Week of Workouts, May 3-9

Posted May 10, 2014 in Tone It Up, workouts, yoga and 2 more

After running the Lincoln Half-Marathon on Sunday, I took it easy this week. I did lots of yoga and some toning workouts.

I ended up running on Thursday, and it felt pretty decent. My hamstrings were still a bit tight from the half-marathon, but I did yoga later and felt better.

Here’s what I did this week…

Yoga Inspired Toning + Cardio Workout

Posted May 16, 2014 in yoga, cardio, workout and 5 more

I've been doing the FitFluential Namaste in May Challenge - doing yoga every day this month - and I've also been doing Beach Yoga Girl's May I Handstand Challenge on Instagram. So yoga has been on my mind lately!

I even got into a crow pose for at least 3-4 seconds the other day! This has been one of my yoga goals for awhile. I really think the handstand practice helped me get here!

All my recent yoga practice inspired me to create this yoga inspired workout for a class that I subbed last weekend. The class at my gym is called Chizzel and it's meant to incorporate toning with bursts of cardio.

Week of Workouts {May 10-16}

Posted May 17, 2014 in workouts, fitness, exercise and 5 more

My workout motivation was lacking this week. I think it was the gloomy, cold weather. It's the middle of May, I'm ready for sunny, warm days!

I was also feeling pretty bummed this week. I'm looking for a house or apartment to rent (the BF and I are moving in together!), but I can't find anything! This is such an exciting time, and we're making such a big change, yet it's totally frustrating and disappointing to have so few options.

Having stress like that totally impacts my motivation to workout and eat healthy! Despite my stress level, I had decent workouts this week. I didn't get in any runs, but I did lots of at home workouts and I'm still sticking to my Namaste in May Challenge. I also stuck to the Sweet Success Plank Challenge! Are you still doing your planks?

Week of Workouts {May 17-23}

Posted May 24, 2014 in workouts, fitness, workout and 6 more

Yesterday, I wrote about how I've been in a funk for part of the week and that I didn't feel like working out. But then I typed out my workouts for the week, and realized that I was probably being hard on myself. I did workout every day this week. My workouts may not have been super intense, but I did something every day.

I'm still following the Tone It Up Bikini Series (I attached links to all those workouts), but I've been slacking on my FitFluential Namaste in May yoga workouts. I only got in two yoga workouts this week (my goal was to do yoga every day in May). I did pretty well the first two and a half weeks of the month.

I also missed a day or two on my Sweet Success May Plank Challenge workouts. I feel like I'm doing too many fitness challenges right now! How are you doing with your planks?

Week of Workouts {May 31 - June 6}

Posted June 7, 2014 in workout, fitness, exercise and 6 more

After my workout-filled weekend, I spent the week without a lot of energy. It may have been the weather. It was pretty hot most days this week. That tends to suck my energy until I get used to the summer heat.

But I still managed to get in three toning workouts, a yoga workout and my usual cardio.

I set my alarm every day this week to get up early and go running before it got hot outside. Every single day I hit snooze and didn't get up until I had to get ready for work. I'm going to keep trying! I'm determined to start a morning workout routine!

How do you motivate yourself to get up early?

New Yoga Playlist!

Posted July 7, 2014 in yoga, playlist, music and 4 more

If you've been reading my Week of Workouts posts, then you know that I've been doing yoga a lot this year. I even did the FitFluential Namaste in May Challenge, and tried to do yoga every day!

It was one of my New Year's goals to do more yoga this year. It was one of the best goals I could have made because I truly feel that it has been life-changing!

I take so much of what I learn in yoga into my day-to-day life. When I'm feeling stressed, I'll stop and just breathe deeply and say a few affirmations to myself. I often set intentions for the day or week. I have also been trying to be more positive (I am often a cynic).

Week of Workouts {July 19-25}

Posted July 26, 2014 in fitness, workout, exercise and 8 more

I admit, this week's workouts are kinda lame. I only worked out one time outside of the fitness classes that I taught!

However, I did feel pretty sore the days after I taught Piloxing. I'm still trying to get into a routine at my new house with the BF, while unpacking, while taking my online classes, while teaching five classes a week, etc.

I did increase my steps a couple of days this week though! I hit 15,000 on Tuesday!! (I'll share more on that later).

My goals for next week are to do yoga and get one or two more strength workouts in (I get some strength building with Piloxing).

Here are my workouts for the past week...

Labor Day Weekend Shopping (yoga apparel under $20!)

Posted August 30, 2014 in workout, shopping, yoga and 3 more

Happy Labor Day Weekend!

I don't have any major plans this weekend, so I'm taking some time to relax. One of my fave ways to unwind is to lounge on the couch with my laptop for a little online retail therapy!

As you know, I love buying workout clothes! When I'm not at my full-time job, I live in workout clothing.

Yoga apparel may just be my fave because in addition to being able to do yoga in it, it's so cozy for lounging! The BF always teases me about lounging on the couch in my yoga pants, but they are so comfortable!

Week of Workouts {Aug. 30 - Sept. 5}

I took it easy this week because I thought I would start teaching my next six weeks of Piloxing through Park and Rec Monday, and I'd be going back to teaching five classes a week. But I found out Friday that I didn't have enough registrations and the class was cancelled!

I'm bummed, but I also think everything happens for a reason.

The FitFluential August Fresh Air Challenge ended Sunday. I loved that challenge! I went outside to workout nearly every day in August! (I missed the last two days).

Week of Workouts {Sept. 6-12}

Posted September 13, 2014 in workout, Week of Workouts, yoga and 5 more

I had a great week of workouts this week!

