had my fan blowing directly on me! As you can see, I wasn't thrilled.

It has been really awful, and has made working incredibly challenging. By mid-afternoon I just felt so lethargic and uncomfortable. Feeling hot all day made after-work workouts feel super challenging. My early morning workouts even felt difficult just because the heat sucked my energy.

But it's the weekend, and I can now be in my comfortable home or outside enjoying the wonderful weather.

It's been FOREVER since I shared a week of workouts with you! I've been holding off because for a long time, I was just teaching fitness classes. I've been struggling with fitting in my own workouts with teaching fitness classes (which I've probably mentioned a few dozen times ; )

I'm finally doing some of my own workouts! I admit however, that I don't have a perfect balance. Sometimes I feel like I'm doing way too much. I definitely don't recommend all the two-a-day (or even three-a-day) workouts I've been doing.

I'm worried about overtraining, so I'm working on dialing it down in the classes that I teach. I teach all active classes (meaning I do the workout with my class), but I've been trying to instruct more than do lately. This allows me to have more energy for my own workouts and not overtrain my muscles (hopefully).

It was an incredibly hard decision, but I cut one of my fitness classes from my schedule. I've been struggling to fit in my weekday half-marathon training runs, so I cut my Thursday evening deep water aerobics class to give me time for running.

One of my goals is to incorporate more strength training into my routine (since I do sooooo much cardio), so I've also been working on that.

Here are my workouts from the past week:

I've been making protein pancakes for quite some time, but I feel like I finally perfected my recipe.

Lately, I've been making protein pancakes on Friday's after BodyPump class. It feels like a nice treat after working hard all week, and it's a great way to get in some protein after a workout.

I also like protein pancakes because I can make them in the morning before work. I like to have a filling and nutritious breakfast, but I also need something that won't take forever to make.

Happy Spring!

I'm beyond thrilled that spring is finally here. I love the beginning of a new season, especially spring. Spring, to me, is all about renewal. It's a good time to think about your goals and dreams, and recommit to your plan of action.

In addition to renewing my energy to work toward my goals, I also like to give myself a little renewal. Toward the end of winter, there were days that I wore black top to bottom. It's time to brighten things up! I'm excited to get out my spring and summer clothes, get a bright pedicure and change up my makeup. I'm ready to get out of this winter rut!

Last night after work, I totally wanted to come home put on my comfy clothes and lounge on the couch. But at the last minute, the BF and I decided to go out. As soon as I put on my purple maxi dress, put my hair up and refreshed my makeup, I felt so much better! A good start to getting out of my winter funk.

How do you change things up when spring arrives?

I've been super obsessed with energy balls lately. It all started when I made Pre-Workout Energy Balls. I loved having a healthy, homemade and convenient snack to grab before teaching fitness classes or before going for a run.

Two weekends ago, I made three batches of energy balls. I ended up making Cashew Coconut Balls, Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Bites and Superfood Cookie Dough.

While all of those were delicious and perfect energy before workouts or treats to satisfy my sweet tooth, I decided to make a high protein version that I could have after a workout.

The best methods for recovering from long runs

How-to-recover-from-long-runs.png#asset:

I'm going to be real, training for the Lincoln Half-Marathon this year has been rough. This will be the seventh time I've run Lincoln and my ninth half-marathon. Unfortunately, running doesn't get easier for me.

I've been getting down on myself because my runs have been slow, my hamstrings have been chronically tight and I haven't had a whole lot of energy during my runs. I think back to two years ago, when I felt really awesome running, and I feel like I'm failing.

I know the reason I've been struggling is because of the fitness classes I'm teaching. I'm teaching four cardio classes a week, and I'm struggling to get in my weekday runs and incorporate strength training into my routine.

Spring Fitness Apparel Upgrade

Happy First Day of April!!

I love April because it really starts to feel like spring and my birthday is in exactly one month from today! Woo hoo! I LOVE birthdays.

I've totally had the itch to update my wardrobe since the weather started to warm up. I mentioned it last week, in my How to Update Your Wardrobe for Spring post. I haven't gone through my closet yet, but it's on my spring to do list!