I switched things up a bit. I went to the gym and did the stair climber. That thing is no joke! I was ready to get off the thing after 10 minutes, but I pushed myself to keep going until I hit 20 minutes. I was dripping in sweat!

I also tried out a new fitness studio - K-Town Shakedown. I took a yoga class there, but they also offer Zumba, cycling, toning and other classes.

Remember last week, when I said I was bummed because my Piloxing class through Park and Rec got cancelled, but I believed it happened for a reason. Well, Elaine, the owner of K-Town Shakedown asked if I would like to teach Piloxing classes there! I'm going to teach a preview class Wednesday, Sept. 17 at 5:30 p.m., and then I'll be on the regular October schedule. I'm super excited about this opportunity! And the fitness studio is donation based to make fitness accessible to anyone. I love that concept. Fitness classes are how I got into shape, and I want everyone to have the opportunity to take fitness classes and be fit and feel fabulous!

So trying out a new fitness studio turned into a job opportunity!

Anyway, here are my workouts from the past week.

But I had a pretty crazy busy week. Last weekend, I was in Lincoln with my famI taught Piloxing for the first time at a new fitness studio, I hosted a girls night dinner party (which I'll write about soon!), I was in Lincoln for a whole day for work and the BF and I finally had our housewarming party!

So I actually feel good about my workouts since the week was a bit hectic. My true fail though, is that I didn't take a single workout selfie this week!

My Goals for Fall

When the seasons change, I like to take a little time to set some intentions for the new season. It's the perfect time to reevaluate the goals you've already set or even set some new goals.

At first, I was sad to see summer go. But I realized that fall is full of new opportunities, a chance to wear clothes I haven't seen in ages (cozy sweaters!) and a way to switch up my meals (hello, butternut squash soup, apple crisp and pumpkin everything!).

My week got off to a slow start, but I ended up teaching four classes, attended a yoga workshop and got in a (very) short run.

I subbed the water jogging class at my gym and I was reminded of how great of a workout it is! It's an hour-long class and I definitely felt like I got in a good workout.

I'm going to do a full post on my yoga handstand workshop, but I'll tell you now that it was an awesome experience.

My 1.3 mile run may seem weird, but I actually just had to go somewhere so I ran there. Trying to fit fitness into my routine!

Yoga Handstand Building Blocks Workshop at Avani

Posted September 30, 2014 in yoga, handstands, workout and 4 more

I've been doing yoga regularly since January. After just a few months of practice, and after following some amazing yogis on Instagram, I decided that my "yoga goal" was to get into a handstand.

Coming from being a runner (setting PR's, training for races) and just being the type of person who likes to set goals, I felt like I needed to be working towards something in yoga.

Also seeing all of the super fit yogis (Yoga GirlBeach Yoga GirlLaura SykoraKino MacGregorTara Stiles and others) on Instagram made me feel like I needed to be able to do inversions to be "good" at yoga.

So when Chelsie, a yoga teacher at Avani Yoga Studio in Hastings, contacted me on Facebook and told me about the handstand workshop, I was so thrilled! (Avani is where I used to practice yoga when the BF lived there). I even started practicing a bit at home so I wouldn't look like a total beginner at the workshop.

October Goals

I'm a chronic goal setter. I set daily, weekly, monthly, yearly and even life goals.

I feel like I function better when I'm working towards something. It makes me more productive, and there's nothing better than that feeling of accomplishing a goal!

But lately, I've been making my usual goal lists and then...nothing. The day or week will come and go and my list remains with no checks next to my goals.

Then I read a post about goals written by a blogger I met at FitBloggin. Brooke Not on a Diet creates daily, weekly and monthly goals each month and decides on a reward if she meets her goals. I totally love this idea, and I know it will help motivate me to get going on my goals!

October Goals Review

OK, I seriously need to start doing some more of my own workouts just to make these posts more exciting. Here's yet another week of me teaching a bunch of fitness classes and not doing much else.

I did, however, take a great spooky power yoga class on Halloween morning at K-Town Shakedown (where I teach Piloxing) with the BF. The fitness studio was lit with black lights and glowing neon sticks. I wore a white tank and my blue and white leopard leggings so that I would glow!

Since it was on Halloween, we focused on fear. We worked on dropping back into wheel pose (a back bend) with the assistance of two other people. I get super freaked out about any upside down stuff in yoga (remember the handstand workshop I went to?), but I actually did really well with the wheel.

Novemeber Goals

Last month, I set some goals for the month - something new I'm trying to help me reach my larger overall goals for fall

I got the idea from a blogger I met at FitBloggin. Brooke Not on a Diet creates daily, weekly and monthly goals each month and decides on a reward if she meets her goals. I totally love this idea because I often set lots of goals, get motivated, then lose steam and don't accomplish my goals.

I did OK, last month. See what I accomplished in October here.

I realized that I need to come up with a better reward. My reward was a Fabletics outfit, something that I would buy for myself even if I didn't earn it. So for this month, I came up with something that I normally wouldn't do for myself.

Week of Workouts {Nov. 1-7}

Posted November 8, 2014 in yoga, Piloxing, water aerobics and 5 more

As I've mentioned a few times this week, I spent half the week battling a cold and a major headache/migraine.

I had to get a sub for my Monday night Piloxing class, and I had to cancel my Tuesday morning cycling class at the last minute (like 5 a.m.). I was still feeling pretty rough when I taught my Tuesday evening water aerobics class, but since that class is so low impact I thought I could handle it.

I'm finally feeling better, and I'm excited to get back to my regular classes and my own workouts!

Since it's cold and flu season, and I've already been hit with a massive cold, I want to share some tips on working out while sick.

  • If your symptoms in your head (sore throat, congested sinuses, etc.), you can still workout. Just listen to your body and take it easy. You may feel better temporarily because of the endorphins you get while working out.
  • If your symptoms are below your throat (cough, fever, fatigue, etc.), skip your workouts. Working out with a fever can actually make you sicker because you'll raise your body temperature even more.

Week of Workouts {Nov. 8-14}

Posted November 15, 2014 in Week of Workouts, workouts, yoga and 9 more

I had another week FULL of teaching fitness classes. Between Saturday and Friday, I taught 10 classes!!

I subbed five classes this week at the Wellness Center. I have some financial goals, so I'm picking up classes whenever I can to make extra money : )

My week was pretty crazy. After I taught class every evening, I had phone meetings for my Institute for Integrative Nutrition classes. So I wasn't eating dinner until nearly 8:30 p.m. I just felt like I didn't have any down time. I was feeling pretty overwhelmed by my busy schedule. Then, on Friday, I was reading my emails, and I saw the perfect quote from BexLife...

'"Busy" is an opinion. I'd rather use "full" and "abundant" and "always open to new experiences" to describe my life.'

That's such a great way to think about a busy life in a more positive way!

Friday morning, I did a hip opening yoga sequence and it was much needed! I've been having some hip pain for the past few weeks and, I'm guessing, it's because I've been working out so much! It's time for some self-care!

I also took lots of workout selfies this week!

I had another rough week. My headaches/migraines have returned! I woke up Tuesday and Thursday with massive headaches that turned into migraines by the afternoon.

I've gone months headache free, so I was super bummed that they have come back. Wearing my night guard has really helped. I clench my teeth while I sleep, which causes headaches. Wearing a mouth guard has helped.  I'm really not sure why I'm suddenly feeling pain again.

Usually workouts or caffeine help relieve my headaches, but not this week. Working out made me feel worse, and coffee was no help. I'm going to start keeping a headache journal again to try to find a pattern.

Despite my headaches, I taught a lot of classes - seven this week! I'm still struggling to fit in my own workouts. I decided to take it easy last weekend because I was feeling so sore from teaching so much (and I'm having some hip pain). It did help me go into the week feeling rested and more recovered than usual.

The Best Black Friday Deals

Posted November 26, 2014 in Black Friday, Thanksgiving, shopping and 12 more

Happy Thanksgiving!

I love this holiday because it's a great reminder to slow down and think about things we are grateful for. I have so much to be thankful for this year! The BF and I moved in together, my family is happy and healthy, my blog is better than ever, I'm halfway through my Institute for Integrative Nutrition classes, I feel healthy and happy and so much more!

The BF and I will be in Hastings at his grandma's house enjoying dinner with his family. While I'm not in love with most of the traditional Thanksgiving dishes (green bean casserole, mashed potatoes and gravy, etc.), I absolutely love the BF's family's sweet potato casserole. It's whipped sweet potatoes with a brown sugar nutty topping. Mmmm. That's what I'll be indulging in!

To prepare ourselves for the big food day, the BF and I plan to run the YMCA's Turkey Trot. Note the word "plan". Last year it was absolutely freezing, so we'll see if we get out there to brave the cold again this year.

Need some tips on staying healthy during this holiday?

Check out my 9 Tips To Help You Have a Healthy Thanksgiving, which was featured on Her View From Home.

OK, let's talk about shopping! I've always loved shopping on Black Friday!

Years ago, my mom, aunt, cousins and I would spend the evening of Thanksgiving pouring over the ads looking at all the deals. We would get up at 4 a.m. Friday to start our shopping expedition. We had so much fun laughing at the craziness of the day and getting energized with cups and cups of coffee.

The photo above was taken in 2010 after an epic Black Friday shopping trip with my mom, cousin Kristi and aunt Adel.

I had a great week of working out. I took three yoga classes, and tried two new fitness classes - hot yoga and PiYo!

I have a full blog post about my hot yoga experience coming up next week!

PiYo was great! The class doesn't usually fit into my schedule, but the pool was closed at the CHI Wellness Center and my water aerobics class was cancelled. It was nice to change things up. I liked that it was fast-paced, and all the squats and lunges made me feel like I was getting lots of strength work. I dragged the BF with me, and it wasn't his fave (see photo below), but it makes me happy that he's always willing to try a new class.

This week was Thanksgiving and I got in two workouts! I took a morning yoga class at the CHI Wellness Center and the BF and I went for a run. It was cold (22 degrees with an 8 degree wind chill), so I got really bundled up. I love starting holidays with a good workout!

Week of Workouts {Nov. 29 - Dec. 5}

Posted December 6, 2014 in Week of Workouts, workout, fitness and 7 more

I had another week of headaches and migraines (starting Monday), so my workouts were pretty minimal. I taught my usual classes, and didn't do anything else. My headaches were pretty crazy this week.

I was in so much pain Thursday night that I couldn't sleep, and got up Friday morning feeling exhausted and still in pain. I ended up staying home from work to try to get my headache under control. Being at work makes it so much harder because I look at a computer screen all day under florescent lighting. I spent most of Friday laying in the same place on the couch. I started to feel better in the afternoon so I did some yoga for headaches and a meditation for pain.

I've mentioned this before, but my headaches are hormonal. I had them under control for about 6 months, then they came back a few months ago. I basically have anywhere from a dull headache to a migraine for 5 days straight. It's exhausting physically and emotionally. I have an appointment with my doctor in January!