In addition to updating my day-to-day wardrobe for spring, I also like to change things up with my workout wardrobe when the seasons change. Warmer weather means more outdoor workouts and wearing tank tops and shorts! It's time to put away the long leggings and cool weather workout gear!

Purchasing a few new pieces for your workout wardrobe can also keep you motivated or reenergize you to work toward your fitness goals! I've said it before, looking good on the outside makes you feel good on the inside. Even though you'll be covered in sweat, feeling good in what you're wearing to workout is important! When I like my workout clothes and feel good in them, I actually want to workout!

Today I'm sharing some of my spring workout picks.

Happy Saturday!

Last weekend when I shared my Week of Workouts, I mentioned that I was feeling a bit run down. For most of March I was going to BodyPump twice a week, and last week I just kind of hit a wall. My body felt tired and tight.

I reevaluated my workout routine and decided to stop going to BodyPump for the rest of my half-marathon training. I'm going to focus on running and yoga only!!

I also got subs to teach a few of my fitness classes in the weeks leading up to the half-marathon.

I'm really focusing on listening to my body, and my body is telling me to do less. I need to add more short runs in during the week, but I'm going to cut back on the extra workouts like BodyPump. I'll also be using my own tips from my post on recovering from long runs.

Week of Workouts {April 18-24, 2015}

Posted April 25, 2015 in Week of Workouts, fitness, workout and 6 more

The Lincoln Half-Marathon is just eight days away!!

I was able to get three out of four training runs in. Seems to be all I can make work. I even took some time off from teaching fitness classes this week! I only taught two classes. The break was much needed and I didn't feel nearly as sore during my runs this week.

However, Thursday's five-miler wasn't pretty. I felt decent the first half of the run, but the last half of the run was into the wind. Running against the wind takes so much out of me physically and mentally. I wanted to give up, I wanted to quit running altogether and I felt weak. When the run was over, I felt angry, frustrated and annoyed. Usually, I have a pretty decent runner's high going on after a run. It took me awhile to get out of my funk, but I finally realized that not giving up was a huge accomplishment.

Lesson: Celebrate your accomplishments, even if it sucked getting there!

I've been doing lots of Tone It Up workouts this week, and I'm feeling really good! I absolutely love these workouts because I can do them at home, and they are pretty quick. I'm also getting in some strength training, which is a challenge for me.

Here are my workouts from the past week...

Running Mantras To Get You Through Your Next Run

Posted April 30, 2015 in running, half-marathon, half-marathon training and 6 more

Since my next half-marathon is just a few days away, I wanted to share some running mantras that help get me through my runs.

Long distance running requires more mental strength than physical strength. That's actually why I love running half-marathons. In my daily life or in my regular workouts, I don't have to dig down to find that deep inner strength.

Running has been the only thing that has ever pushed me to have to talk myself into continuing when I feel like my body is giving up. You have to use your mental strength to push through physical barriers.

It's a pretty amazing thing.

So what do I tell myself when my hamstrings are burning, my knees are aching and my feet don't feel like they can take another step?

Here are my favorite running mantras...

Happy Birthday To Me!

Posted May 1, 2015 in birthday, memories, accomplishments and 8 more

Today is my 32nd birthday! (That is what I look like today…on my 32nd birthday! ; )

I absolutely love birthdays. I thoroughly enjoy having a day (or a week…or a month) that is all about me. Truth: I've been celebrating a birthday week! I have discovered that so many people don't like their birthdays or don't think birthdays are that big of deal!! I think it's because people rely on others to make the day special. I am a believer in making the day what you want it to be!

I always plan out exactly how I want to celebrate my day. I think about the things that make me truly happy and I think about ways to treat myself, and I make it happen! My birthdays almost always involve taking the day or part of the day off of work, getting a massage, indulging in some delicious sweet treat and spending time with the BF and my family. My favorite things!

My birthday week began on Monday with Ben & Jerry's The Tonight Dough (amazing!). Tuesday was Wild from the Redbox (we never watch movies during weekdays!). Wednesday was a spa night. Thursday I treated myself to a new pair of yoga leggings. These Reebok pineapple capris. And today is my birthday, which will be full of special treats.