Also, one of my December goals is to do yoga every day. I didn't include all of my yoga sessions in my recap because most days this week I did a short (10 min.) practice on my own without a video.

Anyway, here are my workouts from the past week...

I can't believe another week in December has gone by! This month is just flying!

This week was all about yoga. One of my goals this month was to do yoga every day. Well, that hasn't exactly happened. But I decided to recommit this week. I signed up for Gaiam's 12 Days of Gratitude. They send you a new yoga video every day until Christmas. I did the videos most days. On the days I didn't do the video, I just did my own quick yoga practice, a DVD or took a class.

I love doing yoga every day because it stretches out my sore muscles and it gives me an opportunity to get centered and step away from my daily stresses. Even if I only get in 10 minutes, I can still feel the benefits!

#TakeTheLeap 30 Days of Yoga Challenge

Posted January 30, 2015 in yoga, SweatPink, prAna and 5 more

I seriously need to get back to my regular yoga practice!

I've been teaching extra fitness classes for the past few weeks, and I've barely been able to get in any other workouts. Which is also why I haven't posted a Week of Workouts post in a long time. It's too boring to read about all the fitness classes I'm teaching.

But I'm not subbing any more classes, I cut one class from my schedule and I will finally have time to do my very own workouts again! The one thing I miss the most is yoga.

So I'm excited that SweatPink and prAna are launching the #TakeTheLeap 30 Days of Yoga Challenge. This is exactly what I need right now.

#BringingYogaBack Challenge

As you know, I've been participating in the #TakeTheLeap 30 Days of Yoga Challenge with SweatPink and praNa (see all my yoga photos on Instagram!)

If you join the #TakeTheLeap Challenge, you can win $500 worth of prAna gear.

This challenge has been so good for me because I wasn't making time for yoga with all the fitness classes I was teaching. But yoga is my favorite way to stretch, strengthen my muscles, get centered, relax and take care of myself. It has felt great to get back to a regular yoga practice.

Did you see my post about the #BringingYogaBack 12-Day Yoga Challenge? It starts today, and you could win $1,000 in prAna gear! Get on it!

My weekend was laid back, relaxing and not super productive. I had a list of to-do's, but only crossed a few things off my list. I'm totally OK with it because I got to spend time with the BF and my fam. Spending time with people I love is so much better than being productive.

#TakeTheLeap 30 Day Yoga Challenge Recap #1

Posted February 17, 2015 in yoga, TakeTheLeap, prAna and 5 more

I'm just a little bit more than halfway through the #TakeTheLeap 30 Day Yoga Challenge organized by SweatPink and prAna!!

I joined the challenge to get back into a regular yoga routine. For awhile, I was teaching up to eight fitness classes a week and yoga wasn't happening. I'm currently teaching five classes a week right now, so I have a little more time to get in my own workouts.

Now that I've done yoga every day for over 15 days, I'm feeling great!

Get motivated to get your Om on!

Posted February 18, 2015 in yoga, shopping, yoga apparel and 1 more

I totally believe that when you look good, you feel better.

The philosophy still applies when you workout! When you're wearing something you like, something that you feel comfortable in and something that makes you feel fierce, you're more likely to get yourself to the gym, out for a run or to a fitness class.

Since I've been doing the #TakeTheLeap 30-Day Yoga Challenge (read my halfway recap here), I thought it would be fun to share some of my recent yoga shopping picks.

As you know, I'm always and forever into printed leggings, so there are a few options below. One thing that seems to be popular going into spring is strappy open back tanks. Very cute! I also included a few items to get you to yoga class while it's still chilly outside.

Happy shopping!

PiYo Class Review

*The Kearney Family YMCA invited me to try out a PiYo class. All opinions are my own.

I recently took a PiYo class at the Kearney Family YMCA. This is a new class at their gym. It launched in January!

This was actually my second PiYo class. I tried PiYo for the first time at KTown Shakedown. But I always need to try a class a few times and by different instructors before I can form an opinion.

Before I get into my thoughts, let's discuss the details of PiYo. It's a low impact workout that combines Pilates and yoga-inspired moves to burn fat and sculpt lean muscles (source). You are in constant motion during the workout, which keeps your heart rate up to help you burn more calories.

Here are my thoughts on PiYo..

Self-Love February Recap

Today is the last day of Self-Love February. I hope you go into March feeling a little more love for yourself!

Creating content based on this theme was really important to me because there are so many women (and men) who spend too much time criticizing themselves, which leads to self-hate, which leads to not treating your body with care.

Each week this month, I challenged you to do something every day that would help you love yourself a little more. If you didn't participate or missed a week, do it in March (or April or May). Finding self-love is a journey and takes work!

Here's a recap of Self-Love February...

Happy Monday! How was your weekend!

My weekend flew by! But the weather was beautiful all weekend, so I spent lots of time outside. Spring is finally coming! By the end of winter, I start to feel unmotivated and uninspired. The cold and dreary days start to get to me. So I am extremely grateful for warmer days!

Did you remember to turn your clock forward? I felt pretty groggy Sunday morning, but I'm feel more energized today. I even got up and went to the 5:30 a.m. BodyPump class!

Week of Workouts {March 7-13}

Posted March 14, 2015 in Week of Workouts, workout, fitness and 8 more

Wow, it's been a looooong week. The weather here in Nebraska as been ah-mazing (in the upper 60's, mid-70's all week). I am so ready for spring!

But while it's been beautiful outside, the temperature in my office has been hovering between 81-86 degrees. Ugh!!

I've had my fan blowing directly on me! As you can see, I wasn't thrilled.

It has been really awful, and has made working incredibly challenging. By mid-afternoon I just felt so lethargic and uncomfortable. Feeling hot all day made after-work workouts feel super challenging. My early morning workouts even felt difficult just because the heat sucked my energy.

But it's the weekend, and I can now be in my comfortable home or outside enjoying the wonderful weather.

It's been FOREVER since I shared a week of workouts with you! I've been holding off because for a long time, I was just teaching fitness classes. I've been struggling with fitting in my own workouts with teaching fitness classes (which I've probably mentioned a few dozen times ; )

I'm finally doing some of my own workouts! I admit however, that I don't have a perfect balance. Sometimes I feel like I'm doing way too much. I definitely don't recommend all the two-a-day (or even three-a-day) workouts I've been doing.

I'm worried about overtraining, so I'm working on dialing it down in the classes that I teach. I teach all active classes (meaning I do the workout with my class), but I've been trying to instruct more than do lately. This allows me to have more energy for my own workouts and not overtrain my muscles (hopefully).

It was an incredibly hard decision, but I cut one of my fitness classes from my schedule. I've been struggling to fit in my weekday half-marathon training runs, so I cut my Thursday evening deep water aerobics class to give me time for running.

One of my goals is to incorporate more strength training into my routine (since I do sooooo much cardio), so I've also been working on that.

Here are my workouts from the past week:

Happy Spring!

I'm beyond thrilled that spring is finally here. I love the beginning of a new season, especially spring. Spring, to me, is all about renewal. It's a good time to think about your goals and dreams, and recommit to your plan of action.

In addition to renewing my energy to work toward my goals, I also like to give myself a little renewal. Toward the end of winter, there were days that I wore black top to bottom. It's time to brighten things up! I'm excited to get out my spring and summer clothes, get a bright pedicure and change up my makeup. I'm ready to get out of this winter rut!

Last night after work, I totally wanted to come home put on my comfy clothes and lounge on the couch. But at the last minute, the BF and I decided to go out. As soon as I put on my purple maxi dress, put my hair up and refreshed my makeup, I felt so much better! A good start to getting out of my winter funk.

How do you change things up when spring arrives?

Healthy Easter baskets for kids, runners and health nuts

Posted April 2, 2015 in Easter, holidays, healthy living and 4 more

I hope you have fun Easter plans with your family and/or friends! The BF and I will be going to his grandma's house for Easter dinner.

I already bought the Easter candy I plan to indulge in! I got a Cadbury Egg and a Russel Stover Wedding Cake Egg. The BF and I will be running 10 miles on Saturday, so I'll have my candy as a little post-run treat. I don't eat candy all that often, but I don't mind indulging during the holidays.

Do you still make Easter baskets? I think it's fun to put together cute little baskets for my niece and for the BF. But all the Easter candy can be too much! (Especially since my niece will more than likely get an Easter basket from the Easter bunny, my parents, her other grandparents and me!). So I came up with a list of healthier options!

Since the BF already bought his own Easter candy, and we're training for a half-marathon, my Easter basket ideas for runners are perfect for him!

I also came up with a list of random gift ideas for your super healthy friends and family members!

Week of Workouts {March 28 - April 3}

Posted April 4, 2015 in Week of Workouts, workout, fitness and 5 more

Happy Saturday!

Last weekend when I shared my Week of Workouts, I mentioned that I was feeling a bit run down. For most of March I was going to BodyPump twice a week, and last week I just kind of hit a wall. My body felt tired and tight.

I reevaluated my workout routine and decided to stop going to BodyPump for the rest of my half-marathon training. I'm going to focus on running and yoga only!!

I also got subs to teach a few of my fitness classes in the weeks leading up to the half-marathon.

I'm really focusing on listening to my body, and my body is telling me to do less. I need to add more short runs in during the week, but I'm going to cut back on the extra workouts like BodyPump. I'll also be using my own tips from my post on recovering from long runs.

Here are my workouts from the past week...

I hope you're enjoying your weekend. I've had a busy, but fun one so far.

I wanted to check in for a moment and share my workouts from the past week. Last week, I mentioned that I was trying to listen to my body more, cut down on fitness classes and focus on running and yoga.

Well, I got in three of my four half-marathon training runs last week! That's an improvement for me. But I slept in every single morning and didn't get in much yoga practice. I must have needed the extra sleep because I slept soundly and long last week.

Week of Workouts {April 11-17, 2015}

Posted April 18, 2015 in Week of Workouts, running, half-marathon training and 9 more

Happy Weekend!

How were your workouts this week?

I got in three of the four of my half-marathon training runs (and two of them were good runs!). And I added in a bit of strength training!

As I mentioned in yesterday's Friday Faves post, I started doing the Tone It Up Bikini Series workouts this week. I've been loving these workouts because I can do them at home and they are pretty quick. I also feel like they're effective - I felt a bit sore the day after I did The Mermaid Workout and the Beach Ball Workout.

I feel like this week was a vast improvement from the past few weeks. The only thing I would like to work on is getting up before work to get my workouts in! I hit snooze every single morning! I also didn't do yoga this week! I slept in and missed Wednesday's 5:30 a.m. class at my gym and didn't do any at-home practice.

So next week, get up early and do yoga!

Here are my workouts from the past week...

Happy Birthday To Me!