Birthdays, to me, are also the perfect time to reflect on the past year. I'm constantly distracted by my to do lists and future plans, that I don't always take time to appreciate what I've accomplished.

(The BF and I camping in Colorado in 2013. One of my fave memories)

One thing that I've realized in the past year is that life is about relationships and experiences. I've spent way too much time wishing I was skinnier or prettier or had certain material items. But my happiest moments aren't times that I felt thin or pretty or when I bought something I wanted. My happiest moments are those spent with the people I care about or experiencing something new or exciting.

One of my goals in my 32nd year is to shop less. I really love shopping, and I often use shopping as a way to treat myself or make myself feel better when I'm feeling down. But things don't improve the quality of my life.

New fave quote: "One of the best things in life is realizing you're perfectly happy without the things you thought you needed most."

I also want to be more present. I'm definitely someone who is always thinking about the future, thinking about my to do list, my schedule and accomplishing my goals. I have a hard time enjoying the present because I feel like I need to be going, going, going.

New mantra - "Stillness is the key to success" - Gabby Bernstein

I can't believe the Lincoln Half-Marathon is already over! I spent 12 weeks training, and in one morning it's done.

As I mentioned in my training recaps (here and here), I suffered from some chronic hamstring pain throughout training. This was due to teaching 4-5 cardio fitness classes a week on top of training for the race. In the two weeks leading up to the race, I only taught 1-2 classes a week in hopes that my hamstrings would recover and my legs would feel fresh for the race.

Unfortunately, my hams were hurting within minutes of beginning the race.

The BF had a little hitch in his run also because he was battling a chest cold the entire week before the race. The morning of the race his coughing sounded pretty rough.

We decided to take the race slow, not worry about our time, and just get through it.

Here are more details about what we ate before, during and after the race, and how we did during the race...

Week of Workouts {May 2-8, 2015}

Posted May 9, 2015 in Week of Workouts, workout, fitness and 6 more

I can't believe it's been almost a week since the BF and I ran our half-marathon! It actually feels like it was forever ago.

I felt pretty sore the day after the race. My hamstrings, glutes, back, the bottoms of my feet and my knees hurt. My mom asked if I wanted to go to a Zumba class with her Monday night. I was excited because she had never been to Zumba before, and I thought it would be a good way to shake out my muscles a bit.

It was a lot of fun! I haven't been to a Zumba class in years. Zumba doesn't feel like a workout, and the time flies.

On Wednesday, I decided to try a strength training workout. It felt super hard, and when I was done I laid on the couch for about an hour. I probably could have used a full day of rest or some foam rolling.

My muscles were feeling better Thursday, so I decided to try a HIIT workout. I felt really sore on Friday, so I decided to take a full day of rest.

I probably didn't recover as well as I could have. I really need to do some foam rolling and yoga. My hamstrings are still sore, the bottoms of my feet still hurt and my knees are still a bit achy.

Here are my workouts from the past week...

Week of Workouts {May 9-15, 2015}

Happy weekend!

The BF and I took a little over a week off of running after the Lincoln Half-Marathon, and now we're back to training! We're running the Yellowstone Half-Marathon in just five weeks!

I'm teaching fewer fitness classes this time around to try to relieve my chronic hamstring pain. I'm also going to listen to my body more!

I admit, I don't always listen to my body when it comes to working out. I push myself hard during workouts and I push through aches and pains to teach fitness classes.

But running the Lincoln Half-Marathon with so much pain in my hamstring made me realize that I need to get it together.

I didn't do all of my training runs this week, but I did listen to my body and do what felt right.

Week of Workouts {May 16-22, 2015}

Posted May 22, 2015 in Week of Workouts, workout, fitness and 6 more

Happy Memorial Day Weekend! I hope you have fun plans!

The BF and I will be in Colorado for Bolder Boulder. Running the 10K is a tradition for us every Memorial Day.