Posted May 1, 2015 in birthday, memories, accomplishments and 8 more

Today is my 32nd birthday! (That is what I look like today…on my 32nd birthday! ; )

I absolutely love birthdays. I thoroughly enjoy having a day (or a week…or a month) that is all about me. Truth: I've been celebrating a birthday week! I have discovered that so many people don't like their birthdays or don't think birthdays are that big of deal!! I think it's because people rely on others to make the day special. I am a believer in making the day what you want it to be!

I always plan out exactly how I want to celebrate my day. I think about the things that make me truly happy and I think about ways to treat myself, and I make it happen! My birthdays almost always involve taking the day or part of the day off of work, getting a massage, indulging in some delicious sweet treat and spending time with the BF and my family. My favorite things!

My birthday week began on Monday with Ben & Jerry's The Tonight Dough (amazing!). Tuesday was Wild from the Redbox (we never watch movies during weekdays!). Wednesday was a spa night. Thursday I treated myself to a new pair of yoga leggings. These Reebok pineapple capris. And today is my birthday, which will be full of special treats.

Birthdays, to me, are also the perfect time to reflect on the past year. I'm constantly distracted by my to do lists and future plans, that I don't always take time to appreciate what I've accomplished.

(The BF and I camping in Colorado in 2013. One of my fave memories)

One thing that I've realized in the past year is that life is about relationships and experiences. I've spent way too much time wishing I was skinnier or prettier or had certain material items. But my happiest moments aren't times that I felt thin or pretty or when I bought something I wanted. My happiest moments are those spent with the people I care about or experiencing something new or exciting.

One of my goals in my 32nd year is to shop less. I really love shopping, and I often use shopping as a way to treat myself or make myself feel better when I'm feeling down. But things don't improve the quality of my life.

New fave quote: "One of the best things in life is realizing you're perfectly happy without the things you thought you needed most."

I also want to be more present. I'm definitely someone who is always thinking about the future, thinking about my to do list, my schedule and accomplishing my goals. I have a hard time enjoying the present because I feel like I need to be going, going, going.

Happy Friday! I hope you have fun plans for the weekend!

This week has been super weird.

  • Our landlords are renovating our bathroom, and the contractor built a temporary bathroom in our unfinished basement (where a bathroom used to be). I saw a giant red cricket and a snake in our basement Wednesday night, so I've been totally freaked since. How many days can I go without showering?
  • I'm still nursing my plantar fasciitis. I've been diligently wearing my athletic shoes and arch support inserts. But my outfits have been pretty lame. Dress pants with athletic shoes = not a good look. I know it's just shoes, but I've been feeling pretty frumpy all week.
  • I haven't worked out since Tuesday when I taught a morning cycling class and an evening water aerobics class. My doctor said I could still run and teach fitness classes, but I talked to a physical therapist (an acquaintance, not at an appointment) and she said to take a break from physical activity. I think my body needs the rest, but it feels super weird not to workout.
  • I tried to go to a new-to-me yoga class Thursday night with my friend, Molly, who is visiting from out of town, and no one showed up! The instructor just never showed, and there was nothing on her website about a cancelled class. It is so hard to find yoga classes around here! FYI, Molly and I walked down the street and had a glass of wine instead.

So that was my weird week. And here are some of my favorite things right now...

The benefits of yoga for children + Community Building Block Party

Posted June 30, 2015 in yoga, family, kids yoga and 10 more

On Sunday, I got to be a part of the Community Building Block Party, which is organized by Buffalo County Community Partners.

It was a cute family event at Harmon Park. Kids went around to different stations, completed activities and got coloring pages after completing the activity. Some of the activities were Kids CrossFit with Kearney CrossFit, backyard hockey with the Tri-City Storm, tug of war with the Kearney Family YMCA and a bike blender with Activate Buffalo County. At the end, the kids could put their coloring pages together to form a book, and they got prizes.

When Buffalo County Community Partners asked me if I would like to have a station, I immediately said yes. Then I realized that I didn't have a great kids activity (Kids CrossFit was going to be there, so a workout was out). So I asked Trudi Flaherty of Just Breathe Yoga to partner with me and lead kids yoga. Luckily, she said yes!

Weekend Recap {July 2-6, 2015} - 4th of July Celebrations!

Posted July 6, 2015 in Weekend Recap, weekend, 4th of July and 7 more

I love a three-day holiday weekend! All weekends should be three days (and filled with summer fun ; )

As usual, I had a long to do list and only made my way through part of it. I really tried to focus on having fun and enjoying the weekend without feeling like I should be doing something more productive. I often struggle with enjoying the moment without thinking about the next thing I need to be doing. It's something I'm working on...being present.

I often remind myself that when I look back at my life I don't want to think, "Wow, I was really great at getting my to do lists done." I want to look back at my life and think, "Wow, my life was full of adventure, laughs, love and fun."

Be a better you with quick at-home workouts

Posted July 10, 2015 in Grokker, at-home workouts, fitness and 4 more

This may be a surprise, but I don't particularly like going to the gym. As a fitness instructor, I enjoy going to fitness classes. But working out in the gym is just so so boring.

Fitness classes don't always fit into my schedule, so I love getting in workouts at home. It's just a more convenient way to workout. Lately, I've been using Grokker. It's a website that features thousands of yoga, fitness, meditation and cooking videos.

The great thing about Grokker is it features tons of videos that are about 20 minutes long. You can do quick, but challenging workouts when you only have a short amount of time to workout. This has been perfect for me because my schedule can be kind of crazy. Between working full-time, teaching fitness classes, working with health coaching clients and blogging, I don't have tons of time to workout.

The line up of family members on this trip were: my parents, my brother, my sister-in-law, my niece, my Aunt Adel and Uncle Vic, my cousin Kristi and her husband, Avery, my cousin Jenny and her son, Ethan, my cousin Aaron and his wife, Tricia, and their kids, Cailyn, Dominic and Easton, and my Aunt Cindy and Uncle Mike, and their son, Thomas (and Thomas brought his girlfriend). I'm actually feeling a bit exhausted today, but I got up early anyway for a morning workout. It definitely helped get me going!

What I'm currently wearing to yoga, to lounge and to run errands

I have been absolutely exhausted this week!

I started off the week feeling pretty tired after my Kansas City weekend, and I haven't been able to catch up on sleep. I got up early Monday for bootcamp, Tuesday to teach indoor cycling and Wednesday for bootcamp. My evenings have also been full this week. Last night, I drove to Hastings for a yoga flow class and a meditation class at Avani Day Spa and Yoga Studio. It was amazing! It's a three-week series, so I'll tell you more about it after I've done it for a few weeks.

To get through the day, I'm chugging coffee (from my new coffee mug!) and drinking a smoothie with almond milk, oats, chia seeds, hemp seeds, Perfect Fit Chocolate Protein powder, instant coffee, dates and banana. A tired day calls for chocolate. When I'm tired, I crave sugar and carbs. So I try to satisfy my cravings by eating (or drinking) healthy foods to up my energy.

Today I'm sharing my recent Fabletics {<---- referral link} purchases! I've mentioned about a million times that I'm obsessed with printed workout leggings (You can read about it here and here). I love love love them. I totally believe that when you look good, you feel good. And when you have fun, flattering and comfortable workout clothes, you are more likely to get out there and workout!

Finding-Your-Perfect-Yoga-Class.png#asse

*Soybu was kind enough to send me an outfit to review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

I've been looking for my perfect yoga class for about a year now, and I'm still searching!

Is finding a yoga class really that hard? Well, it shouldn't be. But I do live in a small city in the middle of Nebraska, so my yoga options aren't abundant.

When the BF lived in Hastings, which is about an hour away, I fell in love with Avani Yoga Studio. I drove to Hastings on Fridays after work for Yoga Happy Hour and I often attended their Saturday morning Power Yoga classes. I loved the instructors, I loved the atmosphere and I loved the challenging classes.

A year ago, the BF and I moved in together here in Kearney. I was beyond happy about co-habitating with my man, but I was sad that I wouldn't be in Hastings as often for yoga. So I set out to find a great yoga place in Kearney.

The BF and I had a great weekend mixed with fun, adventures, relaxation and some productivity. We didn't have any plans (besides by work to do list), so we just did what we felt like. Sometimes those are the best weekends!

Weekend Recap {Sept. 18-20, 2015}

Posted September 21, 2015 in weekend, Weekend Recap, healthy eating and 8 more

It's Monday already!

My weekend was very relaxed. The BF and I didn't have any plans, so we relaxed (ie. watched so much Sons of Anarchy!). I did, however, make lots of delicious and healthy food this weekend, and I made it to a power yoga class.

It was a good weekend! Here are some details...

Happy First Day of Fall!!

Posted September 23, 2015 in Fall, goals, gratitude and 4 more

(a photo from the Sweet Success archives! Cabin trip at Platte River State Park in the fall of 2012)

Can you believe that fall has arrived??!? This year has just flown by.

Since it's the first day of fall, I wanted to take a moment to express some gratitude for summer. When spring turns to summer and summer turns to fall, we tend to just keep pushing forward. But it's nice to express a little gratitude for what the season brought to your life.

I also like to set goals for the new season. I like treating each new season just like I do the new year. It's a good time to reevaluate the goals you set earlier in the year and think about what you want your life to look like in the upcoming months.

Today I'm sharing my gratitude list for summer and my goals for fall...

Weekend Recap {Oct. 2-4, 2015} - Oktoberfest

Posted October 5, 2015 in Weekend Recap, weekend, yoga and 9 more

I hope you had a wonderful weekend!

The BF and I got into the fall spirit by picking out pumpkins at the farmer's market, buying some fall decor for our house, drinking fall beers at an Oktoberfest event and drinking lots of coffee.

I actually hoped to spend more time lounging around watching Netflix, especially because it was a rainy, dreary and cold weekend. But I stayed pretty busy all weekend.

Weekend Recap {Oct. 9-11, 2015} - A Crafternoon

Posted October 12, 2015 in Weekend Recap, weekend, yoga and 8 more

Is it seriously Monday already? I hope you get Columbus Day off, and you're spending the day relaxing. I'm back at work today, and not super excited about it.

I indulged in a little too much wine on Saturday during a crafternoon with my girlfriends and didn't sleep at all Saturday night, so Sunday felt pretty rough. I didn't accomplish anything on my to-do list, so I'm feeling unprepared going into the week.

But I had a wonderful time with the girls. Sometimes you just need a little girl time to unwind.

Here are details from my weekend...

Posted November 2, 2015 in weekend, Weekend Recap, yoga and 11 more

Happy Monday!

I had a relaxing and sleep-filled weekend, which was exactly what I needed. Last weekend, I didn't get much rest and I was feeling it all week.

We did make time for fun…the BF and I celebrated Halloween with friends, we enjoyed two date night dinners out, and I got out and enjoyed the beautiful fall weather with my family.

Here are some details from the weekend....

Weekend Recap {Nov. 6-8, 2015}

Posted November 9, 2015 in weekend, Weekend Recap, yoga and 9 more

Happy Monday!

I got so much done this weekend! The BF ended up having to work quite a bit, so I used my time on my own to write, prepare for my upcoming sugar cravings workshop and clean the house.