The past week as been weird. I wasn't feeling well Wednesday and Thursday. When I was running on the treadmill Wednesday I had cold sweats, weak muscles and fatigue. I thought I was just having a bad run, so I went to a Pound class. Unfortunately, I still felt pretty crappy during the class.

Side note: I didn't love Pound It was so loud and jarring, and it was hard to keep up while maintaining good form. However, we did do lots of lunges and squats, and I could definitely feel them the next day. Have you ever taken a Pound class? Should I give it another try?

My throat was sore all day Thursday, so I made myself an immunity boosting tonic - orange juice, apple cider vinegar, turmeric, honey and ginger - in hopes that it would rid my body of whatever illness was lurking.

I felt a bit better on Friday, but I had another ailment. My ankle! It was so sore, it hurt to walk. After work, I iced and elevated it.

This morning, the BF and I were supposed to go for a 9 mile run for our half-marathon training, but my foot was still in a lot of pain. After searching my symptoms on WebMD and realizing I could have a stress fracture, I decided to go to the doctor. The verdict...I have plantar fasciitis and tendinitis. My doctor prescribed heat for 30 minutes twice a day, using a cortizone cream and wearing arch support ALL the time. I can't be barefoot, wear flip flops, ballet flats.

I'm actually so grateful that I don't have a stress fracture. My doctor said I can still run and teach fitness classes!!!

Since it was such a weird week, I gave my body a bit of a rest.

Here were my workouts this week...

Bolder Boulder 2015 Recap

The BF and I ran Bolder Boulder on Memorial Day! It was such a fun race!

We've run this race together four times, and I think this was my favorite. We really took our time, enjoyed the people watching, the bands, the activities (Slip n' Slide), and we stopped to take lots of photos.

We had decided to take it slow this year because I have plantar fasciitis and tendinitis (read more about it here). We thought we would end up walking a lot because of my foot injury. But we ended up running slowly, walking at the water stations and stopped for activities and selfies.

Here's a recap of the race...

We're back at the beginning of another week. I wish weekends could last forever.

The weather was finally late spring-like, so the BF and I spent lots of time outside. We went to the farmer's market, we planted our garden and we went trail running/hiking. It was nice to have a weekend without rain!

Here's more on our weekend adventures...

Yellowstone Half-Marathon Recap

Posted June 23, 2015 in half-marathon, Yellowstone, travel and 7 more

The Yellowstone Half-Marathon…where do I begin???

When I signed up for the race in February, I was in the midst of training for May's Lincoln Half-Marathon. I thought registering for a half-marathon a month and a half after Lincoln would keep me motivated to continue running. Sometimes after Lincoln I take an extended break from running and lose my running fitness.

The BF and I were also already planning a trip to Yellowstone. We were planning on leaving June 13, the day of the race. We decided to register for the race, and head to Yellowstone a day early.

However, after the Lincoln Half-Marathon I developed plantar fasciitis and had to put training for Yellowstone on hold. I only did one long run and a handful of shorter runs between Lincoln and Yellowstone. I also never practiced trail running like I had planned.

I was super anxious about Yellowstone because I wasn't in the shape I wanted to be in for a half-marathon and I was worried about my foot. But I was already registered and driving over 800 miles to get to Yellowstone, so I felt like I had to run the race.

The benefits of yoga for children + Community Building Block Party

Posted June 30, 2015 in yoga, family, kids yoga and 10 more

On Sunday, I got to be a part of the Community Building Block Party, which is organized by Buffalo County Community Partners.

It was a cute family event at Harmon Park. Kids went around to different stations, completed activities and got coloring pages after completing the activity. Some of the activities were Kids CrossFit with Kearney CrossFit, backyard hockey with the Tri-City Storm, tug of war with the Kearney Family YMCA and a bike blender with Activate Buffalo County. At the end, the kids could put their coloring pages together to form a book, and they got prizes.

When Buffalo County Community Partners asked me if I would like to have a station, I immediately said yes. Then I realized that I didn't have a great kids activity (Kids CrossFit was going to be there, so a workout was out). So I asked Trudi Flaherty of Just Breathe Yoga to partner with me and lead kids yoga. Luckily, she said yes!