It wasn't the most exciting weekend, but it was productive.

Getting my Holiday Sweat on

Posted November 9, 2015 in Holiday Sweat, workout, fitness and 8 more

*I'm a Sweat Pink Ambassador. I'm participating in the Holiday Sweat Challenge on my own. This isn't a sponsored post.

Life can get absolutely crazy this time of year. Holiday parties, traveling, Christmas shopping, decorating and spending time with loved ones, while all absolutely wonderful, can cause us to throw in the towel on working out and eating healthy.

My goal during the holidays is always to maintain my weight. I don't want to go into the new year with an extra five or 10 pounds to shed. Ugh!

So I'm actually stepping up my workout game this holiday season (because I'll inevitably be eating a bit more than usual). I joined the Holiday Sweat Challenge with Sweat Pink and Run to the Finish. It's from Nov. 8 (today!) to Jan. 2.

Week of Workouts {Nov. 9-15, 2015}

Posted November 16, 2015 in workout, fitness, healthy living and 8 more

Happy Sunday! I hope you've had a relaxing and rejuvinating weekend.

I'm bringing back my Week of Workouts posts! I'll be sharing my workouts from the past week each Sunday. I took a long break from this series because my workouts were starting to look the same every week. But I'm changing things up as part of the Holiday Sweat Challenge.

My goal for the week was to get in 420 minutes of exercise and do yoga every day. Yoga every day didn't happen, but I'm going to try again this coming week! I was also a bit short on my workout minutes...I got in 315 minutes of exercise. I need to get better at working out on the weekends.

My biggest accomplishment this week was going for a run! I took a long break from running after the Yellowstone Half-Marathon. That race really shattered my self-confidence, and I just haven't felt like running. But I decided to try a 3-miler on the treadmill and see how I felt. I took it slow, and ran without stopping to walk. It actually felt good!

Here are the rest of my workouts this week...

Get a Stronger Core with These 3 Moves

Posted November 16, 2015 in core, fitness, exercise and 8 more

*I'm a Sweat Pink Ambassador. I'm participating in the Holiday Sweat Challenge on my own. This isn't a sponsored post.

When you think about strengthening your core, you're probably thinking about six-pack abs. But having a strong core is about so much more than some muscle lines.

Having a strong core improves your balance and stability, which can be helpful for every day tasks or for running, participating in sports and doing other forms of physical activity. When your core muscles are weak, you could experience back pain, poor posture or injuries (source).

I'm talking about strengthening your core today because it's the theme for the Holiday Sweat Challenge this week. I'm staying active and healthy this holiday season thanks to this challenge, which is sponsored by Sweat Pink and Run to the Finish.

The focus is on the core because a strong core improves your overall fitness and performance. So I'm sharing my three favorite core strengthening moves. And they're all yoga-inspired!

Thanksgivig Recap {2015}

Posted November 27, 2015 in Thanksgiving, food, family and 7 more

I hope your Thanksgiving was full of love, laughter and delicious food!

My Thanksgiving was a bit different this year. The BF and I usually go to his grandma's house for an early afternoon dinner. But the BF has a new job, and had to work.

So we decided to make our own Thanksgiving dinner to enjoy when he got off work. And we invited my parents over.

This is the first time I made Thanksgiving dinner!

Week of Workouts {Nov. 23-29, 2015}

Posted November 30, 2015 in workout, Holiday Sweat, Sweat Pink and 8 more

Happy Monday!

I'm once again late posting my workouts from last week. My goal is to post these on Sundays. But I took a little break from blogging over the long holiday weekend ; )

I'm sharing my workouts because I'm participating in the Holiday Sweat Challenge with Sweat Pink and Run to the Finish. Each week, I'm setting fitness goals for myself so that I stay active and healthy during the holidays.

My goal for last week was to get in 450 minutes of exercise, do Pilates or yoga three times and go running at least once.

I only got in 195 minutes of exercise. I had planned on working out a lot more over Thanksgiving weekend, but I had a headache Thursday, Friday and Saturday, and wasn't feeling up to much movement.

I was finally feeling better on Sunday, so I went for a run at the gym. This is proof that a participating in a challenge like this is motivation! I very rarely go to the gym on the weekends, and I typically don't workout on the weekends unless I'm going to a yoga class or going on a hike. Go me!

Here are my workouts from last week...

All-Natural Headache Remedies

Posted December 3, 2015 in headaches, migraines, natural remedies and 6 more

I've been a bit absent from the blog this week because I've been suffering from a migraine for the past few days.

I stayed home from work all day Tuesday and Wednesday morning because I was sensitive to light and movement. I felt so nauseous it was hard to eat and drink. I spent my time at home trying to read my book club book (The Girl on the Train…so so good!), but mostly just laying on the couch trying not to move.

Today, I have a dull headache and I feel blah and tired.

I first started getting headaches regularly about seven years ago. At the time, they were mostly exercise-induced. After a few years, I finally figured out how to manage those headaches with proper nutrition and hydration.

Now, I get tension headaches pretty easily, but I also get hormonal headaches and migraines. The week of my period it is guaranteed that I'll be in some pain. I've worked with my gynecologist and changed up my birth control method, and I did an elimination diet earlier in the year to see if I had a food sensitivity.

But I'm still getting headaches. Since I haven't figured out how to prevent them, I thought I would share how I get rid of my headaches. I try to use natural remedies to relieve my pain. However, sometimes the pain gets so bad that I break down and take Excedrin.

But here are my go-to natural headache remedies...
